Article Syndication - Am I just unlucky?

22 replies
It seems that I must be doing something right, because webmasters are using my articles on their websites. However, not one of them have credited my site. Instead they've promoted their own product and this really bugs me.

I have contacted all 9 of them, and so far I've had only one reply. The guy said sorry and said he will put my site in their, but he hasn't so far. (That was 2 days ago)

Is this common, or have I been unlucky so far? What other steps can I take to get these lazy people to link to my site? I'm thinking of using scare tactics but not sure if this will work.

    1) Send the C&D then report these sites to Google.
    2) Make sure to insert your site URL into every articles.
    3) What kind of site your articles are published at? Foe example, do you have an RSS feed?

      I use Qondio.com and ideamarketers and make sure the settings are set so they cannot modigy the content and must include the the bio.

      When I get on page one of ideamarketers, I usually get syndicated at thousands of sites in a few days. I have never checked them all but of the ones I have checked, they always include all my bio with my links,etc.

        I've never used IdeaMarketers before. How do you appear on Page one? I mean is it based on the number of views / fresh content etc?

    Ah, I see now. In this case the only thing you can do is to report the abusers to Google.

  • Thanks for the mention of ideamarketers. Unfortunately, the site seems to be dead.

      Here's what I would do. Obviously, the webmasters liked your articles. Ask if they would like to have regular contributions, on condition the resource box is reinstated and remains intact for all future articles. Some of my own syndicated outlets have started this way.

        I would try this first, if that doesn't work... then send a DMCA as sbucciarel suggested. Obviously, the idea is to have your resource box in tact to draw targeted traffic to your content/articles/offers.

        If these webmasters are using your content (articles) and removing your resource box, they are stealing your work, and offsetting your efforts.

        As myob is perhaps the most informed on the subject, I would take his advice. If that fails to correct the problem, then hammer the message home that you won't tolerate their thievery!

        Good Luck!

      I don't know, in what time you looked at the site, now works without error. Navigation good, links also work.

      All the best,

    Don't even bother contacting them. Just send a DMCA to their host and their host will make them take it down. Instructions and sample DMCA below

    Add a Tynt script to your pages.

    Any copy/pastes will automatically add a link back to your original article at the bottom.

    tynt - leverage the power of copy and paste

    This probably isnt gonna prevent the problem altogether, but it definitely helps.

    • You're right, it's back now. But was down for about 15 minutes.

      Still loads very slowly, though.

      I'll have to check that out. I've heard of Copyscape.com which I imagine is similar, but it's good to know.

        Yeah, that is more like article theft than article syndication. You could try to work out a deal with them like myob suggested, if they don't go for it or remove your article do as sbucciarel suggest and send a DMCA.

    Yes indeed ... I don't mean it impolitely, but I can understand people laughing a little at that: the reality is that's true only of passive syndication, and only in some niches, and even then not to any very great extent anyway. But if you're just going to depend on people happening to find your articles in EZA and happening to syndicate them, there's clearly some luck involved in that.

    But of course that's hardly what article syndication is "all about", anyway, is it?

    Well, there are four common reasons for this, as far as I know. And it isn't always easy (especially without seeing everything that someone's doing) to know in what proportions they apply, in any indivdual case.

    (i) Bad luck;

    (ii) Resource boxes which people don't want to reproduce on their sites;

    (iii) Niches in which most of the available sites belong to competitors;

    (iv) Autoblogs and any other automated theft.

    Honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much. When I first started article marketing 6 years ago I was bothered by the fact that people were not using my resource box all the time. But I quickly realized most of the sites who do this aren't sites getting a ton of traffic or making a huge impact.

    There are more people out there who do it the right way than the wrong way. If you spend your time trying to make sure everyone includes your resource box when they syndicate your articles you will never get any other work done. Just keep putting out great content and don't worry about it.

      GoodnightSweetRatRace,

      While this is a bit off topic, I too am implementing article syndication as a primary source of traffic and to reach some long-term income goals I've set out to conquer, and share similar interest to succeed using these methods.

      So, hearing that this form of "thievery" is not uncommon to people using your articles without giving you due credit, I started exploring the forum some more, and found a pretty cool WSO for less than $7 that may help change your perspective a bit. (*Definitely gave me some great insight!)

      While it's in sync with everything Alexa, John McCabe, Paul M, and myob have shared openly in the threads, this WSO amazed me... as it takes what's been shared and simplifies an employable method to accelerate success via article marketing, and is provided by Sean Mize who has submitted 24k + articles to EZA.

      While I am not sure if it's for you, or if you may have already stumbled upon the thread, it helped me to 'think' a bit differently in my approach to article marketing, and can still be of great benefit to anyone using article syndication as well.

      If nothing less, I felt it may benefit anyone with an interest to article syndication, and after listening to the audio Sean recorded... I can attest it is very much an eye-opener.

      To anyone looking to make money through article marketing, do check this out... it's the best $7 I have spent in a long, long while.

    First be your own webmaster!
    second I use wordpress and they have a plugin that protect your site from been copied. As soon as they right click you can give them a message. Than make sure you have on the bottom of your website the copy right, when not you gave them green light. It will be also good to use your name in your articles and hyperlinks.

    1. You can explicitly state the terms of usage of your article on other sites includes the link back to your site, or inclusion of the author resource box

    2. You can slip in links within your content itself, so that at least that will point back to your resources.

    3. You can 'brand' your article in a way that readers will know you're the author and find a way back to your site, if they feel your content is worth it.

    4. You can use the fact they syndicated your content as a springboard to building a relationship which leads to further syndication.

    5. You can use "scare tactics" - but that destroys the relationship once and for all, decide if that's what you want.

    In the ultimate analysis, your link/syndication partners are like business partners. You don't want the unethical ones, and accept them as the cost of doing business - and focus on the ones with ethics and an emphasis on delivering value, and leverage their networks for extending your reach.

    Hope this helps.

    All success
    Dr.Mani

    P.S. - Alexa, GREAT list of 4 points. Esp. the one about "resource boxes" that webmasters WANT to use... that's really important.
