10 Things I Wish I was Told When I First Started

Hello Warriors!

I have gotten so much out of this forum and although I try to post helpful answers when people ask questions I feel like I have not given enough back. So here is my contribution.

If you are already a self made internet marketing bazzzzillionaire guru, then this probably isn't for you. I was once a fresh newbie and I know how hard it is to get started. The people in this community helped me so much and because of their help my life is completely different for the better. So this is for all the newbies. I'm just trying to pass the help along. So here it is...

10 THINGS I WISH I WAS TOLD WHEN I FIRST STARTED

1) DEVELOP A SUCCESSFUL MINDSET
Developing a successful mindset is the first thing I always tell someone when they are trying to get into internet marketing. If you don't cultivate a strong success oriented mindset, you lower the chances of you being able to push through the hard parts and come out on the other side. Many people will just quit, not knowing how close they were to succeeding. Others may never even start because they've talked themselves out of even trying! So here are a handful of ways that you can develop a successful mindset.

Realize that there is no such thing as failure. There is only results. Either you are succeeding, or you are learning new ways how not to succeed. When you get results other than the ones you wanted, don't think negative thoughts about yourself or what you are doing. Instead figure out what you can change to get results you want. Do not quit until you get the results you want. Keeping these things in mind, over a certain period of time, success is inevitable.

Eliminate your limiting beliefs about money, hard work, and success. These beliefs will cause you more problems than anything outside of yourself ever can. After recognizing and eliminating your limiting beliefs, replace them with empowering ones.

Develop a burning passion. Know what success will mean for your life, and also know what not succeeding will mean.

2) TEST EVERYTHING
You must test every aspect of your sales funnels to make sure that they are converting the optimal amount of viewers into sales.

You need to install Google Analytics. This will let you see at what point your traffic leaves your sales funnel, and how many people click to the next section. Once you have Google Analytics set up what is called A/B testing. This mean on a given page, you change a single variable and split your traffic evenly between the two pages. The one that goes on to the next page of the sales funnel is the one that is converting better.

Don't change more than one thing at a time. If you change more than one thing, you don't know which variable is making the difference. So first you might change the wording in your sales copy, run this for awhile until you have your results and then make the more successful option permanent. Then you might try two different "buy now" buttons.

A/B testing should be done for your ad campaigns, landing/sales pages, and even the price on your payment page. If you have a blog then you should be testing placement and type of ads you're running. Test everything you can think of. You never know what will make the difference in sales. It's good to run a test for at least a week, maybe two. Especially if you still don't have a high amount of traffic. It's easiest to test pages in the order that your traffic will get to them. Ad>Sales Page>Payment Page, etc.

3) BUILD A LIST AND GROW A RELATIONSHIP WITH IT
You should always be capturing email addresses from the traffic to your site. You will hear a lot that the money is in the list. This is very true. With a targeted list of emails, you now have an audience to sell new products to whenever you want, and many of your customers will keep buying from you if you've built a good relationship with them.

To build a good list there are a couple things you can do. First, you can offer a free product to anyone who joins your list. Just set up a website offering the free product and drive traffic to it. You want to make sure that the free product is of high quality and helps them solve a problem. If the product is of an incredibly high value, people on your list will be impressed, and will be more likely to buy your paid products later on. If you're giving away for free such a high value, then they will be curious about how great of value a paid product is. Another good way to build a list is to create a product and upload it to an affiliate site. This doesn't have to be an expensive product, something cheap like $7 for a 20-30 page report will do. Give your affiliates 100% commission for the product and capture the email addresses of anyone who buys. This will build your list slower than the free product method, but you will now have an email of proven buyers, and they will be more likely to buy future products from you.

Once you have people on your list, you need to send them free tips on a regular basis. This will build a strong relationship with them, and will also help when it comes time to sale them a product.

4) DON'T LEAVE MONEY ON THE TABLE
One of the biggest problems that beginning internet marketers don't even know they have is that they leave a lot of money on the table. When someone is buying from you they have already made a decision to give you money. It is possible that this customer may be willing to give you more money, and you need to have options for them to do so.

