Building the list instead of losing the buyer

I'm going to briefly go over a strategy that I only recently started using. It's one of those things you have to do in IM that requires a little extra effort now for big profits later.

For most digital products, you have buyers download after purchasing.

That's a mistake because you've potentially lost the buyer after one sale.

The better option is to have the buyer directed to a sign in form to receive your product via email. I use aweber but all autoresponder email services provide you with customizable opt-in forms.

When the buyer is directed to the sign in form upon purchasing the product, I then have an autofollow message sent to them with the product link inside.

Now I have a list of buyers for that product.

I've used lists for years, but only for lead, not actual buyers.

Hoping this helps you as I'm sure it will help me quite a bit next time I pitch a product.

that's a good strategy. I've had to give away my email to several vendors after purchase. This way, I get info on updates and new releases.

Definitely! Great idea. You want to get email addresses whenever you can. I would think that most people wouldn't be opposed to it, but some people will say you shouldn't force an opt-in after purchase. I say it's your product so do what you want! I've never thought badly about a company doing that after purchasing a product...especially if it's something that you would want to keep them posted on if there were updates, etc. And of course they can opt-out at any time.

While I agree with the opinion on building list, I don't think it is wise to force prospects to get their purchase..

Why can't you just give them the access, and get a script that "validates and subscribes" them to the list, and they then get to choose whether they want to join the list or not. You can also "sell" on the reason why they should join the customer list in your download page. This is how permission marketing works at its core
Make it an option that your customer can choose- not force it down their throat

While I SUPPORT big time on building list, I don't think so it is legit to "force" customer to subscribe to your AR.
.. And Paypal don't like it either as far as i know..

It is my understanding that paypal frowns upon this sort thing. You are requiring a person to give their email address to get something that they have already paid for. This has been discussed here many times before, and a lot of people advise against it.

It's a simple fix - just include a direct link to download page that says "no thanks I don't want updates" and you aren't forcing the opt-in...

Also, programs like GetDPD, WSO Pro, Simple One Click and DigiResults (along with others) can automate this process to add the buyer instantly to your a/r.

Hey, Chris thanks for the valuable information. For some of us new guys these strategies really help the learning curve. Trail and error are to costly and time consuming. My father always said do it right the first time, much easier said then done in this business.

    Thanks Again.

Thanks for the discussion guys. I am a newbie and the comments on both side of this discussion was really interesting. I will run it by my tutor, however I am assuming she will go with the more conservative route and not make them give their email for something they already paid for.

As I understand it, you typically have give-aways of value to gain their trust and so they WANT to be a part of your list. Then market to them from that list.

Clearly I am brand spanking new to all of this, and you may be referring to something else entirely. So sorry if that is the case.

        Hi Kay,

You can request for their permission to email. Not force it. Thats the difference.

This is like asking a girl out. If she says Ok, you got a date. If you don't, you better scram before her dad comes out with the baseball bat.

I believe you can set up an email parser in Aweber to work with PayPal orders so you collect there email address and name as they are making the purchase

I have permission-based subscriber lists and buyer lists.

Just because a customer buys your product does not
mean that you have permission to e-mail them about
        other content or offers.

Nor should you squeeze them BEFORE they get access to
their download (unless you tell them before payment).

Let's face it - most people's 'update lists' are nothing more
than promo lists pushing the list owners other products and
        affiliate offers.

I prefer to give buyers access to the download link right
after payment and include a pre-populated opt-in form
so they can CHOOSE to join the buyer's list if they want
        to.

That way I get a clean, permission-based buyer list where
only the people who are interested in hearing more about
other content and offers do so.

        I usually offer a bonus to encourage the opt-in. E.g. For a
PDF product sale, they may get an audio or video if they
        join the buyer list.

Treat people well and they'll want to join anyways.

        Dedicated to mutual success,

        Shaun

Very true, this is what I have done with some of my lists in the past.

This is also an excellent way to get them to join your list. Offer them a bonus that goes along with the product you're selling. I've done this as well to. Just put a link to a free bonus offer in the product you are delivering.

  • Go ahead and piss people off who have just paid you by making them jump through one more hoop.

Once you take their money you should already have their email.

I don't think it's right to make someone who has already paid for a product join a list to get their product. You are guaranteed to piss them off. I always get agitated when people make me do this.

Chris, I use Aweber too, and Aweber has a parser that will automatically add buyers to a list. No form needed. The parser even sends a confirmation email if you choose double optin.
