Hiring for Article Generation?

Using elance.com, I posted a job to create a series of articles for my website. I've given two writers an opportunity to write a couple of articles hoping one would write something I could publish on my niche website. If they do well, I would hire them for a long series of articles for my site.

Since the niche is specialized and technical, I looked for writers in N. America who could write in a conversational style. I gave them examples and templates to start. I also gave them a pdf of a book that has much of the info I want included. Of course, I want something slightly different and I don't want the book copied. It was spelled in the spec for my assignment.

The first two examples I received were lacking in the technical knowledge that I want. Some details were just factually inaccurate because these writers simply don't have the background. I'm going to have do some editing that I was hoping to avoid by hiring them.

So my question is this: Is this common experience when hiring independent writers for articles? How technical can I expect them to be in the subject area? How much re-writing should I expect to do?

Did I simply go in a wrong direction for site article generation?

Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.

    Bob,
Try running an ad in "Warriors - Wanting to Hire" and be specific in what you need. Ask for samples of technical articles they've already written. Only buy one or two articles until you see if you like the writer's style and if they have the technical knowledge to write what you need.

    Hi Bob!
I think that a lot of writers think that they can research and write about anything, but it's actually not possible in some topic areas. Some people just won't be good at writing about certain things while others will rock at it. For example, I'm not good at writing about golf or video games, no matter how much I research it.
One suggestion is to look for people who have interest or knowledge in your topic. That should be a stronger pre-requisite than being a North American speaker.
You also don't mention how much you were paying these writers, but that could also be part of the problem. If you're not paying enough, you'll get general articles that don't have the depth you're looking for.
I second the suggestion of posting here in the forum or at constant-content. Another similar site that allows buyers to put in requests is ghostbloggers.net.
You could also PM me with the topic and your price range, as I know a lot of writers looking for work.
    Love,
    Shannon

Thanks for the help and suggestions. Two people offered help if I send a PM. Unfortunately, I brand new at WF and cannot yet sent a private message to other members.

Here's what I would have sent if I could:

      Hi Shannon,

Thanks for your response to my question on WarriorForum. I'm going to take you up on helping me find a writer for my articles.

It's funny that your user title is "Space Master" because the articles I want are about astronomy. I just think that's a funny coincidence.

For my website I want a series of articles that describe what to observe in the 88 constellations. I want 88 articles, each about 600-700 words. I have an outline for the article format, a couple of samples and some useful materials that greatly reduce the research required.

I offered this job for $500. on elance and had two possible takers. I tried both for three articles each but was disappointed with what I received. One was eager and responsive but his writing skill left a little to be desired. Plus the facts in the article included errors. The other seemed good at first but then hasn't make agreed upon deadlines. Dates she promised and I accepted.

Please, let me know where you think I might improve my search results or if you know someone who would be a good fit for this.

      Thanks!

    Bob,

We have the same problem hiring article writers and getting disappointed. When I find a good one, I try to keep them busy so that they do not get overloaded with someone else's work.

There are a lot of good ones in here.

As far as the re-writing, I agree with the other poster that you need to find people who are passionate and understand that field in order to write well about it (so that you don't have to re-write).

    Thanks.

I would also like to add that, when sending details to your writer, include all needed details like:

    writing style
    keywords to be included
    tone
    length
    density

Technical writing is little bit difficult to do for an ordinary article writer (not technical writer)

You can post in freelancer.com and specify that you need a technical writer (not just a writer). By then, only providers who have "technical writing" skills on their profile can bid. Or post here in warrior asking for technical writer. There are some fellow members who are expert in this type of writing.

    regards,

I sympathize with the OP as he has provided background materials to his writers and still hasn't found one that can convey the topic the way he likes. This is often a gray area because writing on any topic is subjective - what you think is great and what the writer thinks is quality may not be the same thing.

As for myself, I do not take on technical writing jobs because I know I don't like doing this style of writing. One way to get closer to your ideal writer would be if you ask for writing samples that are close to what you want. Having a natural interest in the topic helps a lot too. I suspect the second writer is not that interested, and therefore, not motivated to meet deadlines.

Rates for "real" good quality writing for this type of subject can be on the higher end of the scale. So, I agree that anyone looking for the best writing needs to look at it as an investment they make, just like any other investment in their business.

I wish the OP good luck in his search for a writer that can bring the astrology topic to life.

This type of writing is not something that just any writer can do. If my math is correct, you are offering less than 1 cent per word for technical writing. You may find someone who can do a good job for you at that price, but I think you will have to go through quite a few applicants to find them.

I love to challenge myself and write on new and difficult topics, but I'm not sure I could even meet your needs on this one.

My advise would be to post a Warriors Wanted ad and be specific about what you need and see if you get any good applicants here. Keep trying with elance too, and maybe specify that you need technical writers or those with knowledge and experience in astronomy. You may also want to consider paying more. Technical writing usually doesn't come for 1 cent per word.

    Bob,

It sounds to me like the writers you chose did not do much research. Having information that is simply not factual is a problem and it usually comes from writers using article directories only for research. It is better to use trusted news sites and the "expert" sites on the subject matter.

You are doing the right thing by only giving them one article to start. This gives you the chance to test them without a huge investment. It can take time to find someone that can write the way you want in the niche you want, but once you find that person you should not have to do much rewriting or editing, if any.

Sometimes you just have to be willing to spend a little bit more money in order to get what you want.

I started freelancing myself because of frustration on freelancer and odesk. You can get bulk articles cheap, but it's rare that they are going to convey what you want and how you want it conveyed.

As the search engines get better and better at determining quality, you will either need to 1) do it yourself or 2) pay more.

But getting something that you don't have to rework is worth your $$'s!

I completely agree and as a writer I am much more motivated to do a great job when someone pays me what I am worth compared to trying to pay me less than what I advertise. I finally learned to start saying "NO" to work at lower rates.

I have just uploaded some funds into a textbroker account.
I've heard good things about them and the fact that you can hire writers of different quality which differs with price. I'm going to give them some articles to write in the next few weeks to upload to the main article directories and then send around the web using various methods. Had anyone had any experience with them?

        Hi Bob,

Somebody once told me the key to finding good article writers is to hire fast and fire faster. Its a pain finding a good writer, but its well worth the effort.

Also, I've found that its usually not about the money or the experience the person has listed. (probably because people just make that stuff up anyway)

Just keep testing people until you find somebody you like.

        HTH,