For every product you sell, you need to have a related, yet more expensive backend product ready for your customer to buy. This product needs to have a much higher value since you will be charging more for it. If you're selling an ebook, your backend product could be audio and video versions that also include more premium information. If you're selling a service like web design then you can sell a premium service where they are getting a lot more site features than the original package. Not everyone will buy the backend product, but some will, and this is money you would not have if you didn't sell anything.

Even when selling your original product, it's a good idea to give bonus products. If you're doing an ebook, then give away a few free reports with it. The value of getting multiple products means you can charge a little more and people will be more likely to buy since they are getting so much for their money.

5) BECOME OR HIRE AN EXPERT SALES COPY WRITER
No matter how amazing your product is, nobody will buy it if your sales copy is terrible. If you can't write good sales copy that converts, then you need to spend some decent money and hire an expert. Trust me, it will pay off in the end. If you want to learn to write it yourself, then keep these important things in mind.

Grab there attention with a good headline. The headline should be relevant and sum up the offer quickly. Mix the problem with the benefit. An example would be "This simple push button software will solve your article writing problems for good!"

Build interest by relating to them. Make them feel like you understand what they are going through. Emphasize that you had the same problem until you found the solution.

Recognize their desires. What do they want? What are they trying to accomplish? Also, what do they want to avoid or get rid of?

Get them to take action. Tell them that you and your product or service is the solution. Use scarcity tactics. Limited quantity/time, price increase, removal of bonuses. This will make them want to buy immediately instead of later.

6) APPLY THE 80/20 RULE
The 80/20 rule is a principle that says most of the results in any situation are determined by a smaller number of causes. In business this can mean things like 80% of your money usually comes from 20% of your customers. So it's important to keep these customers happy first. Give them the most attention and tailor any future products to their needs and desires. The 80/20 rule can be applied in other areas as well.

When working in internet marketing, 20% of the time you spend working is what actually gets 80% of your results. If you focus on more of that kind of work, you should be more productive with your time and end up having greater results.

When dealing with customer issues, 20% of your customers will be causing 80% of your problems and headaches. This can be stressful and time consuming. Figure out a way to help those customers in an automated way by writing FAQ's, or even hiring a help desk to deal with them. If you have any particularly headache inducing customers, it might be beneficial to just drop them as a customer altogether.

7) OUTSOURCE
If there is anything that can help take your business to the next level, it's outsourcing. Paying others to do your grunt work will save you time and energy to focus on more important things. You can get products created faster, and if you have a service based business you will need to outsource if you take on more work than you can handle by yourself.

Let's say you want to write an ebook. Instead record an audio file of you talking about all the ideas in your ebook. Then pay someone to write the ebook for you, using your audio as the first draft. This will save you a lot of time that you can use to be working on a bonus or backend product.

You can hire someone to write sales copy, set up your sales funnel websites, and even run A/B testing for you. If you have a product or service that requires a lot of customer interaction, you can hire a help desk to take care of most of it for you and they can just forward you any of the more complex problems. Hire article writers for any article marketers, and then hire someone else to submit them to directories for you.

Build a working relationship with the workers who have the best performance.

8) BE CREATIVE, NOT COMPETITIVE
If you are working competitively you are spending all your time and energy trying to beat others who are doing the exact same things as you. They are spending all their time and energy trying to beat you. In the end the person who succeeds is the one who has more time and energy. This will leave you drained and stressed and with a very uncertain amount of money.

If you are working creatively you are outside the reach of competitive people. You are making new things that solve your customers problems in a way that no one else has. You are not stressed and drained of energy. You can be confident that your product will make you money and that others aren't selling the exact same thing.

Creating your own unique products and services is the best way to truly succeed in internet marketing. Things like blogging and affiliate marketing can be profitable, but you are constantly competing against many others doing the exact same thing. You're just sharing the money that is out there for any given niche. It's better to create a product that has no competition. Any and all money will go to you, not shared with a competitor.

9) SET UP AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM
So you have created your own products. You need to remember that you are only selling to a limited audience. If you want to greatly multiply your sales, you need to set up an affiliate program for your product.

There are countless sites to do this on. Clickbank is a very popular one. After you've ran a successful product launch through your email list, go to one of these sites and put your product on there. Generally my rule is to offer 75% commission for any product that costs less than $200 and 50% commission for any product that costs more than $200. This may seem like a lot, but with such high commissions you will attract more affiliates and also the bigger affiliates who have massive email lists.

