where does your best brainstorming happen?

Just a curious thought really! With a full time job in the fire service, a small offline fire consultancy business, 2 kids and my online business! getting a chance to brainstorm new ways of improving my online endeavours is limited! However I find locking myself in the bathroom away from the kids and running a nice deep bath and soaking for an hour or so! Seems to be my best brainstorming sessions! For some reason if I sit in a quiet room with a note pad my mind drifts away on all sorts of thought patterns which are nothing to do with IM!

So my question to you is where do you do your best brainstorming? Any good advice on methods which are productive?

Thanks in advance

I set an alarm on my phone for 10 minutes and just sit quietly. I personal ask God to talk to me but you can do what works for you. It works for me. I do this everyday.

Usually when I have to run an errand -- I get this great idea which I want to work on NOW, but can't. For the most part, ideas and inspiration come to me when I visit a bookstore.

In all honesty, and I don't recommend this: strip-clubs. Seriously, since I am ADHD boy, alcohol used to slow my mind down and assist me in thinking. Did a multi-million dollar deal on my phone once... came up with the idea, emailed the guy, sold it...

Hahaha, that's great. "Hey honey, I'm just off to Spearmint Rhinos! Need to do some serious brainstorming for my new product idea!"

I find I get my best ideas when I'm out walking, at the gym, or driving. Something about mindless physical activity leaves my brain free to mull through new ideas. I also find listening to classical or instrumental music better than my usual choice of heavy metal. When I'm listening to metal I tend to be rockin' out and singing along instead :p

The shower is a great place for me too. Also while driving my car.

Even if I work 50-60 hours every week for my main business and I have a kid... Im almost always bainstorming to some extent for some reason.. I just can't get away from this IM stuff for a long period. I've always been looking for opportunities since I was a kid and since i've found about IM, there are soooo many possibilities that I feel I'm caught in an infinit loop...

When you come to think of it, I'm a victim.

I get inspiration for campaigns all over the place, you never know when a conversation with a friend or an ad in a supermarket will spur my brain into action.

I know it sounds cliche but I always carry a notepad on me. I can't remember how many potential 4 figure ideas have slipped out of my head.

Interesting question My most profitable brainstorming to date has occurred in two places. 1) On "the throne" and 2) In bed at night when I am completely relaxed and my mind wanders freely like a leaf in the wind. My most creative brainstorming occurs at the PC when I am experiencing flow, ie. in the zone and just cranking out content and not thinking about the process.

Ya, some of my better ideas come when I'm not thinking about it. It's just the way the subconscious mind works. It's still working in the background, and sometimes you get aha moments when you aren't actively thinking about it but working on something else. So be sure to capture them when they come up!

I find driving is a great way to get into the 'zone' where ideas developed and problems get solved. I don't drive as much now though.

I've also had luck with getting into that flow state when working out, and oddly enough, watching light television, like a sitcom or something. Occasionally, someone on TV will do or say something that will trigger a great idea. I think it's the getting away from yourself aspect that seems to work.

Have a mp3 recorder with you in the car if you have a long drive. The thought you have at the moment is usually lost if you record it in some way. A not pad maybe. The kind you put on the dashboard. it's hard to write when you're driving , so an investment in an mp3 recorder is the way to go. Listen to motivational tapes when driving. Them record how is it you can apply what this man or woman has said to your life. Keep a journal.
We think thousands of thoughts per day and all are lost unless we find a way to store them somewhere.

Just a few thoughts of mine.

I get a lot of great ideas while watching tv. Anytime I see someone on tv, be it the news, sitcom, documentary, anything really; saying the words "I need, I want, I can't, please help" those are all words of someone who has a void.

Then I think to myself okay..how can I put a product or service in front of that person that would fill that void?

basically helping other people helps yourself out. It gives you a sense of gratitude, and the pay isn't bad either if you do it on a mass scale

I also find inspiration going to the bookstores (Barnes and Noble, Borders, the library) and just looking at the magazines. Or just walking into a random direction in the store and just seeing where it takes me. I find a ton of niches that way.

