driving traffic to squidoo lenses

My lenses don't get much action although some of them are pretty good.

Since they are not the main websites that I want to build up I do not want to spend a lot of money and time getting links, but I think I should do more than I do.

What are the quickest and most important ways to get traffic to my lenses?

Squirto got stuffed hardcore with billions of articles.

I didn't liked that site anyway, maybe only for seo...

    Better make your own site.

I recently heard that they are working on cleaning up the site. They are purging a lot of the crap.

There are no easy ways to get traffic to your lenses. Other than SEO and the "regular way" (by this I mean all the techniques you'd use for your own site as well), I assume you could contact other lens owners and do an interlinking between your lenses! So you can siphon some of their traffic. If you do this a couple of times it will add up. Be polite when approaching them 'cause most of them are too proud of their lenses, god knows why

I've had better results with hubpages. Perhaps you should try it as well.

This makes a lot of sense, I never thought about link sharing with other lensmasters. I think I want to try that!

Marian, I wonder why hubpages have worked better for you. I know my way around squidoo so I would like to be able to optimize them but I am open to hubpages.

Hub Pages can help more. Their content does tend to rank a little better and also has a more active community. A lot on squidoo is junk articles; hubpages has article rating score and constant editors and duplicate check to ensure a high quality community and thus meaning more activity and more SEO Love naturally.

Squidoo can still easily rank for many terms it would take your site much longer to rank for. Just add a little link juice to it. The great thing is it's not your main site so no need to worry about the type of link juice you add in or be too delicate with the link building process.

It's great to get fast exposure and some good links.

HubPages has hated a lot lately ever since Google did it's panda update and debunked HubPages PR ranking a while back. Ever since that happened HubPages started banning certain posts/marking them as spam.

with that being said if HubPages spots an affiliate link then you're pretty much S.O.L.

However you can just create a random website which acts as a squeeze page, and use that link instead. This way you can capture a lead and then market to them via email. Or you can redirect to a squeeze page and have a big "click here button" after some convincing copy, and the click here button would be your affiliate link or whatever.

As far as getting traffic to squidoo? hmmm...I'd personally say just make a YouTube video. YouTube has WAY more authority over Squidoo. Plus it's easier to make a video than it is writing a long seo optimized article.

And if you aren't that good at making a video, then just make a slide show or go on Fiverr and find one of those crazy people who scream stuff obnoxiously loud to make one for you lol. It'll only cost you $5. You can upload it to your channel, and then start doing backlinks/mass submission article marketing to rank that YouTube video.

You'll definitely rank a lot faster and higher than a lens.

You can also do video responses so your video gets more exposure, etc.

    hope this helps!

    cheers!

Thanks. One of the reasons I still like Squidoo is that it can be a source of income itself as you can get some small adsense income and a bit of commission from Amazon. Some people do quite well, I haven't cracked the big time though.

One great tool for those using Squidoo is the Squidutils site, starting with the "lens-check" feature.I have found that by properly utilizing using this tool to check my lenses, their traffic naturally increased.Once I used this tool to evaluate the health of the lenses,I fixed the problems and then learned to build the appropriate links!

I was wondering about that too. I started to build lenses pointing back to my own sites (it is an experiment) but realised that I would still have to promote my lenses to generate traffic to them. I think I prefer spending time marketing my own sites for now. Wonder if anyone has had success with this method.

Squidoo lenses react favorably to backlinking and some of my lenses rank on the 1st page of Google - obviously, just as with a normal web page, the amount of backlinking is going to be determined by the level of competition for the keyword terms. These lenses get a lot of traffic from Google and I make direct commissions income or ad sharing income via Squidoo with them. I also use my lenses to link back to my own money sites.

Also, naturally, you need to have on-page SEO optimized, unique content on your lens in order to rank well.

You can also get traffic via Squidoo's internal search engine. To make sure you rank high on there, become a good squidoo citizen. Play by their rules, create unique content, comment on other lenses (but never leave a backlink to your own lenses), mark other lenses as favorites (but NEVER your own lenses), become fans of other lensmasters, etc. It also works as a snowball effect - as soon as you start getting more traffic and your content is good, people will favorite your lens and the lens ranking will improve, meaning that you'll rank higher in Squidoo's internal search engine.

Also make sure your lenses on related topics are linked together.

In my opinion you can't get much traffic from sqidoo it's not easy so do a regular SEO work for getting more traffic.

It's always important to keep tabs on the trends in the industry. A "great" site today may not be the same tomorrow:

Pandalized: Websites Negatively Impacted by Google's Panda Algorithm Change.

Even though they were one of the hardest slammed, they are rebounding nicely.

Above all, create something of high quality, of value, and you'll find that, over time, you'll get unsolicited backlinks to that content.

In business terms, it makes very little sense, in the long run, to drive traffic to a site you don't yourself own or ultimately control.

All the people above saying "It's much better to have your own site" are completely right. Ignore them at your peril.

Even your own free blog on free hosting (Byethost/Weebly/000WebHost/Yola/Blinkweb), which you own and control, is a far better bet than a site which someone else owns and controls, on which they impose their own continually changing terms of service and their own idiosyncratic and inconsistent interpretations of them.

