If you've ever bought one of my products, then you will recognize this message. I send it 1 day after someone buys any of my products.

Hey {!firstname}

Have you gotten a chance to dive into the [freebie you gave them]?

I want to make sure you get the absolute most from this business
model I've shared. It's extremely powerful... and pretty simple
too.

Before I start sending you more great content to help you build
onto the [freebie gift], I need to ask you a question...

What is it you would like me to teach you?

I don't like to dilly dally on what content to send you. I only
want to deliver content that {!firstname} wants. That's why I'm asking
you right now.

Your help makes my products and my emails the best they can be. I
would be so appreciative for the help.

Just hit reply now and tell me what it is you want.

Thanks. I will be in touch soon,

[Your Name]

I take the replies and create my next product. These products have generated over $50k for me this year. $15k of this from October alone... so I only expect November and December to be even better. I suggest you use something similar and listen to your audience...

75% of the people that send you a reply will thank you for appreciating them. That's how you gain someone's trust!

Oooo nice! I generally just direct folks to a DagonDesign contact form where they can tell me what they want....but I can see how a simple "ask and ye shall receive" message would be even more effective.

I'm getting ready to send out my Friday's newsletter...I think I'll try your suggestion and see how it works!

    Thanks muchly!

If you reply to their emails directly, you instantly have someone who is more than likely going to buy your next promotion too.. even if it's not a product on the reply they gave.

Asking people what they would actually like to buy. You'd think that would be a no-brainer, but how many 'marketers' don't get that. Nice work.

Nice email and asking questions is definitely one of the easiest and smartest ways to do product research. There's no need to guess what your customers want - just ask them and they will tell you.

Having said that I would probably change this line of the email:

I don't like to dilly dally on what content to send you. I only
want to deliver content that {!firstname} wants. That's why I'm asking
    you right now.
I don't like how you have used their firstname in there. You are jumping from 1st person to 3rd person which sounds a bit wrong. That line would be much better as something like:

I don't like to dilly dally on what content I send you. I only
want to deliver content that you REALLY need. So here's your
chance, let me know exactly how I can help you.

I am actually testing this out. This version of the email just happens to be the latest one I've written. I test 1 aspect each product launch to see what gets the best response.

This launch I was testing the {firstname} inside the post. Kind of like I'm talking directly to that person. It does change 1st to 3rd... but that's to give them the feeling of this email is written only for them.

I'm still testing it out. I would normally write something very similar to what you suggested.

Anything that will get the message opened. If this is being sent to people who have just purchased then maybe something simple like:

      "About your purchase...."

      Travis,

I understand you are testing using personaliztion or no personalization but that wasn't my point. You want an email to feel as though it has been written only to that person. At the beginning of the email you addressed the person by their name and then later on in the email you referred to that same person in the 3rd person. It doesn't make sense and creates an immediate disconnect.

    Great follow up email!

Just to add to it you can send a line which says something like "I will base forthcoming emails on your requests" will make them read all the emails that you send in the coming weeks as well. Also, if you insert a line at the end of every few emails to thank them for their suggestions that would be even more effective in strengthening the relationship.

    Ok, feedback time...

I did this yesterday and used a subject "[my product]...permission to bribe you for feedback?" I added an extra freebie (a mindmap) and sent your email above with a few slight mods for my situation and 50% of the list got back to me...with ESSAYS! They told me exactly what they thought and what they wanted and in some cases what they were willing to spend as well (!). Many started off with "Hey Bill, great hearing from you!" or "thanks for asking Bill, most people just send rubbish" or "Hello Bill, I would love to learn to..."

What a great thread! Thanks Travis (and Will)!

    Here's my modified email...

Hi [first name] , this is Bill Stacy from [my URL]. (<-- I did this so they knew exactly where I was from straight off the bat - I also added an extra space accidentally before the first comma - watch little things like that as they are often a giveaway of a form letter. Also names spelled with lowercase first letters are a giveaway, with smaller lists I suggest editing the list so you can give everyone a capital first letter to their name. With bigger lists it can backfire if you use a lower case first name firt letter.)

I just want to touch base with you and ask...

