Anyone Making Good Money Selling Stuff On Ebay?

My step-dad is unemployed and I think selling stuff on ebay would be a great idea for him to create an income. I would be interested in learning about drop shipping and buying wholesale. We live in New York. Any suggestions/ideas would be welcomed.

    On a small scale, I sometimes buy collectables and hold them for a couple of years and them sell them again on ebay.

      Some things do really appreciate in price over time. Maybe there's software that tells you what people are searching for on ebay. If we know what the market wants, all we gotta do is find it at wholesale price and sell it for a profit.

      • I used to sell full-time on eBay. eBay does not want more sole proprietor sellers. They want the big names in retail.

        I think a new seller would have a very difficult time making a living, but if he has some stuff lying around he'd like to sell anyway, he could give it a try.

          Ebay takes about 12% of the sale price. That's pretty high. I guess he could buy stuff at yard sales if he wanted and hopefully sell it for a profit on ebay. Or find a wholesaler.

        there is eBay pulse to show you what people are searching for, right at the bottom of the screen and you can home into a niche too!
        there is also your advanced search, click advanced search and tick the box that says "completed listings" then you'll get a rundown of what sold for what price, don't be alarmed by all the red unsolds usually its the seller taking things down because if you look at the item it says ...seller ended item, but do take note of real unsolds .
        i know a lot of people having a real hard time on eBay though the Christmas season is upon s and gifts etc. are going to go mental now :-) so good luck mate

    You can always try Amazon. No fee's to list either! Simply find a hot product that is selling in whatever category you want and then try to locate a supplier for wholesale product.

      I agree with BloggingPro, Amazon rocks as a place to sell. Many people think you can just sell books there, but I have sold all kinds of items there including; a motorized car, weights, dvds, electronic keyboard, software and more. No fees unless it sells.

      That said ebay can be very good also. But it is hard to make a full time living there unless you can sell the same thing over and over or very high ticket items. Listing unique items can be very time consuming as is packing and shipping. Still it is can be profitable and I have made thousands from both Ebay and Amazon. You have to learn how to price and ship also to make the best profits.

      Thanks for the idea man. No wonder Amazon is so successful. Sellers only pay if their item sells. Ebay charges listing fees before your item sells.

    You can make a few $s on ebay, there are ways to check out what others are selling and how well they are doing, then copy them !!, there are several ways of doing this.

    I know someone who makes a killing marketing fancy dress clothes but she never touches anything, she just sends the orders to the supplier who dropship the goods.

    Remember with ebay control is out of your hands, you could loose your feedback score for numerous reasons not your fault, bad postage etc etc

    Your step dad could take a look at the knowledge he has, we all hold knowledge that is marketable to groups of people out there as information products.

    Im still on youtube with a little information product i put out once, it generates automated income, people will pay for knowledge, if the price is right they will buy to save themselves time, as long as you market it correctly that is.

    Why don't you sit down with him and brainstorm the things that he is interested in, and then do some market research on those things. If there is a market, a supplier, and a respectable profit margin (variable) then I think you could make something work.

      That's an awesome idea man. People make excuses all the time that there is no work/jobs available. The reality is that people will always have problems whether it's in a recession or in a strong economy. We need to fix people's problems. I guess he can buy a booklet on fixing certain electronics and sell the products for a higher price.

    Don't think of ebay just as a place to sell stuff. It can be a great place to buy stuff that you can resell elsewhere. I have two friends that do this. One of them buys software and resells it back on ebay for a higher price or to a local computer supplier. Another friend buys printer cartridges from ebay and sells them to local businesses.

    I think the easiest way for your step-dad to get started on ebay would be to sell print coupons. This will help him quickly increase his ratings and give him time to think about what else he can sell or buy and resell.

    you can make money on ebay but you have to take the proper steps:

    1. use real dropshippers not middlemen, check realdropshipper.com
    2. use drop ship software to mirror your suppliers inventory in your ebay listings, so you dont end up selling something out of stock, drop ship software should support ebay file exchange.
    3. try to buy in bulk from manufacturers or distributors and stock some items yourself, you can make a lot on hot selling items if you can create a large price mark-up and still be competitive.

  • Looking at what already sells well doesn't tell you if that niche is already overcrowded.

    Believe me, most of the obvious ones, like consumer electronics, are.

