McAfee Secure - Really worth it?

Just been on the phone to McAfee, launching a new site for one of our brands shortly and figured it may be worth getting one for our website.

They quoted me $1479/year (123/mo) to start with, then I managed to get them down to around 900/year. Which I still thought seemed expensive, considering you only get a simple badge for your site?

Our payments are handled by third parties anyway, so is it really worth forking out upwards of $75/month for a GIF image just to give our customers piece of mind?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I'm not 100% sure what "McAfee Secure" does but if you want to create a sense of security use a TurboSSL from GoDaddy and display that certificate - it's only $15 / yr and is much better than nothing IMHO.

Have you asked your customers? Maybe you could do a survey of past customers and see how many almost didn't buy because of this issue? Are your competitors using these security badges?

For me, I think there are many other, less expensive things you can do to make your customers feel secure such as a great about us page with an address, pictures of the staff, etc.

Am I understanding correct that for $900 all you bet is a simple image?!

If that is the case, It is not worth it.

I just recently installed a mcafee site advisor thingee on my browser.

I don't know how much help it is to pay for this service. You can have some people submit your site and who ever has siteadvisor installed will see a little green check mark next to the site while browsing.

I submitted a site and didn't have to pay anything.

I don't need no stinkin badges[]

I think that is way too much money.

You need to test. On a sports betting membership site of mine, a Mcafee secure badger decreased sales on average by 17%. Probably because people start thinking about security, something that was not an issue in their minds while reading the copy.

Yeah, I think these images are worth it. I found a site not too long ago that talked about it. It was trusttheseller.com (Not all that great of a site but had some useful information on it). It helped me get a good grasp on why the images help so much.

    Wow, this thread is old!

Didn't end up going through with the trust logo - but we did get an EV SSL certificate recently for our new payment gateway. It makes the browser bar appear green - I feel this has a stronger impact that a lousy GIF image which you pay $100/month for!

For a simple badge, you can use honest online. I have it on my site, it's $30 per month and it's well known on the Internet.

You can see it in action at the bottom of my site.

I'm sure mac afee is worth it too.

Hey, we are talking about mcafee badge, not the antivirus software.

I am not sure what's features of McAfee Secure. If it only provide a gif, price is too high. You can have many choice to replace them. If they can do more jobs, you can take them into consideration.
