The Paradox of the IM Niche

I have noticed a few posts recently about the IM niche vs. other niche markets. Some even suggested to stop what you are doing and get right into the IM niche and start teaching others how to succeed online even if they themselves have not succeeded yet.

Like, really?

I have a theory that this is a plateau many newcomers have when getting into IM. They spend so much time learning about IM that they figure why not just get right into teaching IM right away since they have become an "expert" on the topic.

I am sure you can make some money by doing this but come on how can you be a true expert on the subject if you have not found success in another niche market? Actions speak louder than words.

Until you have succeeded in a different niche you will not do well up against the heavy competitors who have already found big success in niche markets such as dating, gaming, music, health, etc.

Let me use an example to give you a better idea of what I am talking about. Let's say there are two affiliates promoting the very popular CB product Truth About Abs.

Both affiliates do their research on the product. They build an affiliate site with Wordpress targeting a good keyword relevant to the program. They buy it, read through it a few times so they learn all about how to get six pack abs and can give an honest review as they are now "experts" on the topic.

But one affiliate goes even further and actually takes action with the program to get six pack abs. This guy is so devoted and passionate about this niche market he does the hard work of getting lean himself. To prove it he takes a before picture of himself and then goes through the program for the next 2-3 months and takes a legit after picture of himself.

Now that he knows what it is like to go through the program himself his content will shine because he will have that "been there, done that" voice thrown into it. Now he can actually call himself an expert (no quotes needed) and he has social proof to not only let people know he knows what he is talking about but he inspires the readers of his site to take action.

Obviously this affiliate will have way more potential to make way more sales given he gets targeted traffic to his site. He will be well on his way to succeed in this niche market.

Then once he has succeeded in this market he has social proof for the IM niche if he ever feels like getting into it. This is the kind of thing that many successful IMers have done time and time again.

Internet marketing is all about building trust. People want to buy from someone who they can trust, someone who is an expert. Not somebody who is an "expert". Why sell guides on how to make money when you have not made money yourself?

That is why I think it is best to start off in any niche other than the IM niche. Then after achieving success you will know what you are talking about because you went through the trial and error yourself.

It has worked for me and many others.

    I agree completely, mon oncle.

I'd even go so far as to say that in my opinion, starting off in the "IM advice niche" (and/or perhaps "Make Money Online" - clearly they overlap) is probably the single commonest mistake made by intending internet marketers who become unsuccessful and never make a living at all.

Like I said it has worked for me but on a smaller scale. Sure you can get a site ranked for a good keyword term and get targeted traffic but the real hard part is preselling them and social proof may be the most powerful way of doing that. Actions speak louder than words.

Perform the same tricks in front of crowd of soccer moms and they will be amazed at your powers.
You have a good point but if were you a very skillful magician you would amaze the newbie magicians as well. Or in other words make more sales.

I am actually more of a musician but playing in front of soccer moms is an idea.

So it's not just the paradox of the IM niche. People can "fake it until they make it" in just about any niche.
Of course you can fake it til you make it but I guess it just comes down to how the marketer wants to approach it. If you are real then you have more perks such as being able to post your picture up there and build your own long-term business. This is for those who want to build TRUST and perhaps see past the quick buck. You have to do more work and be more focused on the one niche you chose but the payoff is well worth it.

I find that doing this approach first is good because then you can start other websites in different niches just to play around with as you probably have plenty of capital from your more legit website.

There are so many angles involved but I guess it is my own personal taste to succeed in a niche other than IM and that is what I would recommend to a newbie.

You can get good at copywriting and crank out some high quality content for an IM blog to start out and then do honest reviews of products and make money.

But I guess the point I am trying to make is that following your own passion while making money is a great way to start because for many people it is harder to lose interest and then give up.

      Thanks everyone for thei input.

Wow this whole concept has sparked my interest. Maybe I should get into the IM niche.

    Unclepennybags,

I market a report here and there to the IM niche (about once a year).....lol. But 99.9% of my online income comes from non-IM markets. Personally, I have found it far easier to make money in niches that have nothing to do with making money. But hey, that's just me.

