What are your email open rates?

I have a list of just over 500 who I mail weekly, my open rates have varied between 18 and 95% (which I was very chuffed about!!) but the average is 35%.

As this is my only list I have no comparisons and no idea if this is good or not? I am constantly analysing my subject lines and split testing but as yet, haven't found any golden rules.

Is 35 a good percentage? I am aiming to get my average to 50...

its always a good thing when you make money from each promotion you post

if they are opening and reading = that is also a good thing

if they are un-sub and your list is shrinking thats a bad thing

what you want to do is focus on building a relationship with them and showing them cool stuff they will find interesting and helpful ~

I find more conversions when I post a personal review of a product in that target market I know will work for them an help them.

"I create a very nice and helpful review blog that I direct them to."

    They usually buy

Because they know I stand behind what I promote and I am truly trying to help them.

@massin - I only have a few unsub. but they are usually people who have signed up from a giveaway so don't really know me I always wonder whether to send a review in my newsletter or direct them to a review on the blog. I tend to go with the letter to cut out a step but perhaps I shold try the other way....new ideas, thanks!

@Coby Thanks - keep that 100% in mind, great goal to aim for

@ Hamida. That is really good, I haven't separated my lists, those who have bought from me are still on the same newsletter list as those who have just downloaded the freebies. Perhaps I should alter this to get a better indication.

@ komplex. I use aweber and it shows how many (and who) has opened your emails, how many times, what they have clicked on and more. V useful! Which autoresponder do you use? I think they all have this facillity to some extent....

Be aware, though, that it can monitor open rates only for email sent in HTML format, and not those of plain-text emails. (It can, however, deduce that a plain text email has been opened if a link inside it has been clicked).

          Thank Alexa,
I had no idea about that, I send everything in HTML so just assumed it was the same for plain txt.....as they say assuming makes an ass out of u and me!!

    35% is very good

My rates vary from 3% on adswap (freebie list) up to 50% on my buyer's lists...

I have a membership site that got 100% once but was only about 15 people on the list then :p

How do you guys monitor these? I send like 4,000+ out each month for work, but I have yet to figure this out.

Even more important is your clickthrough rate expressed as a percentage of your list size. I typically get 4-7% ctr on my lists