You can also hire an affiliate broker who will personally contact top affiliates and try to get them to join your program for a big launch. If you do a big launch like this, make sure to have FAQ's written about your product, and hire a help desk to deal with any customer issues. Also test to make sure sales page and payment page are working properly. You want everything to go smoothly so that you can minimize refunds.

If you are doing a big affiliate product launch, offer contest prizes to the top sellers.

10) HAVE A BACKUP TO PAYPAL
There are a lot of horror stories of people having their paypal accounts put on a temporary hold. This can be because of many reasons, but it usually comes down to paypal seeing something you're doing as a possible risk and they just want to protect themselves. It may happen if you all of the sudden have a large amount of money coming in compared to your normal activity. Or it can happen if you have an high percentages of refunds request.

To minimize this happening, it's a good idea to always leave a good amount of money in your paypal account. Paypal sees this as less risk because that money can cover any problems that may arise. Also, have a second bank account not tied to paypal. Move your money to this second account and paypal can't touch it.

In the case that you do get a hold on your account, have other pay services set up so that you can quickly change to one of them in an emergency. It's best to have two or three difference options for accepting payments, especially if you are making a lot of sales.

.....

So there you have it. 10 tips that should be able to help a lot of you who are just starting out and maybe it was even a nice refresher for some of you veterans.

If anyone wants to add any tips that they think are important please feel free to add to it or expand on any of the ones you see here.

Keep up the good fight, warriors!

Haha, yeah that's a good point. The great thing about the warrior forum is that there is SO much great information here for free.

Of course with that I'll have to add "Don't get stuck reading for six months." People just need to read enough to get the fundamentals and then get started right away. You always learn faster by doing instead of reading, even if you don't succeed right away. Of course I still do a lot of reading, but I limit myself to how much per day so that I can spend more time doing what's really important.

Same here. It would be nice to be able to just do EVERYTHING right straight out of the gate, but that's rarely the case, right? Haha. Although, I'm sure I learned a lot of lessons better simply because I had to learn them the hard way. Failure is the best teacher!

Carol, thanks for the kind words! It's making me happy to see how many people I'm helping.

As for your clickbank question, let me see if I can help.

Whenever I want to do a big successful launch I will usually do TWO launches. A mini launch with my own personal list, and then a larger launch through an affiliate program such as clickbank.

If you don't have a list in that niche yet, I would start building that list right away. If you do a search on list building you should find a lot of great info that goes into much more detail than what I have written above.

Anyway, if you have a list and have already built a good relationship with it then I would start hyping up your product to them. Mention that you have a new product coming that you're really excited about and let them know when you are planning on launching (two days, that weekend, next monday, etc). Also drop a hint at what the product is and what problem it is going to solve for them.

Now make sure you have an excellent sales page. If you need to, hire a sales copy writer. You want to make sure your mini list launch has a high conversion rate.

On the day of the launch, send out an email saying something like, "The product I've been talking about and you have all been waiting for will be available in two hours" (or some small amount of time). If you hype it up right you will literally have people waiting for it to become available so you get a large amount of sales right at the beginning.

Finally send out one final email when the product is ready with a link to the sales page.

Now from here, wait a day or two and see how the conversion is doing. If you conversion is low test your sales copy, site design etc. Maximize your conversion. If your refund rate is high and you have a lot of bad feedback with your product, you may need to start over from scratch. That's okay if that happens, it's how we learn.

BUT, if you have a high conversion rate, happy customers, and a low refund rate then it's time to move on to the next step.

You need to start attracting affiliates, and you want to try and attract affiliates with LARGE email lists. A good way to do this is to go to have an JV broker do this for you. A JV broker will have all the contacts for you and they can take your product to their contacts to see if they would be interested in selling it. That's why it's important to show that you had high conversions with your own list and that your refund rate is low. If you meet these criteria affiliates will be very happy to sell it to their lists, and some of them have lists in the hundreds of thousands. It's not uncommon. Of course if you don't want to go with a JV broker you can do this yourself. But it will take some networking and that might be hard if people haven't worked with you before.

