Good luck on finding a cheap domain registrar with no hidden fees and ridiculous upsells, because you won't be able to find one.

Godaddy is running a $5.99 promo right now.

I've heard a few recommendations for namecheap.com. I personally use (in addition to godaddy) name.com and dreamhost.com. With either you can get domains for around 9.99 with whois privacy included (requires coupon for name.com).

If whois privacy is not necessary then it's easy to find coupons for name.com around 8.49 per domain. At least that has been my experience as of late.

I found hostingdude to be cheaper than godaddy. Also If buy hosting service for the new domains, u can get even more discount on the domain name purchases.

GoDaddy are brilliant, I buy all my domains with them. I actually find them the cheapest.

The upsells are only there if you want them...

Add me to list of people that don't understand other people's problems with the GoDaddy upsells.

I use GoDaddy to purchase all of my domains (100+). I just click the "Next" button on the upsell page.

Do you not eat at McDonalds because they ask you if you want an apple pie with your Value Meal? Just say no, or click "Next".

I just Googled GoDaddy Coupon and their $5.99 special was the first result. I don't think you can beat $5.99 now.

Actually, you can get one for $4.95, which is current best price for new .COM at GoDaddy. However, you cannot enter that code manually, you must use some special link with coupon code embedded. Here is just one example of working $4.95 link:

Go to Fat wallet and get a Godaddy discount coupon GoDaddy Promo Codes - GoDaddy Coupons, Coupon Codes, and discount codes

Go to Godaddy, and find the domain that you want - skip all the upsells, and insert the discount code on checkout.

Don't forget that Godaddy will by default set your domain to auto renewal, which means that the renewal price will be charged at the full price.

Go to Craigslist and advertise to entrepreneurs who were going to make an overnight fortune but are ready to get out of the game.

I am sure you can buy BOATLOADS of them for pennies on the dollar.

I really like namecheap. Well priced and good to deal with.
Avoid Domainmonster at all costs....they charged me $150 for a .cm domain that they claimed I ordered - it was hidden in their upsells. They automatically charged my credit card a week after I bought the .com domain and didn't tell me. Refused to give me a refund and even threatened me with legal action if I told anyone.
    Amazing......

From my perspective mistake #1 is to worry about saving on domains.

If you get a .com domain with a lousy company and after 1 year your website worth $$$$$ and they didn't let you renew, do you know how much these few bucks would feel .

Go with a company you can trust

Go daddy is very bad. i have never ever found someone as hopeless as godaddy, they are rediculous. And also not user friendly.

I have a host here in Australia and we flew down to meet with them, for all our purchases and domain and hosting big sites. Now whever I have a problem I can call them up, and even at 2am in teh morning I will get a ... "Yes. Hello sir!"

So you need to set up this with your own host and create a good relationship with them. That will help you win in the end in this game I feel. If they even get to know your first name....basis like we are, then its all smooth sailing from there.
