Where to Hire someone for this

Hi,

I am interested in starting a website/business that is very complicated (the website that is). It will need to have a kind of software integrated into it, a membership system, forums, social network, and so much more (that was just to give you an idea).

Anyways, it is not something where you just hire someone for 300 bucks to create the site for you. It is a business where you will probably need a part time webmaster.

Where can you find people for this kind of stuff? Or do you think it would be a better idea to hire someone to set it up and then when I need to make changes I can outsource small jobs?

The site/business is similar to this: lingq (dot) com

Any recomendations on how to get something like this up? Also, what is an acceptable price to pay for something like this. I have my budget, but at the same time I have been tricked before by telling someone my budget for something and paying way too much.

thanks

Augie

You're probably better off hiring a company, rather than an individual, for a job like this. Cognizant is one such company. It's US based but they outsource most of their development work to India so their hourly rates are close to $25 / hour and you may be able to negotiate a good flat rate for your project.

    Hi,

I recommend you to hire by outsourcing sites. including Odesk and elance.

I suggest Odesk, because here job posting is free and you will get more talented hiring with low per hour rate. Here site commission is just 10% of total agreed amount.

you may get contractors at $5-$10 per hour with low commission of site.

In elance rates are high in regards to commission of site.

    Hope this helps you.

    All the Best!

Ok, thanks you both. $25 an hour seems very reasonable. I know about Odesk and Elance, but I don't know if this is exactly what I am looking for because the site would be more than just a one time setup, but maybe I could work something out with the person I hire to get him/her on an hourly rate after the site is up.

On odesk, you can set up team rooms where you have people in your team room who work for you on an hourly rate. Their diary / tracking system allows you to monitor how much time they actually spend on your work.

I would recommend that you seek someone who can set it up on a fixed price contract and state that you would probably then look to use them on an hourly rate contract for ongoing maintenance / webmaster work.

Sounds like Joomla might be the best platform to set up your website on, due to the wide range of functionality that you seem to need (or possibly Drupal). I suggest that you search for a contractor with those skills.

      Good luck

I also recommend oDesk. I also recommend building it in WordPress so you can do updates with lower cost people. Have the original setup, design and plugins done by a pro and then you or a junior staff member or a lower priced freelancer can keep it updated.

Odesk.com or elance.com. Some great people on there you can hire. Just make sure you interview them first and they prove themselves for a project like this you dont want any scrubs.

    Hi Augie,

I personally use Odesk and Elance and find Odesk more comfortable. Since you require maintenance, it will be wise to seek a company that can build the site for you, and make sure they have built similar websites for you.

A company usually has a team of webmasters that can see to your requests instead of just one person, but they are also a little more expensive because of this. They do the management for you too, instead of you having to come back to check on them. In fact many individuals were unable to meet up to my standards and were terminated.

Take note that because it requires maintenance, you should also budget for monthly recurring costs. Some of my friends have complained that they expected the maintenance to come free. That does not happen, the money you paid previously was only for the building of the site.

You are already experienced in buying things and know that some research should be done before the purchase. Ask for quotes from a few companies and then compare and contrast, should be pretty quick. They will also ask questions on specifications of your request, which will help to crystallize what you are asking for.

Hey Augie, before I give you any advice, do you plan on this being a full time venture or parttime? Do you have any partners, and what skills do you plan on bring to the table?

One place that I prefer for mass advancement in the Internet Marketing environment would be a software called SE Nuke X. It does this exact same job that you are asking about in a matter of about 5 min. What you really need to do is to create a template and put together all of your information so that when you get ready to distribute, it automatically creates accounts on all leading social networking. Please look into this, it will definitely show you much success!

I would suggest looking through those websites mentioned above and using Drupal. You should be able to get all that functionality from that open source CMS.

I would expect that at least partial outsourcing with a standard place like Odesk would be in store, due to the variety of tasks required.