I tend to focus on lifestyle evergreen niches. Here's why:

People are always going to get married (sometimes more than once!). The couple is going to need to plan for that wedding.

Single people are always going to want to a) hook up b) or find a serious relationship c) or do kinky things with people or inanimate objects (hey, no judgment here).

America has the largest over weight population in the world, so people are always going to look to lose weight. People are also going to want to look for ways to alleviate symptoms from health issues.

Teenagers (and adults) are always going to want to get rid of acne.

Gamers are always going to want an edge in the latest game releases.

Women are always going to want to look beautiful and younger.

And that's just the tip of the tip of the of the iceberg (whew!), but you catch my drift.

Bingo. It takes a lot of extra work to do that, but it's worth it, especially if you're focusing on building a long-term business. Ultimately, that affiliate can come out with his or her own product line too.

Here's an example: I first got into the dating niche around 2003 because my friends kept telling me to write a book because I was good at meeting and dating women. In order to make my product better, I began studying pick up from some of the best dating coaches in the world. I got exposed to a lot theory and got a lot of in field practice. There was a time where I was going out almost every night trying new techniques and working on my mindset, personal development, and learning how to break it down so I could teack it to others.

And this kind of first-hand expertise shows in how I write and in the products I make. It's made a huge difference, especially in that specific sub-niche where credibility is huge.

Here's something else to think about, though, you don't even have to be the expert. That can always be out sourced.

I know jack zip about how to plan a wedding on a budget. That was one of my first products that I went into. I found and interviewed a handful of wedding planners in my county and worked out a deal with one of them to help me create a product line and a series of reports. Oh the power of the Pennysaver and Craigslist.

You are really only limited by your imagination.

However, that is like every new business anywhere offline.

I was not at all an expert when I started my first offline brick and mortar business, but I had a huge interest myself in the subject and needed the service myself and found short falls in all the other so called experts because they had gotten so "expert" at what they did, they had forgotten what it was like for someone new to that arena. I will suffice it to say, I did extremely well in that business and after expanding from California to Florida, I sold it.

I agree that IM is a niche like any other niche. And maybe a newbie to IM would be more sensitive and able to know what another newbie needs right now once they themselves get a bit beyond the total newbie stage.

Just some thoughts. I think success or failure in anything depends more on what is going on inside the person as far as their determination, desire, effort and persistance, than what the external environment factors may be.

Without any doubt, the IM/Make Money At Home is the single most difficult market to get into simply because there are so many people out there aiming in exactly the same direction.

On the other hand, it depends on your idea or angle, because if you come up with something different that actually works, you can kill it! Unfortunately however, coming up with something original, a new approach or technique that genuinely works, is the hardest part!

Bottom line is the IM niche could be lucrative if your idea is good enough, you can package it well and other marketers can use it. Otherwise, it's a real toughie...

Yes there is some truth in that you can't really teach people how to make money online when you haven't done so yourself. However, if initially you don't have the proof, you can 'borrow' proof by interviewing experts and sell that instead of your own experience. The other way is to be an internet marketing advisor, be an affiliate for someone else's products, which in a way is also borrowing proof from other successful marketers. Once you've achieved some success, then you can go off and sell your own expertise based on your own experience.

    Hey Warriors,

it is probably true that the IM niche is more sensitive to anybody selling related products, and therefore more difficult for a newbie to strike success to a certain degree.

However, as we know, this business is about delivering great value (through information) and to be able to position your brand to a very specific target audience. if you are able to do do those thing well enough you'll get enough leverage to pull it off.

Anybody that understand the basics of business (online or offline) can do this... hell i worked many years for employers that didn't have much education, intelligence or a great understanding of our society yet they were all making money...no doubt about that. If you do the right thing for your business you'll get positive outcomes in any niche and without being an "expert".

If you are honest and deliver a good offer people will notice your effort and back you up.....if you give them a good reson to

    Just a thought.

    Completely agree!

If you don't have working knowledge of IM, DON'T TEACH IT, DO IT!

By working knowledge I mean you have to have MADE money online in other niches yourself before you go out and spread your rehashed information.
