Why not write for yourself?

Take a look at sites like Amazon and Pixmania. They hire people to write about the products they either sell themselves or resell.

If you can write about technology, you can join affiliate programmes and write about the products and add your affiliate link to the text.

I don't know the name of that type of job in English. In Danish, it's "tekst-forfatter" (literately "text writer"). If you write about the benefits of a product, you can make good money. More if you work for yourself than if you're employed.

The thing is, if I am employed then I will have a guaranteed source of income.

But then with IM I will never be guaranteed, maybe I will do a bit of internet marketing until I know I will be able to sustain myself.

Are there many IRL jobs available though in this economic time? (uk)

I'm sorry to break it to you, but by working for others, you can NEVER have a guaranteed source of income.

The manager of the company can run away with all the money, or the company will crash... Lots of things can happen.

Correct, there's no guarantee in IM either.

But while you're under somebody else's control by being employed, you can do a lot to secure your payment, if you're working for yourself.

I realize that this is not for everybody, and you prefer to have a job. That's fine. You just need to know that nothing in life is guaranteed.

I know there is unemployment in Denmark in that area, because I know a Danish woman who'd been looking for work as a text writer for years.

I know that Pixmania only hires French text writers (or whatever the name - copy writers? or is that only for sales letters?) and have translators turning those texts into other languages for a minimum wage (a little more than 1,000 euro per month), 8-12 translations per hour, demanding high quality and really good insight into technical matters, while working in noisy surroundings.

Maybe you can find some big technical English home pages to work for? I'm not familiar with those, but you probably are. Why not contact them?

Yeah, write for yourself. Trying to freelance for others is highly competitive, and no one is willing to pay what you're really worth because there are so many freelancers out there who write for next to nothing.

If you need money to live on in the meantime, find some kind of "real job" to keep you in food, clothing and shelter until your writing income starts to grow in amount and consistency.

"Writing articles for a few people", for websites, wouldn't really be much of a trial run at all for contributing to magazines or newspapers: the word "article" is typically used with very different meanings in those two very different contexts.

We've had a few similar threads here, recently, with posts advising people in the same sort of situation as yourself. I think you'll find them pretty helpful.

They post writing gigs daily, and have categories for technical and magazine writing.

The site also offers information on getting started in freelance writing.

Start with your own blog. Learn some SEO techniques to make your writing better, then when you have 10 or so posts you can start writing for others. You can use your blog to show off your work and put up an ad with your blog as your samples.
