Weight Loss Niches Slow / Dead This Time Of Year?

Is it just me, or is anyone else who is doing affiliate marketing in the weight loss experiencing a slow period right now?

I can see how many niches may have seasonal spikes and seasonal lulls.

Just wondering: Do Adsense ads also have spikes and lulls in performance as well? (Obviously it costs nothing to the visitor to click on an ad, whereas a visitor may balk at spending money on a weight loss product / program.)

Its really an off peak period. It just happened when a lot of people are trying to re-design their site and products for the Xmas peak.

We're approaching (in the USA, anyway) four holidays pretty much revolving around over-indulging.

Halloween, for many people, is about the treats.

    Thanksgiving, with the traditional feast.

Christmas, with endless parties culminating with another big family feast.

New Years, poster child for over-indulging followed by regrets and resolutions.

Which leads to the corresponding spike in the weight loss markets after the holidays. People have just spent 2-3 months packing it on and now they want to get rid of it before they have to put on the summer clothes and bathing suits.

As for Adsense, I wouldn't hold my breath. No, it doesn't cost people anything to click on an ad, but they do have to be paying attention to want to click the ad.

About the only thing I can see working is if you are promoting something that allows people to stuff their pie holes and not need a weight loss product in January...

      Hi John,

Thanks to the excellent assessment of the situation.

Well... we don't have it any other way here. What is more, add to this our 'dinner on pig-killing days' period in winter. This is an ancient tradition - especially at the rural population. I don't think I have to say that these are excellent reason for eating and drinking.

Therefore, weight loss product is not selling here, in the next six months.

      Best,

      Sandor

I think it the weight loss market will be slow this period as we approach thanksgiving and Christmas. Fortunately though after that, it will be booming again as people set new years resolutions and want to lose weight for 2012.

This is always the case every year and I think it may impact on adsense sites in that niche as well because there will be less persons searching for weight loss relating keywords thus less clicks on adsense ads.

Without having the numbers to back it up, I can understand WHY there would be a lull right now (at least in the US)... the bathing suits have been put away for the rest of the year, and the holidays are right around the corner. It seems like kind of a "waste" to lose weight now, then gorge yourself through the holidays. All you're going to do is put the weight back on!

John, if you can come up with a product like this, you can leave us Warriors behind and spend the rest of your days trolling for more fish like the one in your picture!

Yeh I'm experiencing a HUGE drop in sales at the moment. I sure hope like John and yesacpow mention, that there'll be a boom in the weight loss niche after the Christmas period.

I've never been in this niche but if I was, I'd want to be in it for the next few months, especially post New Year.

Maybe it's the calm before the storm?

Exactly. This time of the year is slow for my fitness site. But just wait until New Years, everything explodes in the fitness niche. From New Years until about August are the hot months for the fitness niche, at least from my experiences.

As a full-time marketer in the Fitness & Weight Loss Niche, here's what I've found:
    • Busiest Months: January, February, May, and November
    • Slowest Months: July, August, and October
    • Average Months: March, April, June, Sept, December

November may come as a surprise, but people in New Zealand and Australia are going for that final push before summer. I've had some of my biggest months in November.

Mid June-Mid August <---by FAR the worst sales period for fitness products in my experience.

September jumps up again...and I have no idea why. My guess is that people in New Zealand and Australia are thinking about their upcoming sunny weather.

    Hope that helps

I've been in this niche since 2002. There's a definite slow down period that will last until the end of December. January is when it goes crazy!

In terms of Adsense, it's not so much the performance, but what advertisers are paying out. January page eCPM is usually much higher than end of year page eCPM.

I was just thinking about joining this niche, and appreciate the information this post provided. I didn't even think about the high's and the low's this niche could have!

      Thanks

Why is there such a negativity towards Adsense?
In some niches, Adsense absolutely kills it. Weight Loss included.
The key is niche selection and being vigilant with the CAF.

To the OP, yes Adsense is very sensitive to seasonal changes. Also from experience using it large scale, the beginning and ending of months/quarters also shows short dips in advertiser spend as campaigns end and new ones begin.

A lot of niches experience peaks and valleys during certain times of the year. Rest assurred, the weight loss niche is gong to blow up after the holidays and into the spring and summer. For now, why not focus on promoting stuff for the holidays as a way to make up for the dip in income? There are tons of products across various niches that you can promote. There are lots of expensive products where you can even cross promote even more expensive stuff, which means big commissions. :-)

    Good luck,
    Joey

Are these results typical to the weight loss market only or the everything fitness related?

The results I listed in my post above are Fitness and Weight Loss.

I suppose just weight loss could be different.

...also, I'm basing this on a tens of millions of visitors over a 4 year period, not just a few little niche sites.

    Hope that helps,

Yes, mine started slowing about two weeks ago.

By the way, Rusty doesn't know anything about the fitness niche - his blog only gets over a million visitors a year...Someday he'll get real traffic

The above was an attempt at sarcastic humor.

Yea it definitely slowed down significantly. Even in the beginning of September it started to slow down, but once it hit October slow.........traffic................

      Just an update.

Sales of fitness products seem to be picking up again for me as well as all of the fitness affiliates I work with.
