2 days ago I discovered that my website has been suspended. This is because my website was straining the servers too much

I want to improve my website and offer more. My website is a drug related niche which covers harm reduction, addiction, drug facts and news related to drugs.

However my life is pretty hectic at the moment with University, placement as a drug worker and my job. I need to think about how to do it all my have to reduce my post frequency to a post every couple of days.

What do you think I should do?

Did your hosting account specify in what manner your website was straining the servers?

Quite often it's because of plugins used on wordpress blogs for example, or cron jobs.

Without knowing what the problem is, I can't offer advice.

Is it the level of traffic for example?

PS what's with the unhelpful/misleading thread title that doesn't offer any clue as to what type of advice you need? That will just reduce the amount of help you will get.

It was due to plug-ins which I have just found out. They asked me just to remove as many as I can to lower the strain on the servers. Id rather them tell me to do it than just suspend it for a period of time

        Hi blackout17,

You need to do some research on the plugins you have been using and be brutal about removing ANY that aren't absolutely necessary. You'll probably learn a few important lessons from this process too.

Usually, it's autoblogging type plugins that cause issues on shared hosting, trying to make 100s of posts a day by scraping content from across the web.

I use less than ten plugins on a typical blog, and I could cut that down to five if I had to - some of them are very useful but not absolutely essential - none of them are resource hogs.

I (and others like me) cringe when we see these 'list of 100 essential wordpress plugins' and similar, because people don't realise that websites and browsers and computers in general are like our homes - you have to declutter regularly and be brutal about it, otherwise your efficiency goes right down - just like a house full of unnecessary clutter, your website needs to be lean, mean and clean.

It's not just your hosting that's a problem - before it got to that stage, you probably had poor performance and page load speed, which if you do some research, you will find that it can badly affect your rankings and your visitor experience. Personally, I don't wait around for slow sites to load.

        Does that help?

          > The suspension was probably automated. When your account reached xx% of the server load, it removed the source of the load (suspended your site).

          > Like Roger said, it's best to minimize the number of plugins running. Too many people are either seduced by how easy the plugins are to add or intimidated with the thought of tinkering with the themes by copying and pasting simple code.

Take Google Analytics, for example. There are several plugins that will insert the code. But every time a visitor requests a page, there's a server call to retrieve the code. If the site owner had simply copied the snip of code GA provides and pasted it into the footer template, it would be there already - no server call required.

That does help. Thank you. I only had 18 plugins on but I have trimmed it all the way down now to 11. None of them are auto blogging stuff as all my content is my own. Its just annoying they didn't give me a time window to do it without pulling it. I have learnt from my lesson just annoyed of the way it happened but never mind that's life.

With respect, sometimes it's helpful to look at it from the other side - imagine you're a hosting company, what's better -

      a) one customer gets annoyed because their site is pulled because they didn't do things wisely

      b) various other people's sites go down because the other guy didn't do things wisely, but his stays up while they wait for him to respond to them with an email asking 'what should I do then?' or saying, 'hold on while I ask on warrior forum?'

It's like the 'lesson' I provided about thread titles above - tons of people put titles like yours then come back moaning, 'why isn't anyone helping me?'

Answer - because you aren't willing to help yourself.

      Fedup.com...
Surely you can do better than that?

I'm only helping you because you appear to be being honest here -

      New boy wanting to learn!
I hope you prove that to be true.

Thanks for that answer friend. I am planning to set up a blog in the next few days and I guess like most new people I would have jumped in and used loads of plugins without realising the hosting implications.

Plugins that give you stats from the dashboard all also server intensive. 11 plugins is a lot.

To reduce server load and increase loading time of my sites, I don't use more than 6 or 7 and none for stats or autoblogging.

I also don't use gravatars with comments. They increase the load time of the site and are fairly useless since so many comments are just spam.

Keep your plugins to essentials. It's better for the server and for loading time and better loading time is better for your visitors.

Consider getting a VPS (Virtual Private Server). They're not that expensive. $40-$50/month at Hostgator.

That's quite a lot for some people.

Contact your hosting company, since, as mentioned the suspension probably kicked in automatically.

If you can't get increased margin on your bandwidth which you'd probably have to pay extra for, it's probably worth considering a hiring a dedicated server with your current hosting company, or perhaps someone else.

Thank you all for your suggestions and tips. It really has helped me and a number of other people too. I will keep my plug-ins right down to a minimum now after this. I don't want that happening again! With been a rookie with websites and how they work its a big wake up call that your site is suspended for something like this which is basically just negligent on my part.

Thank you warriors I owe you a beer!
