Facebook business - is this a good idea?

Hi Guys,

I recently got laid off from my day job. In a way this is a good thing because it's forcing me to reevaluate my skills & where I want to go from here. As part of this process, I'm did a checklist of specifically what skills I learned over the years doing online marketing & how I can use this to start a legitimate business that serves a need in my local community. Over the last the last 6 months I've learned so much in regards to Facebook marketing (the light bulb came on so to speak). This morning I searched some local business on Facebook (mostly restaurants & bars). I found that most of them have a very limited FB presents. Most pages had less than 300 fans & by looking at the pages I could tell they were going about some things incorrectly (at least in my opinion). I know I could easily be able to build up a much larger, TARGETED fan list if I was able to run the pages myself.

This leads me to my idea, are there people in the IM word who specialize in running FB pages for other retail businesses? With my idea, I would go on each page twice a day & post relevant content, pictures ect. My goal being to (A) increase the number of fans (B) get the fans to visit the business (and hopefully buy something). I would charge each business a for my time. Now I need a sanity check. Are there people who get paid to do this? If so, what's a reasonable fee to charge a local business?

Thoughts?

Tim

There are a few products were guys are trying to teach you how to do this. I know there was a WSO before about local fanpages.

The main point though is going to get the business to pay you to be their social media expert. From there if you do a good job you can then have good reviews so other business jump on board too.

I'd agree. It will be all about word of mouth. There are plenty of these types of 'consultants' who exist currently to varying degrees of success.

It all depends on what you would charge and what you would offer.

Remember right now everyone sells businesses on getting "likes" instead of getting truly engaged users.

If you have engaged followers on eBay they will look forward to your posts and when you post a business offer they will notice it. But smart people in social marketing know that the 80-20 rule applies. Really 80% plus of what you post needs to be engagement.

Also a facebook page that is ran right can be a great place for people to post their experiences good and bad.

If you can offer them good engagement at a low cost it will make sense to them. But what that price is I just do not know. In fact I would love some feedback on what that number is that number is and how much time you will put into it for that number.

Good ideas. Thanks! This is my philosophy exactly. The cost is one of my major issues. I have no idea what to charge for something like this.

I know some web development. Most of these business already have a website so that isn't the issue. Having a website is great, but if you have no visitors isn't useless. The problem is these businesses don't keep up with there pages & the info they post to there fb pages is a bunch of advertisements. To build a targeted following you need more then the daily drink specials. You need interesting/related content. That way the existing fans comment on the posts & the page grows. I would be changing an hourly rate the time it takes to update the pages.

We are a small business and work with Social media with clients. We do manage and maintain clients pages. These clients were using other services so as we got to know and understand their business we could than offer management of their social media. You can look at our website touchingclients .com and look at the social media packages we offer. We strive to keep our costs at a cost that is affordable for our clients. We also offer custom facebook pages as well...facebook.com/touchingclients Social media especially on facebook is not all about the likes but the conversation and engagement and really following the metrics of the peeps on your page. You can strive to get a lot of "likes" but if you are not getting interaction than you are not showing up in peeps news feed.

When you price out your service you will need to consider industry and realistic expectations of time. Are you going to offer other services?

I really think a good way to look at this is what is your time worth and how much time will you be working on facebook for them? At least for the first few customers you pitch. After that you can figure out what works.

You may be best to roll all your facebook marketing knowledge into a nice little product, "how to make cash for yourself by being a social media manager" !!
Then sell the product with rights to people looking to make money online !! a nice little package in a box, i reckon probably around 90% of people looking to make money online are totally non technical and have no idea on creating anything, not even content, so you provide it, and then sell it to them so they can market it and make money online ! you provide the picks and shovels for the people who are looking for gold, the gold is in supplying the picks and shovels, what you are doing is then offering a money making system in a box, so you are SELLING THE MONEY !! and people will always go for that !!

    All the best,
    Steven

Facebook is great for business but you should not keep all your eggs in one basket, what works today may not work tomorrow. You can be sure that the folk at facebook are watching very closely what is occuring with their site, by all means test the water but if I were you I would look at other icome streams as well...

There are many scripts and techniques out there that will help to force the interaction. But once you get a lot of fans, normal posting is the best type of interaction.

If you can find a way to prove that the fanpage traffic is converting into actual customers - like with a coupon or something - then it may be an easier sell.

With the knowledge that you seem to have, it would make more sense to create a product and focus all your efforts and skills into promoting yourself...
