Niche Characteristics

When researching a niche what is a good number of searches (in google) that qualifies the keyword as a niche to exploit? I read somewhere that under 500 000 is good. However is this correct? If not what is the ball park figure on the number of searches that qualifies it as a niche worth exploiting.

Thanks

well you cant just go off of searches. You need to know how much competition is out there as well as if its even a market that can be commercialized.

How do I go about finding out how much competition is out there?

I am just getting started in IM, so my opinion probably isn't worth much, but I am using a really neat tool called MicroNicheFinder. You type in a keyword phrase, and it returns a bunch of related keyword phrases with # of searches, # of competing websites for those phrases, relative strength of the competing websites, ad cost, and a value for the commercial intent of people searching each keyword phrase. I don't know how much it costs now, but I think I paid $67 for it a few months ago. Travis Sago (the "king" of Bum Marketing, I guess) just declared it the official Bum Marketing keyword research tool, and he is promoting it now as an affiliate.

MicroNicheFinder's (inventor/programmer/designer/what would you call the guy that designed it and sells it???) James Jones has always answered my emails promptly, too, when I have had a question about it. The tool does a whole lot more than I listed above, you should check it out. Sometimes I wish it had a feature where you could exclude a word from the search results, but other than that it has been great.

Of course, being new to this, I have not used anything else and don't have anything to compare it to.

And no, I am not affiliated in any way with it. I just like it.

          -Keith

One of the easiest ways is to put your longtail keyword inside quotation marks when you search for it on Google.

Thanks for the info. What type of numbers am I looking for in order to qualify it as a niche worth perusing?

I'd say anything below 10,000 pages. I like to go for 5,000 or under myself.

You don't need to pay for any tool.

    1. Go to google and search for the term. There should should be advertisers in SERP located at the right column. More advertisers the better.

    2. There should be at least 3 forums for your target niche.

    3. There should be related magazines to your niche.

One place that can help with this is The largest Message Boards and Forums on the web!

Great place to look for forum statistics, niche forums etc. etc.