    If you can come up with a unique spin and make 100% sure no customer of yours ever goes away angry, then you have a chance of succeeding on eBay.

    As a member of PeSA, I know a number of sellers in the top echelon. Most have left eBay but the ones still there have either cut their listings way back or are struggling.

      right, you just need real dropshippers, there are niches overcrowded with poor prices, because the sellers are using middlemen. also buying in bulk from manufacturers and real suppliers really helps, because you get a much better margin.

      Ebay is a tricky game that's for sure. I know there has to be a way to make good, legitimate money with ebay. I guess it's like internet marketing in general. -We have to think outside the box and be creative.

        Drop shipping on ebay is pretty simple:

        Get an account with a real wholesale drop ship supplier, get the supplier's product file urls, then use automated software that will download those products files and format them and update them with your price markup, then use ebay file exchange to upload/import the file to ebay.

      Then you'll be whinging about unfair competition.

      Price-cutting (aka "the race to the bottom") rarely works out well. There's usually someone with deeper pockets who'll take a temporary loss on each unit he sells if it means he can ultimately capture a large market share.

        it is very easy to undercut all competition, provided your work load is extremely low, and that is where drop ship software comes in, especially if you buy in bulk from manufacturers and distributors, but most dont do enough research to find the right products for this, or are too scared to buy in bulk.

      it could be anything at all, if you buy a big lot of something in high demand so you get very low cost per unit, you can make a lot of cash, not just on ebay, but with your own shopping cart like OpenCart which is open source, you just need the right connections, and the right software to make dropship product management easy. and buying bulk right from the manufacturer would be the ultimate in buying at the lowest possible price.

  • I've noticed that some drop shippers actually charge slightly higher then people who sells on ebay, it's a little bit confusing sometimes, best to get reliable sources.

      they are middlemen, perhaps 70%+ of suppliers who claim to be wholesale aren't, the way to know weather or not your dropship supplier is really wholesale, is if they require you to have a state sales tax authorization certificate, real dropship suppliers don't do business with the general public. fortunately, sales tax authorization certificates are easy to obtain through your state tax department.

      I love seo. Especially if it's a high, in-demand product with lots of searches and little competition when it comes to seo. I would recommend people try to sell products on ebay first. See how many bids and the price of the bids that the product got, then look for a wholesaler that offers a competitive price.

  • I have always wonder if people are successful on EBay. I purchased my wife's engagement ring from a guy who used EBay and his secret to success was amazing customer service. EBay was just an outlet to find customers as opposed to the final place.

    My point is EBay can be a great tool but it has to be supplemented with something special for it to work.

I've got years and years of experience under my belt now, took a long long time to find sources, small niches other can't find, how to manage inventory, logistics, etc. New guys almost don't have a chance. Not trying to deter you, but less than 1% of all eBay Sellers in the world make what is considered a "living." More than often, people with thousands and thousands of transactions don't make a good profit. I encourage you to attend some kind of eBay convention or meeting/gathering. It becomes very apparent very quickly that some of them aren't familiar with having money.

    Here is the big secret to eBay.

    Wide variety, sacrifice individual item profit to provide a larger selection of different items. If 1 pink bouncy ball costs $1.00, or I could buy 100 pink bouncy balls for $0.90 a piece... I would pick the 1 pink bouncy ball, so that I could also sell blue, red, black, orange, green, etc. The chances of selling off a complete inventory of pink bouncy balls within 60 days is not realistic.

    Gaming eBay. Be prepared to lose your account, sell 1000 items a month on one account, but keep an account that sells 20 items a month on the back burner. Know how to run several accounts at once.

    Getting close to the source. I've received hundreds of complaints from "competitors" because my prices are cheaper than what they buy them for. I shouldn't have to tell you that profit is good, but profit=growth. Growth=wider selection of items.

    Use past sales history. eBay Advanced Search has made me 1 happy man. Perceived value items are awesome, items that you think would sell well on eBay, but 80% of your inventory NEEDS to be items that have past sales history in which you can analyze profit before you even invest in inventory. The other 20% of items is where you make the good money, but that 80% of items with past sales history is what will totally carry your business.

