Ranking the site / compared to ranking PAGES

I feel as if many beginners in the SEO world get the two confused. Many people want to rank their sites, but from what I know Google is about ranking PAGES. I didn't really grasp the concept until recently. We should focus on ranking for "each different page" and not just the "site" or only the domain.

I haven't worked on this yet with my sites, but my plan is to do "keyword research" for EVERY SINGLE PAGE (including product pages, categories, etc..) and then creating content based on those keywords for each single page. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but am I right in saying that this is a good way to go?

Google ranks pages, then pages rank the site.
That is why your contents counts alot.

    Most definitely you are right.

You should always build links to your inner pages and not just your homepage -- it looks more natural this way. Also, your inner page might rank number 1 on google for a particular keyword and your home page might rank number 2.

      Thanks.

I'm confused about backlinking each seperate page though. How do you go about doing this? Say I'm doing "profile backlinking" do I put 5 different links of different pages off my one site or ?

I don't do a whole lot of profile backlinking because they are a pain in the a** to index, but I suppose you could do it that way.

I usually write an article based around a keyword, say "kindle fire."

Then, in the article I would link back to the inner page:

    Code:
    <a href="http://mywebsite.com/kindle-fire>Kindle Fire</a>
