FIXED: Disaster with my Google Account. Has this happened to you?

I don't get it. I've had my Google account since 2005 - and now, it won't let me log in. It won't let me send a request for the password, because it doesn't even recognize the username I've been using since 2005 - no such account exists, apparently.

Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Fortunately, I'm not running any Adwords campaigns right now, or Adsense - but I can't get in to view my Google Analytics or anything else. I was trying to submit one of my products to a specific Google database when it refused my login.

I've sent a query via their form, but they demand so many details - like when I last logged in, the name of my blogger blog (one that I hadn't used yet so don't have it written down anywhere), when did I open those different services. I just don't remember any of that stuff. And you can't even insert special comments, like items they list that don't allow a proper answer. Like, do you have access to the email you signed up with - well, yes I do, but if I hit the yes button, it asks for details I cannot answer - like, use it to get your password. Well (duh), IT DOESN'T WORK BECAUSE IT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE MY USERNAME!

So now I have to wait for them to get back to me, a timeline that did not sound very promising, ie: they'll 'see' if my account can be restored and 'we'll contact you if we need to', type of thing. In fact, they issue a warning hinting that if your responses {sound suspicious} they might just cancel the account entirely.

It sure would be good to get some faster access to services. I tried changing the password to my Gmail account, but never received the confirmation email at my regular email address.

So I'm stuck. Any suggestions, ideas on what's happened? Has it happened to you and if so, what did you do about it? What did you discover?

Thanks.

Sylvia

    Sylvia,

It could just be a flaw on the server, I would wait a few hours and try it again.

Thanks Charles... yes, I did. Maybe it needs even more time. I keep trying, but am getting the same results.

If it is the server, wouldn't it be affecting other users as well? Is anyone else having problems logging into the Google Accounts today?

I didn't have any analytics data in my account 10 hours ago but it's back now. Hopefully just problems on googles end.

The only google accounts I have lost have been when I was trying some blackhat techniques.
So I bet they have backups and can get your account back up.

Sometimes your activity even legit can set off automatic filters that are set up to stop abuse.

Too many login/logoffs, too much activity in a short period of time, bouncing all over the place looking for what you want, internet connection errors. etc.

"Attention: You have been logged out by us for your own safety and security." lol

Oh, yes... I've had that, too, while I was running a keyword search using a desktop tool instead of an online one. First, Google gave me a stupid error showing 'no results' for an extremely popular keyword - and then an error like you say, something to the effect that whatever I was doing appeared to be spam or something - and that I was locked out of Google. "try again later". So I jumped over to Yahoo!

Stupid Google! They are such idiots!~ This isn't the first time I've had some issue with my account, but this is the first time it has completely gone. Can you imagine if I were running some Adwords campaigns? Holy Crikey!

Sorry to hear that. That's scary and is a real disaster, I hope you can get your account back.

    Hi,

l suggest you hold on for now and try again later. Google won't do that unless something's got stuck somewhere.

Next time, ensure you use the same password as your gmail for any of your google account.

I was using the same password and login... since they changed their setup so you could use one login for all your accounts. Before, you had to have different ones for blogger, adwords, etc.

I'm confused, SYlvia - do you have a username that's different from the email you use on that account? I ask because I always sign into my G accounts with an email address, not a separate login name. May be a dumb question, but have you tried signing in using the email address as the username?

      Hi Kevin,

Well, it took them most of the day, but they've fixed it... sort of.

Yes, the login does take an email address. I've never really used my Gmail account. It was just set up for a project I was doing, that has now ended. My account was under another regular email address. I'd been using this same login for years so I haven't a clue what happened.

Google emailed to say they investigated and enabled my account, but changed the login email. So I tried going in to change the password as they said to do, but it doesn't work with the email address the changed it to. So I sent another problem form and they came back stating they had change it again -- so now it's the email address I started with. BUT it still won't let me log in with either of those regular email addresses. It only works with the Gmail account. So I guess this means I can never cancel my Gmail account or I'll lose my Google account again.

It would be nice if they'd give some sort of explanation as to what happened - they make it sound like it was MY fault - and I haven't done anything.

Of course, they don't allow you to talk directly to "the team" if you have problems with their instructions, as explained re email address login. I ended up wasting hours filling in forms, retesting and waiting for access.

      Stupid Google!

I don't know whether you can do this with Adwords or Adsense, but at least with Analytics you can give multiple email addresses (=accounts) access to your Analytics. This might be a good thing to do as insurance for if this happens (to anyone) some time down the road.

Good tip. I don't know if you can do it with AdWords or AdSense either, but worth looking into!

When I changed over from my old blogger account to the 'new' all-singing-all-dancing one about 18 months ago I had signing in problems too because my old blogspots were still only accessible with my old details and my new login didn't always work.

      Now it's fine.

But, yes. Gmail really would be most grateful if you kept your account with them

I had login problems after the changeover, too. But it's been fine ever since those first few months. And then. Poof!

The last thing I did with my account was to start a new Blogger blog. I had set up a few over the years but don't really do much with them. But about a month ago, I started 2 new ones, so it's not like my account has been sitting idle. There was some suggestion that this might be why - if your account is not used for awhile, I guess Google figures you don't need it and pulls it. Can't be in this case, though.

I don't do anything that could be detrimental to my account - as far as I know. I don't send multiple or spam email. People get on my GR list and receive whatever is in there, other than the notifications when I post to my WP blog.

I haven't a clue how to hack into anything (my Google Account is a good indicator) - so it's not like I could be accused of that.

Oh well. We are left to wonder, it seems. No way to question what happened or how to prevent it in the future. No way to contact Google directly with any f/u questions when problems persist. Automation, automation, automation.

Stupid Google! (This should be gone soon - probably tomorrow - but it just makes me so mad not to have any control over something that is so relevant to my business.)

Thanks, Peter... I've written it down - in case I need it in the future.

And thanks to everyone who helped me with this.