I recommend giving your affiliates 2-3 months. This will give them time to prepare. Possibly hype it up to their list for the big product launch date, but also because they are usually quite busy and may not be ready for your launch if you do it to fast.

On the day of the launch make sure everything is working perfectly. All links, all pages in your funnel, etc.

My rule for affiliate commissions is they get 75% if your product cost less than $200, 50% if the product is over $200. Don't be greedy and try and pay a low commission. You will attract more affiliates and much BIGGER affiliates if you have a high commission rate. This means a lot more money for you.

For your BIG launch day, make sure to have a more expensive backend product. With that many sales coming in you could easily DOUBLE your money if you have a high end coaching program or something else of that nature to sell. Plus, on a backend product it's 100% profit, you don't pay affiliate commisions on those.

Make sure to capture EVERY buyers email address and put them on a buyer's list. A buyers list is gold and should be treated as such. Take care of those customers and they will thank you again and again by buying future products.

I hope that all helped! I'm actually working on a large product right now. It's going to be a video series where I show people step by step in great detail how I build a list, create a product for that list, launch the product, and then later do a big launch how I just described. Of course warriors will get a huge discount and anyone on my list will be first to hear about it!

Good luck with your launch! I wish you much success, and if you have anymore questions just let me know.

The 80/20 rule has helped me SO much. I think I first heard about it when reading Tim Ferriss' Four Hour Work Week. If you haven't read it then I highly recommend it. I forget to apply it as much as I should, but when I do it just makes everything so much easier.

Good luck with your next project!

The other part of this is that the tasks that are the most important are often the ones that you do not like doing.

When left to their own devices people usually choose the more pleasant tasks first. As these are often the less essential tasks you can easily fill a day with work (80%) but leave all the important tasks (20%) undone.

Prioritizing on the important tasks first can skyrocket your productivity and genuinely make the difference between success and failure.

I am convinced this is the one single reason that many people spend years (seemingly working very hard) trying to make money but never succeeding.

Great use of the 80/20 rule Tony! I was actually reading just yesterday tips on dealing with procrastination (no matter how disciplined I get it's an ongoing struggle, haha). In the tips one of the things that was mentioned is that first thing you should always do when you start working is the most difficult task of the day. Just get it out of the way when you're refreshed and full of energy. This will make your day seem so much easier. If you procrastinate on a difficult task it will just sit there looming over you and the pressure will most likely have you putting it off longer and longer.

Also, I notice that many times the task isn't nearly as difficult as we perceive it. In our own minds we makes things seem much more difficult simply through the act of putting it off.

Put off an easy task and it seems like a hard task. Put off a hard task and it seems impossible.

That's a good top 10 list there Steve - gained from
    experience over time.

I agree that all the points are useful yet most IMers
learn them at different stages of their career.

For example, outsourcing is a great strategy but you
need to know what, how and when to outsource to
make the best use of it - and that comes from
    experience.

Nevertheless, you've outlined a good top ten list to focus
on to shorten the learning curve and make faster progress
    as an Internet Marketer.

Shaun, I couldn't agree more. You bring up a good point and I probably should have made that more clear. I think anyone new to internet marketing should start out doing everything themselves. This is how they learn what works, what doesn't work, and how to PERFECT the things that do work. That way when they DO decide to outsource, they will know exactly what to tell their worker to do and how to do it properly.

      Thanks for the valuable input!

Hi Zack! If you are distracted and can't focus, it's really hard to get anything important done. I myself am NOT a good multi-tasker. It's just something I've come to accept about myself. So to be more efficient I have to focus on one thing at a time and try to ignore everything else. The second I try and do two or three things at the same time, everything falls apart for me. Haha.

10 out of 10 though the outsourcing is something I do very little over. It really
        depends on what it is.

As for the PayPal backup, it's not the best (Clickbank) but it is one nevertheless.
I guess they can always pull the plug on me too. But at this stage of my life
as a marketer (semi retired) if they shut me down, I'd just go sell everything
        and be done with it.

In fact, I'm seriously considering selling all my domains, products, everything
to somebody who wants the headaches. I honestly don't anymore.

But great list and yes, something everybody should take to heart.

