Newcommer in need of mentors.

Hi my name is Nick and I am a newcommer to this forum, and glad to be here. I have recently been putting a lot of time in becoming aquainted with with these fabulous forums and have decided to start a local e-commerce consultant business thanks to "A Stupidly Simple Cash Cow", by David Preston. I've thought about it for a while but have decided to put the wheels in motion now. I'm currently unemployed so i really have nothing to loose. Ive put the last few bucks i have into buying business card paper, bright colored paper for flyers, address labels, envelopes, stamps and a "confidential" stamp.

I really have no experience with SEO besides what I have read about it and havent done any web page editing in about 12 years so i am beyond rusty. This aspect of the business is what kind of gets me nervous because it seems like i will have to learn it at my customers expense.

I have also become familiar with the ability to increase leads for clients through YouTube. I havent made any videos yet but at least this is something i can become aquainted with on my own time. Seems like a good option for me to introduce to my first few clients to add more value to compensate for my lack of experience.

I'm pretty sure i can impliment a capture mechanism on a web page but i have a few questions. Does the autoresponder service that i sign up with provide me the code that i can copy and paste into the home page? Also I have found the ability to set microsoft outlook to autorespond and i am wondering since it is possible to do that then why pay an autoresponder service to do something i may be able to implement myself? Or are the two concepts totally different? I'm also wondering if i should limit the types of services that i offer untill i become a bit more aquainted with the business.

And the big question is price. How much do i charge for these different services? Also I'd like to know how i should bundle these services up into packages what prices should i use. I live in New Jersey which boast the highest average family incomes in the country so thinga do tend to get a bit expensive out here. The thing is people dont mind spending if they see results.

One more thing i am having trouble with is which local business do i target? I'm from North Haledon NJ so if someone would show me a few examples of businesses in my area that would be a good choice and let me know why you choose them I would be greatly in your debt.

My head is filled with all this new stuff and im just trying to put it all together.

After all these questions, i have a tip for everyone while they are trying to get a customer into investing into their work. Bring a notebook and draw a line right down the middle of the page. On one side show them the pros of your services and on the other side of the page show them what they get(or really dont get) from yellow book or whatever advertising including the price differences. I used to use this tactic when i was trying to pitch a cell phone sale to people who are walking past my kiosk in the mall when i worked for t-mobile. People like to see what they are getting as opposed to what they already have right in front of there face. Visual images will improve your ability to sell your services. Its also good to print a portfolio of all the prices of local advertisers and then show them what your sporting. I'm sure that will have them jumping on your boat in no time

Sorry for the never ending post, i am a man of many questions.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Any ideas for a name for my business? Or can i go without one?

Welcome to the forum, great place to start.

In all honestly, with your lack of skills, like you said you'd be learning at your customers expense, not fair in my opinion. For example, If you don't know SEO, how can you tell customers you can do it? Not exactly something you can master in a day. Don't mean to be rude, just don't see how you can be a e-com consultant with out all the skills.

Maybe focus or specialize only on what you can do well?

Well I am a quick learner and pretty damn computer savvy. Maybe ill work on a personal page to impove my SEO abilities. But for now i can still offer capture mechanisms and YoutTube videos. Theres only So much i can learn staring at a screen. I need to get out there and get some real life experience. I've also done a lot of reading on google adwords so maybe i can offer adwords campaigns. No matter what that is a learning process because it requires constant adjustment so there is no way to learn it unless you take action.

That probably only cost you a few million

I agree with Paul. The best way to attach your project is to be he project manager and not try to wear all of the hats yourself. You can find plenty of people with all the techie experience you need to provide a real service for your clients.

You are the one with the plan and many of the techies only want to do their thing and are not interested in the business aspect. So, jump in there and have at it. As you said you have little to lose.

And, while you are building your offline business you can be gaining experience with an online business of your own. This would give you extra cash flow and more experience.

    Good luck

Nick, I think you are making a good decision to start with this biz model. Take the time to read the full thread there - it is a wealth of info. Then, don't be afraid to get out there - you can outsource nearly every aspect of this biz model. You just need to be the salesman.

That said, never lie to your prospective customers - you will be found out quickly and will lose all credibility. But, there is nothing wrong with selling a service in which you manage the outsourcing. Sell yourself and your professionalism and let your prospective customers know that you have a team of experts that can implement (whatever solution you are selling).

      Good luck.

      PS - welcome to WF!

Thank you everyone for the info so far. I did some research and outsourcing seems pretty cheap. The question is what should i charge for these seperate services and what should i charge for packages. Also what services should i combine for packages. I would like to create a sheet i can show to customers that show my prices but I'm not sure how to price.

My buddies dad just opened a fried chicken restaurant in the town next to me a couple months ago. Its the only chicken restaurant in town but there are some in surrounding towns. So i talked to a friend about it and he said the business isnt doing too well. So i searched "chicken haledon" (haledon is the town its in) on google and it wasnt even listed on google business. I cant seem to find a web site for it either. I've known his family for 11 years so it shouldnt be hard for me to make a sell to them. The question is, what would be the best services i could offer to a chicken restaurant and what should i charge considering everything is going to be outsourced?

Oh bye the way, the place is called "Kickin Chicken". Has a nice ring to it.

Oh, bye the way. I believe he is the councilman in my town so my bet is he knows a lot of business owners to recomend me to.

    Hey Nick,

I wouldn't suggest you take a few years to learn Internet Marketing. But, I would suggest that you spend about a month and read everything you can about IM from the forum. Then... after you have gained some knowledge, I would go the WSO (Warrior Special Offer) section to see if there are any promos on mentorship in the area of your interest.

Remember, not all mentors are created equal. So, be sure to research your options carefully before making your final decision.

    Good luck!

Aside from the envelope suggestions above, I've had recent success using postcards. Better response vs envelopes and cheaper cpp.