[I went with the double bribe and extra gift - my addition]

Did you know there were two? By the way did you notice I attached

      Bill,

That email sounds great and it's no accident you are getting a great response from it. I'm gathering from your post you just sent this out as a broadcast email to your whole list? I think this would work really well in the first week or two of an autoresponder sequence.

Inviting any type of 2 way interaction immediately separates you from 99% of all the other marketers out there. People like people who are willing to listen to their problems. Too often as marketers we always think we need to tell people the way it is. Sometimes sitting back and letting them tell you their problems and questions is not only going to make them trust you more but you'll also end up with some great ammunition for future products.

I remember this was a technique one of the famous marketers used years ago. When testing out a niche, instead of having a product created from scratch and trying to guess what his audience wanted, he would first put up a squeeze page offering a free bribe in return for their thoughts, questions, and concerns.

If he was able to get a lot of detailed responses then he knew this was a market worth pursuing.... and you know what the product was? Yes, it was basically made up by answering all the most common questions people had submitted. You then go back to that list of people who have told you exactly what they want to know and sell them the solution you have just created for them.

It doesn't get much easier than that.

Good post - and a great idea for those who don't do it to start doing it.

I also add in a follow up in the auto sequence 2 weeks after purchase to make sure that they are HAPPY with their purchase, and to hit reply with any "questions or areas of concern".

The most important thing that you HAVE TO DO is then REPLY to them. Not just from the first letter as the OP says, but ANY TIME your customers contact you.

Sometimes I'll get a question to my support desk, and even though the support desk is working on it, I'll still send a personal email to the customer to let them know I'm personally involved also.

I just got one back a few moments ago and it was also an essay (which I loved!) but included some cool comments like...

Ever since I started telling my list they can actually reply to the emails I sent out, I definitely increased sales for sure.

Now this email... this is something else! This would make me feel like I HAVE to reply, even if its just to thank them for actually caring.

I don't think this specific email would be as helpful low ticket items like I sell currently, but it would definitely have a massive positive effect on higher ticket products and services!

    Thanks for this awesome nugget!

This method can definitely work against you if used incorrectly. I would not suggest doing this as a broadcast email to your list if it's a decent size. You want to be able to respond to each and every reply you get otherwise it defeats the purpose. I would only insert this as part of a follow up sequence so you can respond to everyone OR only send it to small sections of your list at any one time.

Unfortunately you are going to have some busy days ahead of you otherwise those who responded will get the impression their response has gone unheard or was not important enough to warrant a personal response from you.

I don't agree with what was written in the post above. You don't ask people for feedback and then when they give it to you, you tell them you are too busy to read it. Not a very good relationship builder.

@stevenjacobs: send a blast to the 3k that reads something like the following:
I have gotten your email and appreciate the time you have taken. Right now I am tied up with a few things that will prevent me from replying to you in depth, but I promise that some time over the next few days I will sit down and write a more detailed reply. I promise! Just hang in there

PS - This concept has been around for a while. I have seen it spelled out on a number of sites, I think including naomi dunford's and that 4 hour work week guy.

The way to make the most cash from this technique is to reply to every single person - that makes them a customer for life.

@alex hilton: I would not bother with the survey until after you have built a separate list of just these peeps. Once you establish the two way communication they will be more likely to do whatever you ask. The first time through you will turn people off. It turns into more of a "do something for me because I am sending out a bogus attempt at appreciation" instead of the "let me pay attention to you as an individual."

    Travis,

    Thanks for a great share!

I 'reluctantly' attended a 2-day Amway Convention some 20 years ago after a co-worker 'insisted' that I entertain his offer to attend this event with him and his family. I sincerely believe his continuance of saying;"How may I be of service to you?" -played a huge role in my decision.

Subconsciously, the above question inspired me to 'accept' his offer, built a silent trust, and by attending that convention... both Zim (the co-worker), and Zig Ziglar will always be a huge inspiration in feeding my entrepreneurial hunger.

Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure to formally "thank" either of them.

There is definitely a power in 'asking' others what they need? want? or desire?

Thanks for the template... I'll definitely give it a go!!!

    All the Best,

    Art

PS - ...and might I add Zim whom we called; "Jim" was from India and I was long-haired Caucasian teenager back then, so it crossed cultural barriers, and despite my apprehension, that meeting changed my life forever!

