Hi there,

I know this is probably a really simple question but can someone please explain to me what "anchor text" is in a link.

Also is it possible to give me an example.

I keep reading that the text I have in a link is really important, especially the anchor text.

Thanks

Anchor text is just text that you link to somewhere else. So, you might take a keyword phrase in a blog and link it back to your Website.

For example, if you are in the weight loss niche and you write "lose weight fast" then you'd want to link that phrase back to your product.

You do this by simply highlighting the text and clicking on the hyperlink button at the top of the blog.

    Hopefully that makes sense...

If I have my own website and want to get links to other relevant websites, how does that work?

Do I want one of my links on their website?

Or do I want one of thier links on my website?

If so where do I put it? Do I embed it into the code of the website or have it displayed on my website?

    Thanks

Ok its fairly simple. If you want traffic to come to your site or your blog the YES you want what are called incoming or backlinks coming to you. But if you want to send traffic to another site maybe one of yours or maybe a site you are marketing then yes you also want to create a link from your site to the other site.

When writing a blog or as an exmaple even a post in this thread you will see all you option buttons right above the text box. The hyperlink button usually has a picture of the planet earth and a chain. You want to highlight the text then click that button and enter your link.

      For example:

Let me google that for you

      Understand?

Anchor text is the text associated with a url - keywords now associated with domain

google uses associated words to urls - to rank the SERPS - so obviously you want as many as possible

    Web 2.0

the term web 2.0 is connected with sites that have user created content.. so sites like squidoo and blogger, you can place content and your anchor text links

You want as many coming in - and limit your own website giving out links..

Ok I understand what Anchor text is now thanks.

However I am still a little unsure about the links.

Are you saying that I want my link (with the correct anchor text) written, posted on as many relevant sources as possible?

So for example if I make a page on squidoo and incorporate a link somewhere in the text that links back to my page, this is a good thing? As if anybody clicks on it they will be directed to my website.

Is this what is known as an incoming link? i.e. I have lots of links on other websites, blogs etc that when clicked on direct people to my website?

If so how do I get my links onto relevant website (doughtless there are a lot of threads about this already)

Thanks for all the help guys, I am really new to IM and I'm sure my questions are very basic. However we must start somewhere!!!

Anchor text links from an seo point of view, imo, are used by google to determine the relevance of a website to the keywords.Although, it's generally considered to be better coming from a website that is related to the keyword used. An example of the code is:

    <a href="your website url (inc http://)"> Keyword </a>

this bit of code would show up as the keyword in text but when clicked on would go to the url (ie, your website)

    Hope this helps