Thanks Tom. Yeah the second I realized the truth of the saying "the money is in the list" it was like a light bulb finally turned on. Starting to build a list was the definite turning point for me. I couldn't imagine being where I am now without it.

I hear what you saying. I used to have a problem where I had to have EVERYTHING just right before I took action. I had to have the perfect plan, and have all my preliminary work ready to go. Because I was too strict about trying to be organized, it took forever for me to actually do anything! I would over analyze everything instead of just getting started!

It was a case of "staying busy so I feel productive but not actually produce anything."

But once I actually started working on a project, I realized most of the silly things I planned for weren't even necessary. I added so many extra steps that just made everything take longer, and the end result wasn't any better. It just took longer to get there.

I think it's better to just get started, and not worry about being organized or "ready". If you wait for everything to be perfect, you'll just keep putting things off because perfect will never happen.

So my advice is to just go for it, head on. Dive right in, make a mess, and do all of the organizing on the other side where you can actually see what you need to organize.

I personally have not had a horrible experience with paypal. The one time I had a small problem and my account had a limitation put on it I was able to call them up and get it straightened out that day. They were very helpful and polite.

BUT, I have heard the horror stories and I know how common they are. So the paypal backup is super important in my opinion. You don't want to wait until something happens because you may not be able to set up an alternative right away.

Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

    Nice post OP.

In all honesty I believe your second point to be the most valuable.

    Test Everything!
This one point alone is what took me from $150 per week from a fully automated microsite to $800 per week from the same site - and - all I changed was the opening paragraph of a whole 3 sentences!

I am a big believer in scientifically approaching everything - it is the only way to gain "true knowledge" of anything IMHO.

So, one day in March last year I decided to start split testing different elements on my sites - I'd already succeeded in crafting up a successfull formula which earned me money on literally everything I tried (thank God I was blessed with that naturally) - but it was only when I honestly said to myself: "there *could* be something better, which you haven't thought of or do not know" and I began to split-test my pages that my sales went to new levels.

Ironically I found that in certain niches the capital was mined using scarcity and urgentcy tactics and in others it was humbleness that gained the sales.

Anyway to conclude, listen to what the OP has said - I know from expirience that those ten rules (if you like) are golden, and so long as you work to apply them to the best of your ability; I have no doubt that you will find success online.

    Regards,

Arty, great example of successful split testing. You're so right about how different niches respond to different tactics. Even two different groups in the SAME niche can respond to completely different things. That's why testing is crucial. No matter how much you think you know, or how good you think you are at writing sales copy, one simple split test can be very humbling. Haha.

Yeah like I was discussing with someone else up there, outsourcing is the one that you want to make sure you know what you're doing before you really start putting a lot of money into or else you could end up losing a lot. But, once people start making some money on a solid method, outsourcing can save them a lot of time and headaches so I wanted to still mention it.

              Steve,

That's really a good point outsourcing saves lot of time and hardwork. During this time you can work on (outline) new product.

Hi Monika! Thanks for the kind words!

Yes, in a way I guess we are all newbies at something. Every day I try and learn something new or how to make something I already know better. Someone who thinks they have it all figured out is definitely setting themselves up for failure. If we try and remind ourselves every day that we don't know everything, then we won't be as hard on ourselves when we make a mistake, and mistakes happen no matter how long you've been doing this.

I love the 'be creative' and not competitive idea....the Internet is huge enough for us all to help out one another.

I've been marketing online now for 14+ years and methinks the biggest thing I wish I had known 'way back then was to build me list!

If only I had done that in 2004 when I broke the Google code....but hindsight, of course, is 20/20. Live and learn!

Also another thing I've discovered is not matter how easy things might be, some people refuse to give themselves permission to be "smart" enough to tackle them. And I'm talking simple things, like clicking on a page, seeing the File Not Found error, reading the "We have redesigned our site, please use the search bar"....and then contacting me for help finding said page.

Without even trying the search I might add (that just happened to me this morning).

    So I'd add:

Give yourself permission to attempt *anything*.

'cause you'll never know unless you try.

    Great thread!

List building is definitely the easiest and fastest way to make money in my opinion. Also it's good to remember that if you treat your list right, you will have repeat customers over and over. Deliver great value on one product and they will gladly buy the next product as well.

