Preventing out of country orders

Our website is done with WordPress. It says clearly on the Order Now page that we do not ship outside of Canada. Yesterday I got an order from someone in Hungary! I had to refund his money and of course PayPal takes their commission on that refund, so it costs me to refund money.

Is there a way to set up WordPress and/or PayPal to stop out of Canada orders? I dont like having to pay to refund someone their money because they didnt read out site clearly, and I dont like people being disappointed in not being able to buy our product, so I'd like to stop them before they get started.

Thanks,
Funkynassau

Doesn't your order page have any options for countries? You could add in your order form a country option and if they choose other countries than Canada, they cannot proceed or finalize the order.

You can block other countries right through PayPal. Go to your risk management filters, under selling tools, and you can block any countries you want to.

Our order form says clearly at the top of the page that we dont ship outside of Canada. In two yrs we have had two US orders and now this Hungarian one...so it's not frequent but I'd love it to stop.

Thank you Tina! I hope that does the job!

Actually, when you issue a refund through PayPal, their fees are credited back to your account, so those canceled sales shouldn't cost you any money. (At least that's how it works with U.S. accounts, but I doubt it's different there.)

Where your customers enter their shipping address, does it say Canada there?

As above, it suprised me that you've had fees taken from you if the transaction was cancelled and refunded.

If you haven't used the services of PayPal to benefit you i.e receiving funds, then you essentially owe them nothing. The rules reflect this - or at least they should.

I ended up calling PayPal about this and for Canadians the options are different in your biz preference settings, than what the US version offers. The best I could do was set my account to not accept any order that does not come to me in Canadian currency. Now the Hungarian guy I refunded did pay in Canadian dollars, so his order would not have been stopped. Very strange way to do things.

I did ask if it costs me money to issue a refund and the guy said it's 30 cents. Not a big deal, of course, but why the hell should it cost me anything?

So we'll see how this works!

Not from my perspective. Quite a long time ago, PayPal introduced cancellation/refund fees, in fact we received a notification from them when they were first implemented. And yes, I am in the US.

Your order page should have options for countries. You can change it on your paypal account.

Sheila, it seems to be different in Canada than in the US and other countries. I cant pick which countries I will deal with, I can only select to not accept currency that is not Canadian. The paypal customer service guy told me this.