    I'd personally stay away from the wholesale lists and drop shipping side of eBay.

    back in 2004 I built my first eBay account and started with the exact same thoughts - wasted a TON of time.

    by June 2005 I built my first import company selling motorbikes on eBay (actually that was my very first 6 figure business)

    but these days our focus is on selling information on CD to customers - with direct mail attached selling HIGHER TICKET products to targeted customers.

    end of day ... eBay is a GREAT place to go where the buys are ... but its TOUGH out there.

    so sell cheap - sell in volume - then give your customers what they want - MORE STUFF FOR SALE

    really hope you guys get an income stream running right away ... ( its possible with eBay )

      Thanks for the advice Alex. You brought up an excellent point. If we could use ebay to generate our first customers for free... Then we can follow up with those customers via email and direct mail and offer them more products and services. Hmm... A whole new world of opportunity just opened :rolleyes:

        Actually, you can't get their email addresses, at least not through the eBay system. And you can't even ask. eBay closed that loophole a couple of years ago.

        Honestly? I'd recommend Amazon, selling books and media. I do it and I love it because I use FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon). I send big boxes of stuff to Amazon warehouses and they take it from there, including customer service, refunds if necessary, etc. Way better than selling on eBay ever was. Amazon insulates you from the crazies.

        trust me dude ... the world is HUGE.

        it's not hard to become a millionaire from eBay if you build a customer list and keep selling them MORE related stuff.

        don't make it hard -and start ASAP and grow into the position

        trust me your customers will tell you what else they want as you build that database

          I don't want to be a downer, and you should certainly give it a shot if you're interested. But I finally gave up on eBay after years of having a horrible time there.

          The marketplace is great. I sold tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. But, in my opinion, eBay itself is a terrible platform upon which to build a business.

          Constant fee hikes, often announced in intelligence-insulting emails which paint them as favorable changes. Competing PPC advertisements next to your paid auctions in the search results. Utterly pointless policy changes that put thousands of people out of business overnight.

          And, worst of all, increasingly ridiculous "performance standards" for sellers. If you were to achieve a 97% positive feedback rating and DSRs (detailed seller ratings) of 4.5 out of five stars in each ratings category, you would be a great seller, right? Wrong, according to eBay. You're a bad seller, never mind the fact that 97% is undeniably stellar or that eBay itself tells buyers a rating of four stars means "very good" when the buyers are rating you.

          How did they arrive at these standards? Well, first they got rid of the actual bad sellers. Then, as if forgetting what they had already done, they looked at the remaining pool of good sellers and decided that the ones who were performing "poorly" compared to the others were bad sellers who needed to be eliminated.

          Kind of like expelling everyone but the "A" students, and then turning around and declaring that the lowest "A" students are failing because they're performing "poorly" compared to the others.

          When I saw an ominous red warning on my account dashboard declaring my excellent performance to be "below standard" and my account to be at risk of penalties, I finally said enough is enough.

          It's worth mentioning here that my income exploded when I left eBay and branched out into other things.

Then, as if they forgot what they had already done, they looked at the remaining pool of good sellers and decided that the ones which were performing "poorly" compared to the others were bad sellers and should be eliminated.

            Kind of like expelling everyone but the "A" students, and then turning around and declaring that the lowest "A" students are failing because they're performing "poorly" compared to the others.

            When I saw an ominous red warning on my account dashboard declaring my excellent performance to be "below standard" and my account to be at risk of penalties, I finally said enough is enough.

            It's worth mentioning here that my income exploded when I left eBay and branched out into other things.

            I am glad to hear that your income has exploded since you left ebay. I guess ebay's policies are there to favor the customers more than the sellers. I like ebay because of it's ease of use, but I don't like the fact that the sellers don't have full control of their business since ebay is a 3rd party site.

    here's my 0.2

    I'd personally stay away from the wholesale lists and drop shipping side of eBay.

    back in 2004 I built my first eBay account and started with the exact same thoughts - wasted a TON of time.

    by June 2005 I built my first import company selling motorbikes on eBay (actually that was my very first 6 figure business)

    but these days our focus is on selling information on CD to customers - with direct mail attached selling HIGHER TICKET products to targeted customers.

    end of day ... eBay is a GREAT place to go where the buys are ... but its TOUGH out there.

    so sell cheap - sell in volume - then give your customers what they want - MORE STUFF FOR SALE

    really hope you guys get an income stream running right away ... ( its possible with eBay )

    hey all - i have sold some good stuff on eBay. the last items i sold were gold related, bits of jewellery etc. you get a better price on there then selling it into a "cash for gold" type of crowd. when you find pieces of old jewellery etc don't just shove them back into the box or drawer, stick them up and see what happens - you'll be surpirsed :-)

    Hi. When I first started online dropshipping was what i started with and to be honest you won't make much money at all. The profits are just too small but Ebay can be a good starting point if you know what you are doing.