That's awesome Travis, great template too. There are quite a few marketers already using this technique. I just got this email from Robert Plank today:

Charles, can you hit the reply button really fast and type me a one sentence response telling me why you're not yet making as much money as you want online?

Just one sentence will do it. Be specific, but limit it to one sentence.

Thanks and I'm looking forward to your reply.
Not nearly as nice as yours but the same idea...

This concept has been around for a while.
The first public mention of it that I'm sure of was at a conference in Texas, in 2002. I'm not sure if I included it in any of my products before that.

It's usually used as a "touch point," to show that you're a real person, and that you actually read and answer email. The trick is to answer every single email you get in response to that note in your sequence. In 10+ years of using that technique, that's one rule I don't think I've ever broken.

Travis' example is a killer, especially for a product follow-up. He's handed you an easy way to add to your income if you use follow-up autoresponders in your marketing.

Some nice adaptations here, too. Bill's, especially with the notations, is really good. If I might add a suggestion... If you have a LinkedIn profile, make sure you add that to the signature. In some markets, or if you're a regular networker, I'd recommend that instead of Facebook or Twitter.

Add those to later emails, if you like. Make the LinkedIn contact the first social networking link they see.

I have never seen an FUA sequence that didn't see significantly improved response after adding this kind of note, even when the sender didn't reply to the emails it generated. If you do reply, the improvement is noticeably larger.

It's a "warm" contact in a cold medium.

I've been using it since I first got started in politics - at the age of 21. (no I'm not admitting how many years ago that was, lets just say I won my first election 17 years ago!)

There really isn't anything new in marketing - all that really changes is the medium used to contact people.

To see the woman's response really edifies the 'power' of the psychology used in this method.

I'll get to work on dusting off my LinkedIn profile and add it.

I used personal touch to great effect in IT Support (sending an email asking if the solution was permanent) and some earlier stock market stuff I did and in every case no matter what the context, telling people that you are real and want to help as quickly and efficiently as possible helps.

The "quickly hit reply and send me a sentence" is a great idea. Might even make a great subject line.

By the way, I just checked and I got a 60% open rate on that email and even though this is a new and still small list (only dozens, not hundreds or thousands yet) I'm very happy with it and I expect to get more responses...in fact (I kid you not), one came in as I was typing this sentence...lol classic.

Personal touch? It works. The internet is like this big black silent dark space that we all walk around silently. Add some real human interaction and you'll get better results than if you don't. I've known this from the first time I was told but this thread has helped me do something about it and look, instant positive results.

Edit: When replying, I only sign off as "Bill", not my full regalia signature and I don't start a reply with "Hi" either. I get straight into it just like a real life conversation. Sometimes I'll even start a reply by saying "...not only that but..." because that's how a real conversation goes. Descend into casual tones as soon as possible.

    Bill,
The "quickly hit reply and send me a sentence" is a great idea.
Robert Plank uses this to great effect. He overdoes it for my tastes, but I'm not typical in that regard.

I used that line at the end of a rather long newsletter issue, many years ago. Something like "If you're still reading, you're a more patient soul than I. Please take a moment to hit reply and send, just to let me know you got this far." 3000 subscribers at the time. Over 600 responses, many of them including testimonials.

The thing that makes it work is actually doing something with the feedback.

    REALLY good points.

Anyone who's traded emails with me will know that I don't use a signature in personal email at all. Haven't for a very long time.

There are people who'll say that's not the best idea, and they may be right for some circumstances. You may want to leave the signature in, especially if it includes links to profiles on social sites.

Test it. If you find that a significant chunk of new contacts connect with you on those sites, it's probably a good thing to include it. Those links aren't likely to trigger the "sales resistance" reflex.

You will quickly notice you get a lot of the same responses or questions especially when you have targeted your traffic well enough.

I like to put together a Master F.A.Q. I have an outsourcer answer all emails that have questions in the FAQ. The rest of the emails are left in my inbox for me to answer... then I add them to the FAQ once I answer them.

I do quite a bit of niche marketing in a wide variety of markets. I have 1 outsourcer who will answer 95% of my emails from all the niches. She has a FAQ for each niche.

It's a decent system that I had to put into play after I started waking up to huge amounts of emails every monring. If I didn't do this now, I would probably be answering emails 8 hours a day.

