Do you use Akismet? If not, enable it immediately.
There are other spam protection plugins for WP as well! Do a search in the WP plugins section and try a few.

      This ^^^

Also and there's no point doing this with bots but if you know a spammer is real, I tend to make their comment a really glowing testimonial to my site and change the link/s to one of my other sites.

That way they can contribute to my sites and when they come back they realise there's no point spamming my sites.

Oh I love that! I was wondering how I could turn that around on those spammy jerkfaces.

I also took the time one day to write an email to each one that told them if they were really looking for traffic they could visit... (my specific web page of tools). Anything to create traffic to my site that is not a total waste.

Thanks for the tip Richard Van!

Have you thought about installing some kind of spam-software like askimet?

Or maybe adding some form of captcha to the comment form to try and reduce the number of spam comments?

Well which do you hate more? Captcha or spammers?

I hate Captcha too, but when it got to the point where I was deleting HUNDREDS of spam comments every night, I put it in. Haven't had spam since.

        I hate BOTH ...

... but from here i think i will just use FB with this new blog
and that should stop the spam.

I don't wanna ask my readers to use Captcha.

Well Akismet is good. You can also try Growmap Anti Spambot, SI Captcha Anti-Spam, Bad behavior and WP-reCaptch. Akismet is a paid plugin but the ones I mentioned are free. I use Growmap. It doesn't totally stop spam but spam happens very rarely now. You definitely need to stop spam. It takes a up a lot of bandwidth. Can slow your site down and it makes it look unattractive. Anyways hope this helped out.

It is NOT a 'paid plugin'. There are differing levels of service, one is free.

How does this stuff make it into the wild?

I don't know, maybe they read the Akismet page on Wordpress.org?

Akismet API keys are free for personal blogs, with paid subscriptions available for businesses and commercial sites.

"Free" with a suggested contribution of $36.00 a year, that is.

If you have ads on your blog, you're commercial, and Akismet wants $5/month from you.

I don't use Akismet. It's not worth $60 a year to me. I deal with spam by hand and use the Comment Blacklist under Settings > Discussion.

Definitely install a spam filter like Akismet. But you might also install Bad Behavior and turn it on for awhile to see if it makes a difference. It can sometimes keep out people in error so I usually don't have it running all the time.

    In Settings > Discussion >
I check everything except Break comments into pages with ....

In addition, I use WP SpamFree plugin and I rarely get a spam comment. If you actually do want comments, just not spam comments, you may not want to make users login to leave a comment, but that pretty effectively eliminates most spam.

I am using GASP plugin in the wordpress blogs and didn't get any spam from the bots. Akismet is paid so I don't think small bloggers will prefer to use it. GASP plug in is working well for me

I use growmap antispam plugin and I also strip live urls from comments section for those who want to drop tons of links. You could always just write a quick comment policy which can help deter non-bot comment spammers.

E.g Don't waste your time commenting if you are a spammer because your comment will never go live.... lame example but you get my point.

I know it's gotta suck, but every program, or software I see come out on clickbank is teaching, or automating spamming to get ranking in the search engines...

Alot of those marketers have no choice especially because there is no more adwords traffic...

Have you tried a different platform to share your information on?

It not only sucks but could get a marketer in trouble:
      - CAN-SPAM now applies to message boards and social networks according to the courts.
      - T&C might prohibit spamming of a site, what if you are violating that? That's a crime according to some rulings.

If you are still looking for an AntiSpam Plugin for your website, you could give "SpamTrawler" a try.

I am not sure if it is ok to leave links here, so I suggest search it in google.

I used to play around with dozens of free scripts and WP Plug-ins like Akismet, Badbehavior, etc. etc. I wasted months researching the subject as it was a major obstacle to my online ventures

The bottom line for me personally, protect the whole site against anything thrown at it:

    See

There is just one tool standing out from the crowd to protect websites - SpamTrawler. To protect LANs, home offices, schools, small to medium enterprises - Get a FortiGate Router

If you are using wordpress.....I would suggest that you make it so users cannot comment unless their registered. Then, check plug-ins.............there a bunch of different ones, and just give them a try (I suggest one -at-a-time, LOL) to see what works best for you. Everyone has their opinions......trust me, just try them out.

Obviously the best of them is AkisMet but you can also look at some of the alternatives like

    - SimpleCaptcha
    - defensio
    - WP-Spam-Hitman (plugin)
    - Bad Behavior (plugin)
    - AVH First Defense Against Spam (plugin)
    - Akismet

Making registration a condition before any comment is the only way, in my experience. There is no way of knowing how many potential comments get deflected, though.

I do this on all my blogs now, after learning the hard way. It was either that or disallow comments completely.

  • Hi Alex, Akismet in this case will save your life blocking all the spam. It's free for personal use, and you can get an API Key straight from their website.

Another good option it's to implement Captcha for avoiding spammer with automatic tools to post thousands of blog comments automatically. Some newbies can see their posts as personal, but it's simple to catch them. And a captcha will help you to solve this fastly.

Also the Richard Van idea it's great, I used it many times. But there is also a WSO somewhere with a Wordpress plugin to do it automatically!

    See you soon,

I resonantly came across a WP plugin called WP-Spaminator (I have no affiliation with the product or owner), which looks quite interesting.

According to the sales page, it changes any spam comments to include your links and your keywords and also pulls in fresh content via RSS feeds.

I haven't tried it myself, but I'm tempted to give it a go on one of my smaller sites.

You can install all the anti-spam plugins in the world, but it seems like you can never fully eliminate spam entirely. If you wan't my honest opinion there's no such thing as junk traffic or bad publicity - bring it on! Maybe you should hire a moderator to filter through it all. Also posting this question on this forum is stupid because 99% of the people here are spammers that are now hipped to your lack of spam security. Thanks for sharing another source to broaden the presence for our marketing campaigns.