Another way to find inspiration is to just mind map out on a piece of paper.

Write down say 3 things you enjoy doing, 3 things your parents enjoy doing, 3 things you would want in your life, 3 things you hate, 3 things you saw on tv lately, etc. Then just build off of those in a huge mind map and just go micro within each though.

Another way (haha I have a lot of ways) is to go on Amazon and just look at eBooks. Randomly select a category, then go into an eBook using the "look inside!" feature and just see what the table of contents say. You can find a bunch of huge ideas this way.

Also go into the iPhone app store and see what the "hot" apps are. Then sit back and think to yourself why are they the top apps?

I've got a lot of ways, maybe you can take one and run with it and have huge success!

    cheers!

Another check mark in the Shower column. The odd thing is, that I'm living in an apartment with Horrible water pressure, and I don't like to stay in very long. I can just imagine the idea overload that would/will occur if I had a better shower to think in lol

So... Do I smell a "Brainstorming in the Bathroom" wso coming? No Puns intended...

My best brainstorming happens when I am just about to fall a sleep.

I would love to have a better timing, since it keeps me awake or I simply forget about it the next day.

I even have a little notebook next to my bed now a days.

Definitely when I'm out walking from A to B. If I have the option to drive, take public transport, or walk, I'll almost always choose to walk just because it helps me recap on recent events and plan future events efficiently. I think any new technology capable of logging individual spontaneous ideas in perfect accuracy at the exact moment they occur will no doubt become the next Microsoft.

I'll be honest, brainstorming comes to me when I least expect it. I don't sit down and think about it, I'll be driving, sat on the train, eating dinner or whatever and I'll spot something and then I'll think, that's a good niche site or a good service or a good idea to build a list or whatever.

Louie6925 - Brad here. I get the most of my ideas while running. The exercise clears my mind and my head. It takes a lot of effort to concentrate on my pace.

Somehow, running allows me to "let go" of everything and periodically ideas do begin to flow. More than a few times I have hit upon something I forgot or should have done. Before I finish I have a plan laid out.

I also use the Rosary to help me concentrate on getting through the run - as well as my life. Most of the runs end with a brief break and quiet that is also something I miss when I don't get to it regularly.

I rely on a routine to ensure that I have a "rhythm" in my overall schedule. Breaking at 11:15 really helps me focus on the rest of the day and makes me a lot more productive.

Seems the best for me. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Cheers!

    Brad

Mine comes when I am working on something TOTALLY opposite of where the issue is.

For example, when I want to solve a business issue, if I step back and go do something creative (like music), the answers seem to come.

  • For me, it happens when I least expect it.

A very wise man and successful man advised me today that I should continue working on the basics of business every day. That will lay the foundation for a working business. The brilliant ideas will come when the brilliant ideas come but if I do not do the first part, then I will not be in position to implement the brilliant ideas when they come.

Riding my motorbike, OR driving my car WITHOUT the radio on!

It gives me a chance to just unwind and let my mind relax.

I have found that the more time to take AWAY from your work, the more you get done. You naturally think of better systems and ways to implement things that you would never think about when you are just bogged down in working.

I recommend everyone takes some time out to just relax.

At night when I'm winding down for the day... I have Google up, the Keyword Research Tool... and then I just let my mind wander. I work full-time at a corporate job as well and lunch time with my smart-phone and a notebook do the job for me. It's ridiculous how much i can scribble down, over and over haha. I personally think best when I'm pacing, so when my wife hears pacing footsteps updtairs, she knows the cylinders are churning . Glad to know I'm not the only one with this addiction. *Writing everything down is key for me, so I always have a notebook with me. Catch.com is also great so I can preserve my ideas online and access the info from anywhere.

    Great topic.
