Social media is like collage. Most of the users are there to party and have fun and then you have some that are there to work and network. You just need to get into a group and become the leader.

This month Twitter has sent 83 people to my main blog.

That's very low in terms of traffic but keep in mind it's free and only takes a minute to write "New blog post, check it out at...". So personally I think it's worth it. You also meet a lot of cool people and it's great for networking. I even met a JV partner through Twitter.

If you decide to use Twitter or other social media just keep in mind people aren't on those sites to read ads. They're there to connect with friends, have conversations, and relax. So interact with your following instead of broadcasting your messages.

IM'ers that don't know how to use twitter hate it

It took me time to get the gist of it, now I know it's great, just be there, learn to follow the right people and to craft follow worthy tweets, don't spam, learn how to send direct messages, to respond mentions, retweet, attract the right followers, it can be harshly viral which is what makes it that great.

Don't overlook nor underestimate it, learn everything you can about it. Learn how to use softwares like tweet deck to control it from one place, social oomph, to automate the process and you you will enjoy it's benefits.

I agree with all of this, however Tweet Attacks PRO does everything that Tweet Deck/SocialOomph combined. lol I've actually had clients who previously purchased TweetAdder and Tweet Deck and other Twitter tools purchase TA Pro, and they all say the same thing - "Why couldn't I have found TA Pro BEFORE I bought this..." haha

But yeah, Twitter is definitely one of the most powerful tools you can use for marketing, but like the other guy said you just need to know what you are doing. It takes time and practice, just like everything else.

You link twitter to your blog.
Then you would also add followers of people with your similar interests.
MAKE twitter interactive by communicating and networking with others.
Write articles relating to your product on blog rather than directly selling on twitter. Attracting people indirectly to twitter.

For many bloggers and internet marketers, twitters is the single most effective and important marketing tool out there. Personally, I agree. Once you have built up a good list of followers, you can generate a lot of traffic to your site or blog. If you are doing it properly, it's totally worth to use, and to put some time and effort in it.

    As an advice:
    1. Follow the right people. It's likely that they will follow back.
    2. Interact with them.
    3. Follow and follow back!
    4. DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT SPAM! You can tweet your new blog post several times, but be careful and don't overdo it. You will loose followers and traffic if you are pushy.

As a last advice, don't do the typical newbie mistake of jumping without straightening your facts! You actually have to know what to do before you start. There are a lot of ebooks and tutorials about internet marketing, even on this forum, but if you do a 10-15 minute google search on the matter you will find every information and tutorials that you need.

To get the most out of Twitter you have to establish yourself as an expert. Be an authority in your niche and interact with your followers (for example by asking for their opinion). This way you make sure your followers actually pay attention to your tweets and check out the links you are posting.
In terms of people paying attention to it, it is more important who is posting the link/tweet than the actual content of the post.

4 way to use TWITTER for Marketing Purpose:

Today I’d like to share 4.

Twitter provides sales people with a way to build up a “fan base.”
Not everyone who is interested in what you do or sell will make a purchase upfront but they may in the future and they’re likely to recommend you to their friends.

Using Twitter is a great way to build a buzz surrounding a new product or service you plan to launch. You can leak small bits of interesting information to the public before the actual release date and your niche target group will have the information they need in advance.

Twitter gives you another tool you can use to build your company’s brand.
If your company already has a formal blog Twitter will give you the tools you need to further extend its reach. You can post links to your blog updates on Twitter as well.

Twitter followers may appreciate special deals or discounts. You can use the fan base you’ve created to offer loyalty discounts not found elsewhere – thus increasing your sales while keeping your fans happy.

These are, of course, only a sampling of the things you can do with Twitter. They key is to ensure you are networking with people who are really interested in what you have to offer – not just people who want to build up their own “friend lists” for their own benefit.
More on how to do that later!

    Happy Tweeting!

    Hi Bobbie,

There are people using social media sites like facebook and twitter to good effect. I think it's down to using the particular site you're on to it's best effect. Social media is just one traffic source though. There are other ways of getting visitors to your site by using blog posts, articles etc.

    Hope that helps.
    Regards,
    Simon

It's been hit on already, but I agree strongly... establishing yourself as an authority in your niche through useful, informational and entertaining tweets combined with genuine interaction with your followers and those you follow, will make for an audience that is willing to listen to you and is much more receptive to an occasional offer.

Go in with Spam guns blazing and you will die.

First, define what group of people really want what you're selling, and then ask, "Is Twitter a good way to reach them?"

If you're selling knitting needles to old ladies then Twitter is a terrible marketing medium.

Also, if you're not sure what you're selling then you need to get this figured out first.

I use Twitter for social projection. Twitter is Everywhere online.

If you post a message to Twitter and you have connected your Twitter account to many other sites, everything you post there appears at many other sites at the same time.

I post my Twitter link at all my Squidoo lenses, my blog, etc. Everybody does the same; everyone online has a Twitter account. This is why Twitter cannot be ignored.

Pay Per Tweet is a really great little piece of software I've seen. Basically the whole concept about it is to pay with a tweet!

So say if you're offering a free eBook, in order for people to get it. They have to opt in (so you can collect their email) but they also have to tweet out a special link that tracks out there tweet.

