Amazon Reviews + Yahoo Pipes + FeedWordpress = Autoblogging

So, the other day I was doing some keyword research fo a niche and came across the title of a book that was well searched and still had the domain available. I said to myself lets build a site for this book.

1. Install Wordpress on the domain, select your favorite theme (prefer the semilogic theme for this kind of stuff).
2. Design a "front page" with information about the book and some pictures.
3. Hop over to Amazon and build an aStore, use an inline frame to add it to your blog.

All pretty straight forward. Now I want to add some great content to this blog on a daily basis so I can get some good Google Juice, I also want something I can submit to feed aggragators, and of course I do not want to do all of the work myself. I could outsource someone to write content, but Amazon has been nice enough to supply me with a ton of free content - customer reviews!

Customer reviews are available through the Amazon Web Service, and this book had over 100 of them. I am not about to copy and paste 100 reviews into Wordpress. Fortunately there is Yahoo Pipes.

4. Hop over to Yahoo Pipes, build a pipe that will grab the reviews from Amazon. A great trick here is to modify the date of the review. I move all of the reviews to a date that is one year later than they were actually submitted, this insures two things; one the reviews on my site will not be the same ones on the first page of the Amazon site for that book, two I know that I will be able to pull in fresh content for the next year on a regular basis.

5. Use the feed from the Yahoo Pipes with FeedWordpress, I like FeedWordpress because it will use the Feed Published date as my published date, so I can get a ton of back dated content, and have future posts queued up.

All in all a pretty simple operation.

Thanks for sharing James, great outline there! It just goes to show you what can be done with the tools that are staring us in the face. Especially Pipes (big fan!), one can get very creative.. with the latest enthusiasm about auto blogging I'm delighted to see a variety of examples. I just purchased a domain name in the PSP niche for a keyword phrase that gets a healthy # of searches a month. I plan on utilizing Pipes to customize an eBay feed but thanks to your post, I'll also be investigating Amazon.

Is FeedWordpress free? Haven't looked into that yet, was first investigating WP-automatic (sp?).

    Thanks,
    Karen

Another trick you can do with Yahoo pipes to get unique content is to use the translation aspect of it to translate your feed into any language and then translate it back to English...

As we all know, these translations aren't perfect, but it results in unique content with a feel that someone with English as a second language has written it.

You may want to experiment a bit with the language you first translate to get the best results but its not a bad way of getting unique content without too much work!

        Hi,

I am a complete beginner to this autoblogging technique. It is something I really want to start.

I have a lot of sites and trying to do a lot of my content manually is becoming too time consuming right now.

Would you be willing to share the title of the book or any other good books or reports that can help me get this off the ground.

        I would appreciate it.

I'll buy it through your link if you have it set up.

        Cheers!

FeedWordpress is free Rad Geek’s Projects FeedWordPress , I used it over WP-o-matic, simply because WP-o-matic will not back date and post date posts based on their rss dates.

I've never used yahoo pipes and now that I can see it the possibilities seem endless. Exactly how did you pull those reviews from amazon though? I guess what I"m asking is, what pipes do you use to achieve that?

There are a couple of pre-made pipes out there for pulling reviews from amazon, just search at yahoo pipes for "amazon reviews". I looked at most of them and although they accomplished some of what I wanted, I ended up coding my from scratch.

I did find some nice amazon and ebay combinations, but is it possible to get affiliate IDs in the feeds as well?

Yes, on the url builder part of the pipe, add a field named AssociateTag and add your associate id to the corresponding box, all links will be encoded with your id.

I would be careful with this approach- just that the content that you are using come from the feeds so its like scraping from another site (amazon) it would depend on how much original content- I would also like the affiliate option and see it going- care to share the URL?.....

What are the terms of service for amazon book reviews? This would work great if they are available under some sort of creative commons license. Otherwise I think Amazon would not be happy about you borrowing and modifying their content... I think you'd be likely to have your account shut down actually...

Amazon actually makes the reviews available to you to use to promote their products.

*Disclaimer, always read the terms for your self, as this is my interpretation and I am not a lawyer.

Are you violating copyright by scraping the reviews or do Amazon's tos retain the copyright to reviews posted on their site and also allow third parties (like you) to use that content on their sites?

If you get that wrong you could have some legal issues.

I am not actually scraping the reviews, they make the reviews available through their webservice, and even give basic tutorials on how to get them.

Whenever I think of taking some rest, why does someone have to come up and share something new which just HAS TO HAVE my attention and time

Seriously though, thanks for sharing, James! This is really interesting. And I hadn't even heard of Yahoo Pipes - this is going to be a good thing to experiment with.

And YES, FeedWordPress is lovely when used for the right purposes

No rest for the weary Sagar

I have also begun playing with Microsoft Popfly, Googles Mashup Generator, and Dapper. They are all pretty cool and have their own pros and cons.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Steve, be sure to check out Dapper.net as well, it can do a few things that Pipes can't like scraping Google search results.

I am thinking of doing some more unique stuff with Pipes/Popfly/Dapper, if any one has any suggestions/ideas/challenges drop me a PM.

I used Dapper a while ago on a project to scrape commodity prices from Bloomberg and turn them into a custom RSS feed.

It was quite unreliable. The feed was frequently down and the Dapper site itself was having many problems.

Have you had any problems James?

I have had some issues with Dapper in the past, but they have seemed pretty solid recently. I try not to do anything "mission critical" with them though. I mainly use them for research purposes or non critical feeds.

Yahoo pipes can be a good source to add to an autoblog. But remember autoblogs must be treated like any other site you wish to have success with.

If you head out of the gates blasting up scraped content on a new domain. Expect to watch that domain get a major bitch slap from Google in a very short time.

Using feeds on a site are a great ADDED feature to have. Not as your main source of content. Blend these feeds with your OWN good content. And you can have a great combo.

    And remember!!!!

Take your time adding ANY feed to a site. Things must be natural. Not forced.

You are probably breaking copyright by using what other people wrote without their permission. Plus, there is the issue of duplicate content and of the low quality of some Amazon reviews.

As I noted above Amazon makes the reviews available for their affiliates to use to promote products on Amazon.

As far as duplicate content, that issue has been debated to death, some believe, some don't.

Quality of reviews is not an issue as they are primarily Google fodder, and the people who read them will appreciate that they were written by "normal" people.
