How do you find a profitable niche?

Hi Warriors,

I'm looking to setup a blog for a new niche. I have a niche in mind that I want to target, which I feel is profitable and not nearly as competitive as the IM or home business niche.

All that aside, I thought I would ask you experienced marketers to see if you could give me some pointers on what to look for and how to go about finding a profitable niche.

Obviously the amount of searches are important, as well as the amount of competition. What other factors do you look for?

All suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Alan

you said you have researched the amount of competition already... Have you noticed if it's a "hungry market" or not?

Amount of searches doesn't necesarrily mean "buyers", but lots of competition could very well mean there is money to be made in the niche....

    We need more details

The main keyword I'm targeting (very broad) turns up 13.6 million searches a month.

That same keyword returns 113 million results in Google. Again, very broad and without quotes.

More targeted and specific related keywords are doing well in terms of amount of searches and number of competition.

My question isn't whether it's profitable. What I would like to know is what others look for and do to go about finding a profitable niche, other than just the numbers. Or, is it only about just the numbers?

What other factors, if any, influence your decision to target a specific niche? That's what I'm looking for

Don't be scared of high competition niches.... You want to know why there's high competition? Because there's alot of money to be made.....

The main reason why none of my affiliates sites ever fail is because I ONLY target big niches... The bigger the better.... The more affiliates the better.... If there's no competition I usually won't even consider it. If there's not much competition in a certain niche, there's probably a reason for that... It's possible that you could uncover an untapped gole mine, but it's more likely that it's just a market that isn't hungry enough or they just aren't buyers.

The most fail-safe way to pick a niche, is to pick one that you KNOW is a hungry market... In my opinion health and beauty are very profitable markets with hungry buyers that are willing to spend money. And there are tons and tons of subniches within both of these niches...

      hope this helps...

        Hey mate,

I read about focusing your efforts on creating a "category" the other day.

Sort of like what Ross Jeffries did with NLP.

He took mens hunger for "seduction" and combined that with some basic NLP, and his whole Speed Seduction niche was born.

Can you take your niche and focus it in a new direction?

Add in a technology or approach that hasn't been done yet?

        Hope that's useful for you!

Alan, if you're looking to make sales, I'd say stay away from niches that have so much relevant information available for free all over the internet. People will surely get the information they need at no cost, leaving you with poor sales performance.

However, if you're trying to build a list, do exactly the opposite. Offer free information and people will flock to opt in to your list.

I hope you get what I mean. HTH, good luck!

for the most part, high competition means more money, but I have found niches in the past with NO COMPETITION at all!, and still made a hefty profit! It just takes a bit of research. However, as a GENERAL rule, you should go after the niches that DO have competition....

Great advice everyone. I appreciate it! Are there any other factors I should be looking at besides the amount of competition?

  • Like other people have said, look for a hungry market, which is especially relevant in today's economy. For example, its a lot easier to get someone who desperately wants to lose weight to invest in a $40 weight loss product, compared to someone who has limited funds to purchase a $600 plasma tv. So I'd look at whether or not your market has any desperate buyers.

Having said all of that, how much time will it take you to set up a blog? If it doesn't take too much time, you might as well go for it and see what kind of results you get. Innaction is the best way to guarantee that your niche won't be profitable.

Think of what type of websites bring in the most traffic.. from sites with free games on it to porn and adult websites. also a big point is to consider competition but if the niche has enough people interested in it competition wont matter as much

Basic searches will give you some info. Here are some indicators.

    1. Search the term in Google, it there are a lot of advertisers at the right column of SERP, it's likely a good one.

    2. Search on Clickbank.

    3. Search on amazon.com. Check if there are books, CDs, etc that sells at that niche.

    4. For like software, check download.com, etc.

    5. Check for forums. See if there are at least 3 forums in your niche.

Bottom line, there should be an existing competition. More the better.

Great tips everyone. Thank you so much for your input. I just love this forum and the great value that people provide.

The niche I'm looking to go into has a ginormous hungry market. The competition is many, but my main keyword I'm targeting I shouldn't have any trouble for.

There are loads of forums, affiliate products, etc. as well. Judging by the responses I've received, I think I'll go ahead with my choice.

    Thanks again!

    Alan,

Pay attention to tv commercials. Also, browse the magazine rack at the local Borders or B&N. You could also subscribe to a service like toppaying keywords. It's expensive, but you would have enough ideas to work with for quite a while.

This is how I find niches.

Now will you make a profit or just let this niche slip away?

Some great posts so far, I think the key to success would be to look look for a market that has a high demand and one that is relevant for today's market. Lower priced niches that target peoples needs more directly tend to be more successful that the more expensive isolated ones. Probably the best way to start is by creating a simple blog with heaps of product information and related articles to get some search engine rankings and make a start. Just my 2 cents of info..!

Try looking at magazine racks, book stores , Amazon, ebay pulse. All good places to look for niches and subniches. Also go to clickbank.com and see what others are selling. Amazon and ebay also have menus that will have sub categories within a category. Dating, sex, health and beauty, make money online, gambling are all huge markets.
Look at your own interests and hobbies. Hope this helps.

use google trends and ebay pulse. I like the idea of checking infomercials that run in the middle of the night. Not as much to promote those products, rather to give you an idea of what people are interested in. Believe me, people that buy TV time have done their market research. Why not let them do it for you too?

For gauging the profitability of a niche, check to see how well (and how many) products in that niche are selling on ClickBank and Amazon.

To see if your particular keywords are profitability-oriented (example: people searching for "acne" want info. People searching for "acne cure" want a solution/product), run them through the adLabs Commercial Intent tool: Detecting Online Commercial Intention: Audience Intelligence: adCenter Labs