What this does is send out your eBook link to all of their followers. Obviously you're hoping they have a lot of followers, but at the same time you're also hoping that their followers have something in common with them.

It's kind of hit and miss but if you have a great eBook and you get a lot of retweets then your eBook can go viral and you can also make a lot of money.

Make money with a free eBook?

Yup! All you have to do is include affiliate links within your ebook and that's a really easy way to cash in!

    Another great software is TweetAttack

I think that's what it's called. Anyways it let's you market to what people are specifically tweeting.

So say people are tweeting "I need more money"

Well you target those people, and send them a tweet @ them. With say a link to a make money online article you wrote, which then has an affiliate link to a product you're promoting.

That's very powerful stuff right there!

Anyways hope this helps! Best of luck yo!

    Cheers!

oh and p.s. it's not about how many followers you have, it's about how many active and responsive followers you have!

Twitter is a great marketing strategy. You cannot get too agressive or they will suspend your account. They're not like Facebook that will give you warnings. They suspend your account and you're banned for good. You might have built up an account that has 10000 followers and it's gone in a heart beat. Don't follow more than 400 people a day, 200 is safer.

The best way to do twitter marketing is just follow relevant people and then retweet what they are tweeting and also ask them to retweet your tweets. Secondly try to learn the use of "Hash #" tag. It's very useful for searching on twitter.

Use it to build relationship and than take them to private chat when you see that they are interested in what you offer.

Biggest problem is that most are only throwing in their sales pitches and wonder when people running off. Like Twitter, it is only a marketing tool and not to spam it.

People buy from people they like and trust, not because of the product or service.

Twitter is an excellent platform to work with, although it can get a little diluted once you follow thousands/hundreds or however many you follow. But it's a great way to market and has excellent viral possibilities, stay social though and build up those connections then you can introduce them to your products or whatever you choose to deal in.

Twitter is great because it's free. signup and begin tweets and do a search for people in your market. Follow them and most of them will follow you.

There are apps out there you can use to automate but make sure to interact with your followers. Do not promote with every single tweet. mix it but the majority of your tweets should not focus on selling.

I would advise people not to add users by keyword phrase, doing so get's you all the bots and the spammers. The best tactic I have found is to follow the followers of stars in my niche. This is the most effective method of finding real people to market to. If you are posting affiliate links then you need to be running multiple Twitter accounts to see any reasonable return. You also need to think about how professional your profile looks, how interesting you are and the value you are giving other users.

I use Twitter mainly as a list builder, I send people to my blog where they can download Internet Marketing software that I've developed for free. This works very well and as such I've built a list of responsive subscribers and in effect a "cash on demand" system.

Twitter is more about you then your product or service. You will find that more information you share and the more involved you are in conversations the better you will do.

I recommend giving at least 9 links to good information for every 1 commerical/affilite link. If you are to spammy, no on will follow you or your links. But if you are known for giving quality information and being an expert in your niche, you will get a lot of traffic from the links you do post.

Basically what John Hocking (post before yours) said.
Things like auto-following users that mention a specific term, spammy "thanks for following me - check out my website!" emails to new followers and following back everybody that follows you don't work in the long term.

It's all about sharing interesting content and starting a conversation with other users. Even if you communicate through your service's/product's/website's Twitter account, you have to make the users feel that there is a human behind it who's listening. And, most importantly, people have to feel that you really want to share interesting stuff and get into a conversation with others about stuff you care about, not just want to promote your service/product/website.

Simple and most effective tip for marketing on Twitter:

Provide value to your followers in terms of information you share and in terms of how you help others.

As others have mentioned, marketing on Twitter takes study in how it works and practice in how to use it. Additionally, it will take time to build up a list of loyal followers; it won't happen overnight. However, being that Twitter is free to use and has the viral effects that many Internet marketers advocate in their promotional efforts, I think it's certainly worth studying and using.

If you're going to utilize Twitter, you need to focus on getting a lot of followers and or be in the radar of someone who has a lot of followers. Also @ popular twitters with whatever your promoting for more exposure...

I am now at the stage where I use the site to have conversations with people for enjoyment. I don't see how it promotes my site. Ok, I only have 550 followers, but I find more value in discussing the recent football results than using it for strategic conversations.

I have however managed to find new members of staff using Twitter as the intro, saving me thousands of pounds in recruitment fees - so that is something!

Strange thing is that my site (home-made as it is) does provide me with circa £200k worth of new business per annum without the support of social media - but I know I could do more - I just haven't figured it out...............yet..

I read and accept the guidance above (thank you) but think that I can get better value from using other media for promotion..

Seeing all these Twitterers with 35,469 followers etc.. would make you think that it's a killer channel, but if you want to really manage to get any kind of real traction you have to understand how people work with twitter.

One of the things is for example that you have to tweet in blocks - meaning that if you do one tweet and the person is following 500 people, your tweet will very soon disappear from the timeline and then tweeting the same thing again starts being spammy...

So there are rules that you need to know. Ryan Deiss has a good course on it called Get Social, you should check that out...

If you've got a social media following that likes what you have to say and reacts to your post then you have the potential to send a message viral and bring a flood of traffic to your page.

If you have info to give away on your site then you should take a look at the site in my signature, it's still being finessed but is working pretty well at converting followers into people who spread your message for you.
