Why Are ".tv" Domains So Expensive?

I just purchased a ".tv" domain (ErnieMitchell.tv) from godaddy.

It was $34.99!

Does anyone know why are .tv domains are so expensive?

I think that is the official TLD for Tuvalu and they charge that much simply to make $$$. For many (most ?) countries you need some sort of presence in order to buy domains with their TLD but some don't care. I used to buy .jp domains and back then they were $75 and you had to buy them through a third party.

Simply because TV stands for TELEVISION. .tv domains are popular because they are associated with media, celebrities and television industry.

I guess back then the price was higher than what is now, so you are lucky my friend.

Yes, I think too that they are quite costly when you compare them to a .com I am sure it is just for the money - to make a profit. They hope that the TV stations will get them and use them and pay the higher amount.

      ^^^^ This, exactly.

The Tuvalu government is a co-owner of the company that licenses these domains, and they're still a significant contributor to the island's economy.

If you think they're expensive now, you should have seen the prices a few years ago when they were selling them mostly to TV shows and companies who advertise on TV. They've been getting cheaper all the time.

It's just one of those countries whose national domain extension "looks like something with another meaning" (not unlike .co for Colombia and .me for Montenegro) so they can ask more for them.

The first .me domain-name I ever registered cost me about $30, as I remember, but I notice they're under $5 at Namecheap, now. (You might want to check .tv's there, too!). The same might eventually happen with the .tv ones, too: their prices are certainly more likely to go down than up.

Actually the only reason they cost what they do is...

...because people will pay that much.

So, by buying the domain at that price--a price you knew ahead of time--you are actually contributing to the prices staying that high. Thanks.

Nothing for you to complain about as the price was disclosed to you and you still bought it.

    All the best,
    Michael

I'm not complaining --- I was just curious.

Fair enough. Apologies if I came across the wrong way.

It comes down to the price being whatever the market can bear, and that's about it.

This is domain name extension for media and entertainment. There are lots of competitions therefore more reason to sell this expensively.

Yes they are damn expensive lol
It is because they are mostly related to celebrities, tv channels, or video sites. These are often large companies who are willing to pay more for the domain.

I really don't understand that either. For me .tv is not any different from .net or stuff- and i don't buy them.

The only TLD that I will be complaining is IF they raise the price of .com :-)
