What kind of 'hook' do you use to make people sign up to your list?

Hey guys, I've been puzzling over a problem for a while now, so I thought I'd pose this question to you warriors in hopes of getting an answer.

I have got an opt-in form on my website, and it basically says, 'sign up for updates and get a useful report free!'

The thing is, though, I'm not sure if it's powerful enough to entice people to sign up, and it definitely shows: I've had no subscribers so far. Granted my traffic is still pretty low at the moment, but I want to get this fixed before I really start leaving a big sack of money on the table.

So, question: What's the best line to insert on top of the opt-in form that will attract more sign-ups?

If it helps, my aim is to provide useful content about a specific problem, including a few generalized solutions, while offering more of that plus product recommendations in the auto-responder.

Thanks in advance!

You need a stronger and more specific call-to-action if
you want more people to subscribe to your list.

And also make your report sound enticing so that qualified
visitors to your site REALLY want it.

You're current line of 'sign up for updates and get a useful
report free!' is just too vague.

What SPECIFICALLY is in the report that a visitor would
    find useful?

Get into the mind of your visitor and make sure that your
report title speaks to their biggest burning problems and
    most wanted desires.

    Dedicated to mutual success,

    Shaun

I offer free webinars on my opt-ins that way when they sign up they're going straight to a webinar recording that lasts little over an hour.

I have been having a decent luck with that despite the low traffic on my site. But the traffic is increasing daily and I expect the options to increase as well.

    Regards,

'Useful Report' sounds pretty vague, and not at all interesting. A better hook, with some sort of specific promise (solve your xyz issues in 30 days or less, etc.), might do the trick, but without knowing exactly what niche you are in, it is impossible to say.

So my first bit of advice would be to really hone the call to action for the list.

Beyond that, you might want to consider the Web design itself. Do some split testing on where the form is located, etc., and see if something makes a difference.

Thanks guys, seems like the call to action isn't that hot after all. I'll look into it!

I offer tons of free webinars and they will keep receiving free trainings on their emails. You need a clear call to action. Telling them what to do and what to expect. Tell them that if they sign up, they would get this and it would help or teach you do this. If you want more signups, you can add a popup to your blog. I've doubled my conversions this way. Check out the link in my signature file if you would like a sample.

Either I have the opt-in as the only thing on the page to do or (as in the case of my blog) it's at the right hand top of the page and I suggest it in every video and blog post.
If I make it the only thing on the page.. it's to access a video or a file that's something other than a report.

it depends what your website is about? what you offer for free? if you offer a 100% solution to your visitors they are more willing to opt in to your list..
