Just made my first cold call

I just made my first cold call and I was terrified. I was actually stumbling and shaking when I was speaking.

The owner picked up the phone and after talking to her she told me she did have marketing problems and would like for me to call her back on tuesday after 9:30 am. What does this mean because I know that she could possibly be blowing me off but she admitted that she had marketing problems and gave me a very specific time to call her back.

I did not force anything on her I asked her opinion (where do you think we should go from here?)

Overall I think this will turn into an actual meeting, but I dont think I even gave her my name.

Whats your thoughts?

    Hi Mike,

Sounds like you have 1 foot in the door. If she was blowing you off then she probably would've hung up.

You did the right thing by asking her questions to get her to open up. Now you need to sit down and put together a few questions that you'll be asking - of course slant the questions to the services you're offering - such as do you have a website/facebook page/mobile site etc.

Find out how she currently advertises and what her marketing budget is. Also find out what her expectation are and what she'd like to have done for her. You're trying to validate her as a potential client as well as finding out how you can help.

Finally when you're on the phone, relax, breathe and smile. Even though she can't see the smile you'll be amazed at how it will carry across

    OH and Good Luck!!

Coming from someone who's made thousands of cold calls, being 1 for 1 is huge. You will be dealing with some terribly rude people, keep your head up! The rejection is nothing personal =)

First thing today, right now, buy a copy of Cold Calling Techniques (That Really Work!) by Stephan Schiffman. It is the best $10 you'll ever spend.

Mike, that sounds like legitimate interest to me. You'll probably get an appointment on your next call.

    Awesome Mike,

Make 10 more calls and when you call her back get her talking
about her current situation and what the main problems she is facing.

Once you know her exact problems, demonstrate how you can help
her solve the problems and say

"why don't we have a coffee and I'll show you exactly how you can solve [her exact problems] at least you'll have all the information and you can decide if it is right for your business"

    Let us know what happens!

What would be some good qualifying questions to ask?

        First of all

What is your current marketing budget?

If she is trying to do everything for free, that is the main reason she won't be making sales and there no money for a consultant.

        What marketing are you doing?

If she is using the yellow pages it's very easy to take that money and get her a much better return in IM

Find out what her website is.
Do some research. What is she doing wrong? Make her a video review for her to watch, which shows her all the mistakes and show's that you know what your talking about.

Sounds like a good prospect. The more calls you make, the easier it gets. Take a few deep breaths before you start your next call and try to imagine you are talking a colleague.

The fear of rejection is hard to overcome, but you can do it.

When you believe 100% that you can help her grow her business, it will show. Be sincere and honest. Let us know what happens when you call her back.

    Good luck!

Hey Mike, congrats on the call-back, she's definitely interested

In a former life I did B2B telemarketing, I googled "how to be a good telemarketer" before my first day of work and the info I found helped. Although you're not a telemarketer, people may treat you like one and you soon get over rejection. The first call is the hardest. Remember it's a numbers game - a quick rejection will save you a lot of time!

I just called back and she wanted me to come in, but the problem is that she is a florist and said that she would have to answer the phone during the 30 minute consultation. I asked her more questions as to what she is trying to do and she said she would like more exposure.

Where do you think I should go from here?