Squidoo gives you nothing that you can't get (free of charge) elsewhere, a lot more safely and sensibly.

Don't imagine that because Squidoo's own home page has a high page-rank, that's going to make your backlinks from your own Squidoo page worth anything special. (That's as misinformed and mistaken as imagining that an article in Ezine Articles is going to give you a worthwhile backlink in itself, just because EZA's home page has a high PR. It's hardly relevant - your article is still on its own PR-0 page.)

It really is worth spending 20 minutes reading this thread slowly and carefully.

A lot of my traffic from Squidoo comes directly from Squidoo. Post in the forums on Squidoo. You will get a lot of traffic and angel blessings. Also comment in other lenses. The more active you are on Squidoo the more traffic you will get.

I have a few Squidoo lenses, but I will not be making any new ones.

On one of them, if you visit it, you will see this message:

This lens has been taken down

Squidoo is a place for writing and sharing original opinion content. First-hand reviews. Recommendations. Storytelling. Experience sharing. Advice. Our best authors craft useful pages that you'll be glad you found.

When a lens violates our Terms of Service (no spam, no plagiarism, no evildoing, among other things) or otherwise proves to be lower-quality than our community wants to support, we take it down from public view.

We hope you'll enjoy these other lenses from our Business & Work category that have been handcrafted by interesting, real people.
When that initially happens, they will give you a chance to "correct" your lens to conform to their TOS. However, despite their insistence they are run by real people, somehow, they are unable to tell you what terms you violated and leave you to try to guess.

Well, on that particular lens, my content was original. I wrote it myself. I didn't do any spamming or any other kind of "evildoing" that I know of. I created a lens and that was about it. I didn't spam the link or anything. I didn't do anything differently than what I did on my other lenses.

So, what did I do wrong? I have no idea. And Squidoo won't tell you.

So, now when you go to that lens I created, that's the message you see.

It makes me look bad. It makes me look like I'm a plagiarist or a spammer or evildoer, or that I write poor quality content or that I'm uninteresting or not a real person. However you look at it, it does not make me look good.

That's the risk you take when you build something on a third-party site that someone else controls. You only have the illusion of control. You may own your content, but you do not own the site. They can take your page down at any time for any reason and put up a message like that that will make you look bad.

My advice is to drive traffic to your own website, to a site that is under your control. Plus, you can get 100% of your AdSense revenue on your own site, as opposed to 50% from Squidoo. You should put your efforts into something that will make you money--not something that makes Seth Godin money. You could probably use the money more than him anyway.

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Squidoo is really easy to use verses making your own website, and it can be a good way to start driving traffic. The key to overcoming the Google updates is to make sure you are giving Google and the visitors what they are after, and this means both quality and quantity in the lens' content.

I regularly see lenses which are reviewing various products, and these sorts of keywords are by nature easier to rank for, at least in my experience. Overall, squidoo does work well, but it does take a consistent effort in making your lens good.

Thanks to all your comments. I have been away from this forum because I promised myself I would not buy any more WSO's until the end of the year and the best way is to stay away.

I was pleased at all the action when I came back - I am actually going to try to get some action with my Squidoo lenses because I have put a lot of work in them and want to get them as profitable. Some people make a nice living - perhaps just a sideline but a profitable, usually with Amazon products on Squidoo.

I have found that my lenses have got a considerable bit of more traffic. I have gone on a commenting spree - as well as sending my lenses to Lensroll and registering them with Google. We shall see how it works out.

Here's how to get traffic to your lenses:

    KEYWORDS
    DE-CLUTTER YOUR LENSES
    TAGS
    OUTBOUND LINKS
    UPDATE YOUR LENS
    WRITE A QUALITY ARTICLE
    PLACE A FAVORITE LINK
    ADD A POLE
    FORUM MARKETING
    EMAILS

Keep checking back to the blog to get a lot more traffic to your lens. Simple small step can lead to massive change so aim to get a least one of these done each day.

I often find Squidoo lenses on the first page of Google, including a couple of mine.

Bloomingrose, do you use the tags feature when you post/edit? I was told you can use up to 20, but I'm up to 40 on my main lenses and they see the most traffic....when I check the stats, they're coming straight from Google....then I add the keywords that ppl are using that brought them there.....I do this about once every other week....the traffic and the $ continue to creep up.

Also, I add Amazon images with hyperlink html to go directly to my Amazon site for larger commission.

Through one lens I made, I found my entire family on my father's side by accident....so I have a soft spot for Squidoo.

    Cheers,
    Terri

There are several ways to increase traffic on Squidoo.

One of the best tips is to use an eye-catching image in your intro module. This image is featured in the right sidebar of lenses in your niche and will make people click.

You can also copy the tags for the most visited lenses in your industry as you will have an higher chance of apparing in their sidebar.

For Google rankings my advice is to interconnect your lenses and build new lenses to support your best. You can also build external backlinks, but Squidoo keeps an eye on this and will remove your lense if the backlinks are spammy or just made for SEO.