    Take a look at John Thornhill's 90 day powerseller challenge. It's an excellent guide to selling on ebay and last time i looked it was only $1. Just Google it.

I will be listing two new (related) product soon and it will be a physical product (on CD). The moment I actually have to burn and send something physically the process becomes a pain, but I hope to price them at $27/$37 so it will be worth the inconvenience.

    I get enough sales to pay for my ebay store and the WSO's/IM products I like to buy online during the month. I consider it my internet marketing education cash stream.

      Thanks for the advice Mat. I was thinking of buying a few WSO's on a certain topic, creating my own ebook and selling it on ebay. I could also put my affiliate links in there to other valuable products. There's so many niches that this could work with it's just insane.

    Yeah Steve some people make a fortune on Ebay and Amazon, craigslist and all those sites. I heard that people have on average $5K-$10K of stuff sitting around there house unused that could be sold.

    I don't do it as a business, but I have sold thousands of dollars of stuff myself, just old things I never use anymore.

    If you want a business, try Matt and Amanda Clarkson - they're known for ebay selling in Australia -I think it's biddingbuzz.com, or just google the name, you'll find them very easily.

    A few years ago i use to make money everyday. What i did was go to forums / sell forums etc where there was a "free" section. I'd offer to that anything and everything.

    When i got it I sold it on eBay. you'd make a few $$ here and there sometimes you'd make over a $100 on something you'd get for free.

      I know Craigslist has a free stuff section. So I guess anyone who wants to make a few hundred bucks on the side every month can check the free stuff section on craigslist, pick it up and sell the stuff on ebay.

      • Freecycle is a mailing list all about free stuff. Participants aren't allowed to charge for things they want to get rid of. I know quite a few people in our local Freecycle group are taking things for resale, which is why I stopped donating to it. (If my castoffs are going to be sold, I'd like my favorite charity to get the funds.)

        You should see the mad scramble on Freecycle when someone advertises they have a brand-new laptop battery to give away.

          I second fluffythewondercat with the FBA recommendation. I've switch most of my inventory in media over to FBA, which as helped drive sales. You can also fulfill your Ebay orders through FBA as well. I think that Jim Cockrum is currently offering an FBA course called The Proven Amazon Course that is supposed to be good.

            The "proven amazon course" is VERY good!

            I've had more positive feedback and success stories from that course than from anything else I've taught in 2011.

    I ran an e-bay business for a little while.

    I would go to garage or yard sales, estate sales, auctions, and even thrift stores to find my merchandise. These items are collectable and I knew they were worth more than I was purchasing them for. Thanks to technology and having the E-bay app right on my phone, I could look up completed auction and see if there was a demand and how much it was going for.
    The problems with E-bay is the you will sit on merchandise for some time. But with patience you can keep re-listing and having a store (which is not that much money). One can have a several items listed each month.
    Also feed back has changed and E-bay no longer offers private sales. Many times someone will have missed the auction and wish to purchase the item but all a seller can do is re-list for everyone for that particular item.
    Plus shipping costs have gone up greatly and e-bay protects the buyers in this cost and not the seller. Be sure to make your ad on the bottom to clearly state any rules you wish to apply. Such as returns and if shipping also includes handling. It is your time to get these items ready to be shipped. But USPS does offer free supplies and of course they pick up from your house.
    All in all, I would do it again but with most business there is a learning curve. So for now I will be taking a break from E-bay.

    what i would reccommend in researching what you can sell with how much profit you can make! you dont want to end up trying to sell a product for more alot more expensive than others!

    Start off by selling unwanted items that are lying around your house. Then, if you enjoy it, spend alot of time researching a niche area, such as antique postcards with pictures of dogs on them. One you've got a product which yo u can sell again and again you won't need to spend time writing seperate listings. Eventually you could get into dropshopping where someone else ships the product for you.