Hi Ron! Although it may seem hard to put things into action, I find that once you really get started it seems much easier. We build things up and make them seem much more difficult in our own heads. If you break things down into smaller, easy to deal with problems and start solving them one at a time everything because much more manageable.

I agree that the list is incomplete. I don't think a list like this could EVER be complete. I'm sure in a year I wish there was something else I wish I could go back to right now and tell me. Haha. Just the nature of it!

As for it not being a simple matter, I'm going to have to disagree. Although things can SEEM complicated sometimes and incredibly difficult, it is what we make of it. That's why developing a successful mindset is number one. I think it's easily the most important part, and a lot of people don't spend enough time on it. Most of the the time failure comes down to mindset. With the right mindset failure ceases to exist, instead you just have obstacles.

Where there is a will there is a way.

    Love this, some great advice...

I would single out # 3 Building a list and #9 Having an affiliate program

Building a list should be the first thing every marketer does as it is key to having a long-term 'real' business, you cant have a business without customers.

Then you need to create your own product and build your brand and recruit affiliates to promote the heck out of it for you. Another important feature in having a real business- having others working for you for mutual gain.

I would add one more tip, to have joined the warrior forum earlier and gotten a lot of pointers for free instead of spending so much on products in the early days

Honestly list building, product creation, and launching my products both to my list and through affiliate programs is 95% of what I do in IM. It's what has made me the most money and it's what I recommend to everyone else. At this time I rarely sell other people's products.

I've recently found some good success making other people successful via a 100% affiliate commission site I run - I populate it with great quality PLR, my affiliates get the money and I get the leads. I knew about this model 2 years ago but didn't really make it fly back then...doing much better now.

I'll also be adding my own WSOs to it too.

Wow that's a great idea, running your own 100% affiliate commission site to capture leads. I like using 100% commissions to capture leads through other affiliate sites but I've never thought of starting my own affiliate site specifically for that purpose. Learn something new everyday! Good job!

No not necessarily. These tips aren't really a step by step, just some things that can help if you're still new to IM. You don't really need to setup an affiliate program until you've created your first product. I do however recommend having a backup to paypal before you start selling anything.

Hi Andy! As far as I'm concerned mindset is the most important thing to work on. Everything else is just methods and tools, but mindset effects everything in life, not just IM. It's an ongoing thing as well. I work on it every day. I often catch myself being negative about things and have to remind myself about the state of mind that I SHOULD be in.

Good luck and hope to see you around here more too!

Steve, this is a great thread and I'm with you all the way on product creation!

This is absolutely not just for 'newbies' as it's reminded me of one or two things I'd really rather not think about...precisely those things I'm going to tackle first thing tomorrow morning rather than spending hours fiddling with the more fun but less profitable stuff...

No problem Steve! You're right, so many people focus how many people they get on their list, but really all it comes to how well your list converts when you try to sell them things. The best way to get a highly responsive list is 1) targeted list building strategies and 2) building a great relationship with them. If you deliver high quality content to your list for FREE on a regular basis, then when you have something to sell they will be VERY interested.

I wish I had started that young! Good for you! Glad my list was helpful. As for people helping you, I just wanted to let you know that there are some great coaching programs out there. You'll have to pay up front but if their coaching is any good it should be a lot cheaper than splitting your profits. Also if you need help learning how to make a little quick money online so that you can pay for something like coaching, there is a lot good free info on this forum.

I found out much later the true meaning of "the money is in the list" this simple phrase is actually a business model in itself. Its range is almost limitless and hard to really grasp and utilize when you're a newbie.

If you don't know the true meaning of this, you're doing yourself a dis-service!

True, but an oversimplification. The money is in your relationship with the people on your list, and your ability to elicit money from them. You can have a huge list, but if you have no, or a poor, relationship with them, or you haven't the right sort of prospects on it, there will sadly be little money in your list.

    Good top ten list.

Although I'd say that my all time #1 "wish" as something I would've REALLY wanted to know (in retrospect) is this:

Your Traffic & Income Are Completely Dependent on the MARKET Itself. Not Just Your Marketing.

Change your market = change your entire experience.

