Dr.Pepper Offends Women With New Slogan...

Could they be subliminally trying to attract women by saying it's not for them?

Some women and men will take offence, some won't.. But, people are already talking about it.

Edit: I can't remember the last time I discussed a Dr Pepper commercial, nor could I describe one off the top of my head..

  Since I don't get caught up in the "culture" of WF, I often don't understand what certain leading lights of the forum are ranting about. It only makes sense when you consider that posting a rant is a way of marketing yourself and your products. I see what they're doing and honestly, I think less of them for it.

I'm guessing it's just good marketing. In Texas Dr Pepper is a big seller. In Colorado not so much.

Tell someone they can't have something and thats all they will think about.

Just an observation but any time you tell a woman something is only for men they want it. Fighting in the military is only for men. Military schools are only for men. Certain clubs are only for men. Football (American) is only for men. Even though there are girl scouts some want to be in the boy scouts. Jock straps used to be for men now they are called thongs---hahahahaha

Basically women want everything that is considered only for women and everything that is considered only for men. Don't get mad or offended with me. Just look at the facts.

It gives a few people the chance to talk about men vs women - but that's not of much interest either.

I agree. My brother eats yogurt, so that's one I personally know of. There are lots of products that seem to target more of one gender than the other. Beer, for instance, and car stuff and Marlboro cigarettes (remember that hunk of a Marlboro man?)

No doubt, there are a lot of products like that.

It has always been obvious that "DR." Pepper is a male product because girls can only be nurses, teachers and housewives...NOT doctors!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I am only kidding. Wonder if anybody will highlight this text, or if they will think I'm being serious.

That being said, I don't think the company wants people to think of Dr. Pepper as the "male soda". I think it's that a lot of men feel that diet soda is somehow feminine (much as a lot of them think yogurt is feminine), so this ad tries to break that stereotype. They want men to feel okay with drinking Dr. Pepper 10.

I personally couldn't care less. I eat yogurt AND drink diet soda, though something still prevents me from eating quiche.

Gender bias marketing is nothing new. History is littered with stuff like this.

Go look 'em up.

As for the commercial itself purely on its entertainment value, I liked it. I
thought it was kind of funny. It was certainly not to be taken seriously.

Actually, I thought the part asking women if they were enjoying the movie
was the best part of all. So stereotypical that men like those kind of movies
and women hate them.

Not true, because I'm not a big fan of 'em either. No, I didn't see Rambo or
any of those mindless flicks.

But Dr Pepper accomplished what it set out to do and in marketing, that's
all that matters.

It got us talking about it (I didn't even know Dr. Pepper 10 existed)

It got a bunch of women all bent out of shape and thus will either boycott
the soda or buy it just to say "screw you, I can drink it if I want"

And it got a lot of men who probably felt funny drinking a diet soda (cause
only women drink them, right?) to maybe try it.

IMO, this is brilliant marketing, though like I said...it's nothing new.

OT? No way. This is most DEFINITELY on topic if you're a marketer and want
to actually learn something about marketing.

  The ad is a joke, as in "intended to be funny." If they really wanted to insult women, there are far more effective models riding the airwaves.
  
  There's a product aimed at middle-aged men, a hair dye 'for beards and mustaches', which features a retired baseball player.
  
  In the first scene, he's shown mowing his lawn decked out in his salt-and-pepper goatee. An attractive, younger woman walks by. The guy smiles at her, and she takes one look and gives him the skunk eye.
  
  He colors his beard.
  
  In the next scene, the dark-bearded player is lounging in a lawn chair. The young woman is cheerfully serving him a cold drink, while her friends (in equally skimpy attire) are doing his yard work for him...
  
  Or you could look to any of the 'Axe' products aimed at horny teenagers.
  
  I've noticed that the American ad industry seems to have adopted the "insult them into buying" approach, and what is supposed to be a creative industry wouldn't know an original idea if it bit them on the ass.
  
  Skipping the Dr. P. and the 'lightest lite beer', as close to water as they could make it and still legally call it 'beer'...

  It's not really for men, as a gender anyway. It is for a particular sub group within that demographic. Either age-specific, or for people who still don't realize they have grown up.
  
  The odds that it is exactly 10 calories per can are pretty slim, unless they back formulated it anyway, but the idea that the soda rates as a 10, that is a pretty big deal.