    You can build a good list of buyers quickly with eBay as long as you have more things to sell on the backend. Just download the PayPal account email addresses to market to them in the future

    If you want to get a huge jump start on eBay I'm selling my account. It has 5640 100% positive feedback scores with an account age of 5 years 8 months.

    I'm selling it because I've devoted my time elsewhere providing SEO to local businesses but that's a whole other story.

    But this is only if you're serious about selling on eBay. New accounts and sellers don't have a chance anymore against the big feedback guys.

      Thank you for the offer. But right now I am also working on 2 local SEO projects at the moment. Local SEO is almost competition proof. You are certainly right that new accounts don't stand a chance against the big feedback guys. I started this thread for my step-dad who is currently unemployed. But that is really smart what you did by collecting the paypal email addresses and following up with them via email. What did you offer the email list? Did you send them to your ebay store?

    You have gotten some very good replies here - I have been an Ebay seller for over six years now and the game has changed a lot from when I started!

    The drop-shipping never worked for me - too much competition. UNLESS you can find a local company to sell for. I sell furniture for a local company on Ebay and that works as there isn't as much competition. But what I love the most is going to yard sales, picking up odd stuff and selling it for a profit. It is very addicting.

    Here are a few ideas of things I have picked up and sold. Some I make more money on and some things not so much... some things I have to store in my basement for my own yard sale. hehe

    * box of Harley Davidson bike parts - paid $20 - sold parts individually for over $300
    * 2 Madame Alexander dolls (had to run home and look what they were worth.lol) - $15 for 2 - sold them both for $50
    * here is my FAVORITE as it was a blast to do - I bought a big box of Transformer and Power Rangers for $10 - parted them out and got over $400 on Ebay for it!
    * auto repair manuals - you can often pick them up for a buck and they sell pretty good
    * Name brand clothes if they are in good shape
    * Name brand shoes if they are in good condition
    * TIP: If you can pick it up for a quarter, and think it may be worth some money - give it a shot. It's only a quarter.

      I agree that there are a few sellers who manage to get away with things. Statistically speaking, though, they had already removed the crappy sellers with 65% positive feedback or two out of five DSR ratings long ago. That limited the pool of sellers to those who could maintain very respectable stats.

      To turn around and declare that the lowest rated of the remaining sellers were somehow bad sellers, when they were only on the low end of the scale because eBay had already eliminated everyone lower than them, was simply not right in my book. You might as well eliminate everyone except the top two sellers, and then declare that the second best seller is now a bad seller because his performance is on the low end of the scale.

    When i first started online, i went on ebay without thinking it through and got myself into $30,000 debt

    With the money you need to spend out for stock and the business plan needed (which I didnt do) I wouldn't ever want anyone to get into the position i did a few years ago

    I now make more with a few affiliate sites than i did on ebay

    If i was in the same position, i would offer a service locally and put leaflets through doors. It's not a magic solution but more sustainable than online when you need money quicker

    eBay is continuously raising their fees for sellers, which is the biggest reason why a lot of people are deciding to go elsewhere. It makes it very hard to get a decent profit in most categories.

      I don't know of the exact rate of increase, but you've got to allow for inflation to some degree.

      The biggest problem I find with Ebay now is, the page results are favoured towards those who have sold the most and thus have a better rep. Newer sellers of a similar product seem to have much less exposure.

      I used to run a decent business on Ebay.co.uk but it was drowned out when established Ebay.com (US) sellers started to advertise on .co.uk and exposure suffered massively.

    Ebay is a wonderful place to make money. You can sell a wide variety of things. My best advice is to buy something in bulk. Iphone socks sell well or maybe iPad cases, I havent tried the iPad ones but things like those items sell really well. You can buy 30 sock cases for about £10 and sell them on for £3 each gaining yourself a healthy £90 revenue or a profit of £80 per batch.

    Try it out! Make yourself appear professional and make sure to customize your description part of the ebay listing

      This is my first serious post on warriorforum after all the read, I have found this forum a place to read serious money making methods from and appreciate it.

      Selling on eBay can be very profitable in the long-run if you are selling something that is high quality in nature and is no where linked to being replica or 'B-Grade products'. I personally have many people on my skype list dealing in replicas and 'B-grade products' who eventually make a lot of money but sooner or later they do get banned. You can even run into trouble with the law if you are caught with a huge stock of counterfeit items ( That's what I read somewhere and saw a few clips on YT ).

