Where does EzineArticles traffic come from?

So since I began submitting to EzineArticles, this is the trend I've noticed:

1) When the article is initially approved, I get a decent to good amount of views over next couple hours. If it happened to get approved on the weekend (As it did once on a saturday... i thought they didnt do regular accounts on Sat, but this was after a holiday so maybe thats why), then this period lasts way longer.

I often get sales during this period

2) Article is indexed by Google, it gets some search engine traffic over time but not much, not at all comparable to phase 1 I listed above. This part I understand.

So the part I'm confused about is "Phase 1". The initial traffic does not appear to come from Google, or I'd think it would be more consistent.

Does it really come from their "high traffic homepage"? Maybe I'm wrong here, but I just can't picture regular users who actually buy products surfing or searching EzineArticles on their own. Webmasters looking for content to publish on the other hand I can picture surfing EzineArticles, but they probably aren't the ones buying my offers.

Where does the initial burst of traffic come from, how is it so targetted, and why does it die off after a couple of hours?

I think it goes into new articles and some people look at it.

A lot of your traffic, sad but true, comes from competing article
marketers looking for ideas for competing in the same niche.

It's a mistake to fugure all your URL clicks, if you wrote a
good article, are from prospects. Much of it, if you write
well, is likely to be espionage.

    Thanks for your reply!

What you say makes sense. But what confuses me is that this initial burst of traffic gets me a good amount of views that actually convert to sales. The residual Google traffic usually doesn't perform nearly as well. As far as I know I haven't received a residual sale from an article yet, only initially.

And after the first day of my article being submitted, the traffic to it is a joke. The one exception was my Saturday approval, which lasted until Monday (when the traffic then died off)

I've only submitted around 22 articles so far, so maybe these trends are coincidence. But the traffic I get in the very beginning of an ezine article seems to be higher volume and higher quality than residual Google traffic, so I was just wondering if there was some special way they get exposure to your article when it's first posted.

    Here what I think happen,

When your articles are approved, They are in Ezinearticles RSS feeds. So sites like squidoo and others that has these rss feed display your articles.

Say for instance you article is about puppy training, A person who has a squidoo about puppy training and has the rss feed in order to keep their lens updated regularly will have your articles displaying when they are approved.

So most of your traffic is not coming from people seaching ezinearticles.

Otherwise i don't think you would make any sales lol. People looking to buy something, I doubt they even know about ezine articles especially outside the IM niche.

    Note: This Is My Opinion.

When your article is approved a link goes on to every other article in that category at the end of the article under "Most Recent Articles in Whatever Category"

Browsers of those articles may click through to read your article, too

They get very high rankings on search engines but a lot of traffic which also comes from people publishing their articles on their sites.
