Increasing the Security Of Your Income

This past week I have been thinking hard about some of the things mentioned on the forum A LOT of times like....

Build a List
Don't place all of your eggs in one basket
Don't rely on Google as your only traffic source
and so on....

Since I really want to build an income with little to no risk of losing it, I want to know some of the best things that people can do to help increase the security of online income.

I have my own domains and hosting
I have decided to finally build a genuine list
I am already diversifying my income and will continue to do so
I have finally decided not to focus 90% of my effort on getting Google traffic

Is there something else I am missing because I don't want to have my online income take a sudden drop because of a third party...

Developing an online skill set that will always be useful is a good idea. That way even if your business does suffer from unforeseen problems you can find temporary work to hold you over until you get things back on track.

I think you've covered the main things, right there.

These are all enormously valuable and absolutely fundamental things to do, and can make dramatic differences to the long-term security, value and income of your business.

This has the potential to be one of the most valuable and helpful threads seen here for a while. (Though whenever I think that, they normally fizzle out after only a few posts ).

Ok, well it seems that I am on a better track now. I just wished I had started doing ALL of these things earlier on. Was too chicken and cheap to go about things the right way but now that I know what I know and have been around for a while - It's time to really takes things to a new level and treat this as a REAL online business that I have the most control over. Time to get more education and take back control of my income.

It sounds like you have done well so far. It is never too late to improve your business and believe me, even big offline companies get going and then find out they didn't set up or plan as best as they could.

I would add to really build relationships with people in this and other businesses even if you do not make any money from them.

Why? Because regardless of what happens, you always have your skill set and the relationships you build.

If anything happens, you can start over you might say or re-design yourself for a while with those skills and the help of people who believe in you and your talents.

Always be learning what is new and have a skill in demand and you will never be harmed for any length of time.

    I will add some more:

    1. Open a private limited company which you do your online business with.

    2. Keeping sure your legal documents are in check

    3. Making sure you business is compliant to current regulation and TOS

    4. Giving someone you know very well important data on how to run your biz (have heard enough horror stories about IMers who passed away and their successors knowing nothing about them)

    5. Not doing enough "Next Level" planning on their business
    i. When they are in the "lows'- Not doing anything to bringing it to the peak of the business.
ii. When they are at the peak of the business- not smart enough to save and diversify and then when they go through a low period again (which will definitely happen!)- going out of biz
iii. Comfortable where they are in the middle and stuck in a plateau - and slowly dying afterwards

Good thinking, Suthan. I have one more small one: make sure that your domain registrations and hosting are arranged in two different places.

If you are using adwords to generate yourself the kind of traffic and the kind of income that you have today, you should know that it is very much possible that someday they may slap your ads.

You need to know how to advertise your site if that happens.

There are a lot of ways to promote different products in different niches and doing this will bring you multiple streams of internet income.

Take a look at Ezinearticles. Many people have relied on them for traffic but since Google had decided to slap many of their articles, they decided to give everyone a hard time.

In my opinion, Google is slapping everybody in different ways. That is why I want to have little to do with Google as far as relying on them for traffic (free or paid). I don't use adwords although I am going to use PPC (in general) as a small part of my advertising campaigns soon.

List building, providing value, and going after my target audience as opposed to them coming to me is what I am focusing on now.

        Here are a couple more...

        > Have an exit plan. A lot of people start a business with the same intent as starting a marriage. They intend to be blissfully engaged and active forever. After a few years (or sometimes months) the bloom is off the rose, and that wonderful business is not so wonderful.

[I wouldn't know about that happening in a marriage, though. My wife and I celebrated 30 years as of last month.]

If you know how you can get out (sell the business, pass it on to partners or family members, etc.), it's more like an open cage door. You know you can leave when you're ready, so you spend time working rather than pacing around looking at the outside.

        > Pay yourself. Sock some of your profits into investments that will earn you passive income (and I don't mean Adsense sites or similar). It's a lot easier to take the kind of risks that generate big payoffs if you know you don't need the immediate income to keep food on the table.

How much more confident would you be if you knew you could maintain your lifestyle for a year even if you didn't make money from your business than if you need that affiliate check right now or the house gets cold and dark?