I did this last night and was expecting some response just judging from this thread so I timed it and I kid you not, the first response hit my inbox in less than 5 minutes. The lady was super grateful and willing to listen to anything I said. She seemed very happy and excited that someone finally took some time to listen to her and is willing to help.

I get the feeling that she is trying to "make it" in this business and feel alone with little direction. I think my email doing nothing but asking her what she needed help with actually motivated her.

It is a good feeling to have made someone that happy/excited....

    Hi Travis,

Thank you for sharing this great email template. It is a good reminder to ask the subscribers the problems that they are facing so that I will know the kind of product that I can promote to them.

I think another reason it works well is because it will show the subscribers that the person sending the email is a real people and he is interested to know the problems that the subscribers are facing. Great way to get feedback and building good relationships with the subscribers.

good post, however you're not really making any sense...

You start by saying you send this to customers 1 day later, then in the email you refer to 'freebie'.... and more freebie gifts...

are you referring to a bonus they were given when they purchased?

is this email sent out to prospects who just opted in?

I send this 1 day after anyone is added to any of my lists. The "freebie" in the email was just an example of what you could put if you are using this right after opt in to prospect autoresponder.

The actual email in the OP is from 1 day after someone purchases a product. In place of [freebie], you would put your product name.

It all works the same way. You give them something... then you ask them how you can help them use it better.

For anyone that has been using this - do you actually create products based on those suggestions?

And do you have any numbers regarding ROI for products that were based on subscriber suggestions vs. products you came up with and sold (or vs. promoting random affiliate products for that matter)?

The reason I ask is that this is the kind of thing sounds good and sounds "right" to a lot of people. And it is likely fine for bonding with your list.

But actually putting it into play? I know some who have tested this and claim the ROI is actually quite a bit less than promoting affiliate products or creating products with no input.

Say that sentence out loud and listen to what you just said.... there is very rarely a time that you will have a better ROI with no input than with even a little input.

Of course the ROI is better, I'm giving the people that are reading and opening my emails exactly what they are asking for.... not what I think they need...

How do you know? Have you tested this or are you assuming? Can you accurately predict how many sales a product with input will have vs. one without? Is a product with input guaranteed to be a success vs. one without?

Again, that's something sounds good and many will think it must be true. But have you tested it? The people I'm talking about have tested - they aren't making assumptions based on something that "sounds right."

Basically, do you make more money creating products based on subscriber input vs. just creating "what you think they need" or random affiliate products? Or do you just think you do? Do you now for sure? How?

Remember, I'm not saying you are right or wrong. I'm just wondering have you tested. Saying "of course the ROI is better" means nothing unless you have tested.

Yes, I have tested it. That's why I know it's produced results. That's why I know it has produced $50k for me this year. That's why I posted this in the first place.

The guys you have talked to, like I said, aren't listening to their audience if their results were worse than thinking of something off the top of their head. It's common sense following this method would end in better results.

The tests show sending this email produces a higher response rate from every single email you send from that point on. By a lot too, not just 1-2%.

Meaning more clicks, more conversions, more sales...

Ask your friends how exactly they tested it out. Did they just launch two products... one off the top of their head, and one from feedback... then record the total revenue?

Making the most out of this method takes using the feedback you receive and create an entire sales funnel out of what they want. So, you don't just create a single front end product... you give them a pre-launch series, a front end product, a back end product to help more, and a few buyer's follow up series all directed towards this one topic at varying levels.

Tell your friends to test again.

I do a very similar thing with the 1st email out the gate of my newsletter, I really like the tone in yours though - I'm going to add one similar to yours once folks are 4/5 emails into the autoresponder.

I don't get a lot of responses but the ones I get are very interesting.

I find responses I get drive blog content, then when I get the same question, I redirect folks to the relevant post like you do with the FAQ.

It's also a good way to refer people to my YouTube vids as well.

The big strength of this approach is that it is personal - and people love that!

So this thread has brought up a few points.

I wouldn't send people to a survey site - that takes away the personal touch, and will blunt the impact a lot.

If you get a ton of responses that you can't reply to quickly then do send an "out of office" auto response - telling people that the response has been overwhelming, and you will reply as soon as you can, but meanwhile you just wanted to let them know you have got their message and will get back to them soon.

Then it is important to actually get back to people!

    Hope that helps