A lot of people don't realize this.

There's niches where it takes years to build a list of 2,000 subs. There's niches where you can do that in a weekend (organically).

Same goes for sales and revenue.

It's the biggest, overlooked "secret" in this industry.

    Very good. I would add:

There is no easy road so quit buying all the expensive software that promises to do everything for you.

This is a business, treat it as such.

I would tell any newbies not on here to join the Warrior Forum and for all newbies on here, I would say, join the War Room.

Never buy anything that has a limited time to get it. Wait. Think about it and see the results others are getting. Most scams show up in a few weeks. And most one time offers ARE NOT one time offers.

Market research and keyword research is the most important step because if you get in a highly competitive market or get keywords that don't get traffic or are too competitive, you are already done before you even get started.

Do the research and set yourself up in a better position to win before you ever buy a domain name or create a blog.

Focus, focus, focus and one method, one process and one niche until you are making money.

Once you get one down, you can do it over and over again with other niches.

    Lots more, too. :-)

While keyword research can be very important for SEO, I personally don't worry much about it. Maybe I should more, but in my experience when you're focused on being creative instead of competitive, things like SEO/article marketing/etc aren't as important. I drive a lot of direct traffic as opposed to organic traffic, so maybe that's one reason I don't need to worry as much about it.

I focus more on list building and product creation.

I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me, and the way I do things aren't for everyone. I say do what works for you. I just personally don't like all the tedious work that comes with SEO. If I ever need stuff like that done, I outsource it. It frees up more of my time to work on stuff I find more important.

This is true. I barely make any money in the MMO niche, the majority of my focus is in other niches. I honestly don't have a higher post count because I spend more of my time working and less time on here. It would be too easy for me to be sucked in and distracted if I was on here all the time. Warrior Forum can be addicting, I wouldn't get anything done! Haha.

Mate this couldn't be more true. The silly thing is when I started I would have thought 'ah yeah, I've got most of those things sorted'. But the truth is that I never did, I only thought so.

    7) OUTSOURCE
This is the biggest. I'm only just learning this now. You could even afford to pay full time guys without making any money off the web, relying only on your 'normal' job. Wish I did this much sooner.

    8) BE CREATIVE, NOT COMPETITIVE
Try competing with the best spinner It doesn't even matter if your product is better when the competition has thousands of affiliates, let alone users. New ideas are the winners, but these are hard to come by.

    10) HAVE A BACKUP TO PAYPAL
Oh my god yes. We had a massive Paypal dilemma when they shut down our account without warning and customers couldn't give us the money that they wanted to give us! I am one of about seven zillion horror stories. I didn't even make that number up...

I was lucky enough to have the desire to be creative pretty early on. I knew I wanted to create my own products. Because of this I have avoided a lot of the competition traps that a lot of newbies find themselves in.

As for outsourcing, I waited too long before trying it out. I wish I had started outsourcing earlier. It makes so many things easier. But like it was stated earlier, for some of the REALLY new guys, hold off on outsourcing until you know what you're doing. You might end up spending a lot more than you need to and not get what you want.

I haven't had a giant paypal problem yet, just a minor hiccup. But I hear enough of the stories that I have two backups. You never know and it's always better to be safe than sorry, especially when your business is on the line.

Great post. My problem was that I was told alot of that stuff but I just didn't take heed. I thought I could get by without building a list, setting up an affiliate program etc.

I did of course 'get by' and even made enough to quit my job and go full time online. It was only when I started doing those things that I pushed past the income barrier and started earning more than I'd ever thought possible.

If I'd listened more I'd probably be have gotten alot further alot faster

Hi Hamida! That's how I was. I tended to just "get by" at first. It wasn't until I started listening to the people who have already made it that I was able to take it to the next level.

For anyone reading this who just started in IM, pay attention to the people already making a lot of money. It's easier to model yourself off of someone than it is to figure stuff out for yourself the hard way.

Thank you Steve for taking this much effort to help out the newbies. When I started the biggest mistake that I've ever made (along with thousands of others) was to try out a variety of different money making tactics at once. I'd spread myself so thin that it was impossible to monitor what was actually working and was absolutely ineffective.

According to me Focus and Persistence is a must to make money online.
