This dude "tricked" me into a JV

Hey Warriors,

Here is the thing - I'm likely not going to JV with you or promote your product because you send me some crappy "copy & paste" email or PM...

Here is a story of someone who is now my friend and JV partner...

He started out by purchasing a product from me...

He sent me a message saying it was really cool and he liked it and asked if I could use a review video for my sales page...

Little did I know - he had already created it...

So he sends over this video and I'm like - thanks dude...

Some time goes by and he chats with me occasionally always asking "can I help you with anything"...

One day I mentioned having to do some graphics - he said 'let me do it - I've got some time to kill'

So - now this guy has delivered extreme value to me (for a long period) - always trying to help - and doing stuff for me - and I'm starting to feel a little guilty (like I'm using him -even though I know I'm not)

So - one day we are chatting and he was telling me about some of his experiences and boom - I got an idea for a product...

JV Partnership now official...

So - whats the moral of the story?

You want JV partners? You want help from others?

Provide value first - then ask for value in return!

I took notice of his technique and started using it myself and it's working really well for me getting even bigger contacts and making a ton of friends in the process.

So - get off your butt! Go find someone you think is cool and see what you can do to help them! If you help them - most people are going to help you in return.

I think that's how the story goes haha.

I've seen this a lot in the industry and I myself look for people like this all the time because they are just so danged helpful. My entire workforce at 1 point was absolutely free and they provided amazing quality.

Great post ... most people just send off an email or pm, sort of like a cold call. You don't know the person, so how could you make a decision to work with them if you were so inclined.

And usually there is NO time...

But when it's done this way - you feel like you OWE them - and you MAKE time...

Or at least I did lol

Some of my best business partners and now great friends were people I just contacted via "cold call". That works just as well IMO. All you need to do is provide examples of products you've done, sites you've made, etc, and that will give you instant credibility.

Coby's method works fine as well, but if you wait that long you may never get JV partners...

Coby, I learned that lesson years ago just being myself.

I like helping people and noticed that after some time people were there
for me when I needed them just because they knew I would help them.

You can call it the Law of Reciprocity, Karma, Do Unto Others, Magnetic Attraction...?

I call it a fact of life. If you help people with out the intension of receiving something
in return it seems to come back to you in volumes.

Thanks for the reminder. (Not that I had forgotten, it's just a good reminder.)

    Have a Great Day!
    Michael
PS, Hope I didn't go to far OT. Just had to post that.

You hit the nail on the head! It absolutely is good karma!

Excellent points! Yeah most of the marketers online seem to have a mentality like you owe them something. But what goes around comes around! You will always promote something for a friend so it is way better to just start making friends and helping them with things LONG before you start asking for favors!

    Thanks for the reminder!

      Hi Coby,

      Great story.

It shows, how building whatever relationship should happen. Also shows, your partner is a great seller, he knows how to sell himself. You may meet more often with the opposite, unfortunately.

I remember a chinese saying, it goes something like this: 'If you cannot smile, don't open a shop.' When I'm going to go to shop in a chinese store (there are quit a few over here), they welcome me with big smile. So, I believe in the truth of this maxim, though, I'm not a Chinese.

Anyway, I observed, that every people is born with merchant ability. For example, a baby sells herself to you, when she smiles at you. She give her smile to you involuntarily. And you feel, you are sold. You are able to give her everything for her smile.

Of course, due to the conditions, many forget this ability later, as they grow up (at least physically). In other words, if a kid get everything without doing anything in return, s/he don't learns to give. S/he learns to feel themselves entitled to take only. And, s/he becomes this kind of adult.

But, the situation isn't hopeless, I think, because the LIFE is the best teacher. If your mind, eyes and ears are open, you can learn a lot.

      Thank you,

      Sandor

I could not agree with you more Coby. Sadly too many people want to hook the big name JV's and have only just got started.

If you provide value, in the form of genuinely helping these guys, then they will remember you, and thus give you the backup when it comes to launching your product. However, don't just go looking for them to help you launch, or you may end up with no reply in your inbox, and feel deflated.

One of the things I do is to put out a JV and speak to people on skype. You do meet a lot of time wasters but it is a great way to speak to new people.

Very true. Often times it starts out as simple PM then it goes from there to Skype which is where all the magic happens. I can't even count how many friends I have made through just being myself and helping others out. When you take the time nurture your relationships and stead of jumping in and asking for help you see that there is a lot more value than just a one of mailing of your product.

I bought a WP Plugin from a WSO a while back, it's the one and only time I've paid for a WSO.
The plugin didn't work. I started getting 'responder' emails saying he was sorry that the plugin didn't work, it is because something over which he had no control had changed.

I then started getting emails from the same guy trying to sell me other stuff he was affiliated with. Then I got an email saying V2 of his plugin was released and now working, then the day after another email saying whoa...stop, actually it doesn't work yet.
Then more emails from the same guy promoting other stuff that probably doesn't work.

A lesson I learned the hard way that might be helpful. When someone approaches you about a JV and they say that they can deliver/contribute .. make them show you what they say they will deliver/contribute. Sometimes people "think" they can deliver/contribute, but have never actually did it. In my case I trusted in the JV based on the person's background and spent considerable time and money to fulfill my obligation. The other person simply cannot deliver. What a complete waste.

    Good post Coby!