      On the flip side, I know some people selling genuine products or unbranded products and making decent amount of income which comes from a genuine source so they are not really worried about their account being shutdown one day, which is most likely going to be the case with replicas.

      Personally, I do a lot of manual research before entering into the eBay market with a similar or better product, products sold on eBay are obtained from mainland China, usually the unbranded products for example, wallets, iphone cases, are all bought out from China. They are literally bought for $1 or $2 and marked up to $8 - $20 and sold on eBay. Firstly, you need to be careful about a few things.

      Everyone needs to realise the fact, the Chinese people who you come across on the internet claiming to have a factory in China is likely not to be true, there is significant amount of language barrier between the Chinese sharks and the rest of the world, secondly, they do not deal in PayPal. It's very easy to be scammed online and then you'd lose the energy and spirit, I have personally been scammed over $3,000 when I was a newbie in this field. One of the characteristics of a succesful enterpreuner is the ability to bounce back from any set-backs and to learn from mistakes.

      Also need to realise the fact, no one can reach floor 100 overnight, you have to make your way up slowly and steadily. If you find a niche where you are expected to make more than 30% on ROI its most likely you are dealing in replicas unless the stock comes from OVERSTOCK or LIQUIDISERs. China is famous for replicas but do remember most of the branded items are actually manufactured in China, you just need to find your way into the Chinese genuine market and you are set to go big, you need someone in the Chinese market to do your transactions and communication with the Chinese suppliers, this is kind of hard but who ever has this covered will do well on eBay.

      Dropshipping is the latest trend by most people, I personally think its a bad option for new sellers because you will have no idea what product your customer is going to receive. Years ago when I started on eBay, i went with the dropshipping option, those days Nokia n95 was newly released and some Chinese was offering to dropship them very cheaply for me. I eventually sold 5 or 6 of them on eBay, everything looked very bright......untill one day they received their phones :confused:
      ... I signed in to my eBay and my feedback score went from 10 to 8, I had comments like:
      -I just got a dummy sent.
      -This is a toy
      -Scam, need a refund


      I still remember those days and the shock all that had put me into, I hope others don't fall into the same trap.

      Also avoid selling replica softwares, they will end you up in disaster aswell. If you are going to be dealing with branded products, make sure they are genuine and you can provide some sort of Certificate of Authenticity to eBay for the long-run.


      Also you need to keep into mind the usual 9% eBay fee and some 3% PayPal fee before calculating your profits on each product range, I always use this online calculator, it's very helpful.

      As for drop-shipping, just don't pursue this method at the start. Wholesale buying can be a good option, this doesn't mean you have to spend thousands in obtaining wholesale supplies. There are many good items to be made profit on.
      You can buy small bulks from wholeseller for few hundred or even less and later sell them for a higher price.

      You can also use this online tool to find out the WATCHERS the item you are thinking about selling has.

        I sell items on ebay. Mainly just as a side hobby. I'm into vintage electronics and things so my girlfriend and I go out nearly every weekend and scout local garage sales etc. Over the last few years we've learned many many niches that I never even knew existed. Things you can buy for a buck or two and turn around and sell for hundreds easily. Sounds cliche but if you know what to look for you'd be surprised what people sell for almost nothing (just picked up a Nakamichi Dragon Cassette player for $20 last week).

        I think you should have your step dad start out selling a few things just to get the hang of it. If he has a hobby or something he's interested in and can sell items related to that then it will make it more enjoyable. Once he gets the basics down he can scale up. If he makes some money he will gain confidence and motivation.

        Someday I'm going to write a huge course on what to look for at sales. Of course it wouldn't sell because nobody wants to make $20k or $30k a year flipping stuff from yard sales, they want to make Millions in minutes while not doing any work. : )

    I used to be an ebay powerseller and ebay top rated seller after 4 months of selling on ebay. My advice would be to sell in a niche, and find a good wholesaler. You guys should use a service like "World Wide Brands" to find wholesalers. It'll cost you $300, but what you get in return is outstanding. Plus, Ebay is just so easy to make money with. You guys will learn very quickly what works and what doesn't.