If your pic is you, i'd say you'd probably have more testosterone than most woman, with the cigar and chest tats. Don't take this as offensive, these kind of woman usually do better in business cause they more aggressive, and have thick skin.

I don't drink any soda anymore but when I did dr.pepper was one of my favorite. It always gave me the feeling of a old soda, made by classy company that continued generation after generation. To see this commerical however that pretty much erases that impression.

This is an example of EFFECTIVE marketing.

Why?

Effective marketing POLARIZES people into BELIEVERS
who love and NON-BELIEVERS who hate.

The more you REPEL some people, the stronger you'll

The worst thing they could do is to put out a 'safe' ad

in the drinks marketplace too (rather than focusing

Except that I don't see any advantage at all in marketing soda to just one sex. There are people who love Dr. Pepper and people who think it stinks. I'm the latter and no commercial for Dr. Pepper would make me want one unless the commercial said ... we made it taste like coke or pepsi.

There are already some women who do like Dr. Pepper. I don't see any "macho" aspects of Dr. Pepper to try to sell. It's an either you like that nasty taste, or you don't.

Yorkie bars did the same things years ago. It was a long running campaign, even having a bit NOT FOR GIRLS on the wrapped where the word 'yorkie' should be.

Yep, and I don't see any advantage to Yoplait targeting ALL of their products toward women. I still eat yogurt, but the Yoplait commercials are some of the most sexist, anti-male drivel I have ever seen.

It appears to be a marketing attempt to bait women into proving; it is for women too. It would be interesting to see how it plays out in the end.

I think it's done lightheartedly enough that any one who gets offended is likely looking for reason to be offended.

As a guy, the commercial really didn't hit any hot buttons with me. It does, however, seem that it has gotten the ladies talking???

PS - I wouldn't be surprised to see a sequel ad showing an equally fit female actor stealing the scene by somehow one-upping the males and walking away with the "Pepper"

too much credit--that they want to create buzz, polarize etc.

I saw the CNN news item on this ad and they said that the
company was trying to brand a diet product as more masculine
because men tend to think that "diet ____" are for women.

So they were just trying to 'masculinize' their product. All
those other good marketing techniques came by sheer
accident.

Again, I say we are giving these ad agencies too much

I think it's a great marketing campaign. If people are talking about it, and they are, and not just here in WF, then consumers might just have to try it, both men and women.

I thought of Lady Gaga when reading through this thread. I am not one of her fans and no doubt older than her average followers. But people talk about her. She does outrageous things and gets noticed. She has created an image that intrigue people and whether you like her music or not, you probably heard about her.

Does her image or marketing campaign result in sales? Maybe.

Will DP's campaign result in sales? I think so. Even if it are from the curious, they might buy it once and never again. As with any marketing campaign, time will tell.

It's a short slogan that's easy to remember.

It peaks interest for women, and they want it because its "not for them"

Men want it because it gives them something thats "theirs"

It's very different than a lot of the other commercials out there, because it's offensive. Creativity stands out, annd people will remember it much better than the 20 car commericals that are all the same.

It is just a soft drink after all.

If it was opposite and said just for women, than men would not care and nor would the general public.

The real slogan should be " not for children" for I see everyday where soft drinks are the only product put into their mouths.

As a woman, I can honestly say that I love this commercial!

Not for the reasons you may think, though.

I absolutely abhor the taste of Dr. Pepper! The one time I tried it, I immediately spit it back out and had a nasty aftertaste in my mouth until I took a big guzzling swig of Pepsi.

So when they state that Dr. Pepper isn't for women, I don't have to feel guilty for hating it. And they gave me an easy out when politely offered one.

All that being said, they certainly have got their product brand to be the one being discussed more than the others, at least for a while.

Yeah, it's generating some buzz. But is it another "thatsa spicy meatball" moment, where people remember the campaign but don't buy the product?

Look at the conversation here on a marketing forum. It's about Dr Pepper's brand in general. Most are ignoring the new product launch in favor of an 'I love it' vs. 'I hate it' referendum on the Dr Pepper...

Yorkie "It's not for girls" indeed comes to mind...

The fact there are so many responses, suggests enough buzz has been created, I really don't want to say "there is no such thing as bad publicity" but I think the shock value here will lead to long lasting brand recognition.
