What Are Your Top 5 Free Traffic Generation Strategies and Why ?

Hi everyone...

For those of you whom are also thinking about how to drive traffic - this question must be mother of all questions and most widely confusing and hardest to get it right for most people !

I read some where online before that one should not focus on a dozen or 2 dozen traffic generation strategies, but should focus on just maybe 3-5, correct me if I am wrong for those that have experience generating free traffic.

Now, it appears that different people choose different traffic generation strategies that you may not be comfortable with.

So it appears to me that one does not have to follow anyone specific model if not comfortable but what is important as a point of reference to all here, is that one sticks to just a few and become good at those few, please correct me if I am wrong again and why ?

So what are the free traffic strategies I should consider in order of priority from 1 to 5 and why ?

In the beginning of promoting a new website, or blog.

    1. Article marketing
    2. Blog commenting
    3. Press Releases
    4. Forum posting
    5. Video marketing

    What I Do

    1. I do not do article marketing ( too time consuming I save my content for my blogs )

    2. I do comment on blogs periodically. Benefits = traffic, and a backlink

    3. Forum posting = Warriorforum as an example it's my niche ( internet marketing ) that is where a lot of my potential customers are.

    4. Video marketing - Best substitute for article marketing I make video tutorials. Benefits = free, tons of traffic when done correctly, video's can be shared for even more backlinks.

    5. Building an email list from my free traffic - Most important step of them all. When you update your blog you can tell your subscribers your blog is updated with a link to your posts this equals More free traffic.

Building an email list is building a real business because it is an asset that you control.

Affiliates - because it's high converting long term and consistent traffic

Joint venture Partners- because it's high converting and they can send you a serious amount of traffic in a short period of time before it dies off.

PPC - because it's super quick to test out an offer and see if it's going to be profitable or not

Direct mail - because you can rent out a list of buyers people who just bought something and they will be highly likely to buy your offer. You won't get a lot of traffic but it will convert sales very high, especially high end offers.

Buying Banners on competitors thank you pages- again you won't get a lot of traffic but it's buyer traffic which will convert really high.

    1. Forum posting. Don't spam, actually take part in conversations. Try to both post in threads and make new threads so you can become better known.

    2. Article submission. I submit all of my articles to EZA, some to hubpages, and some to squidoo. I get good traffic from them, and my EZA articles do get syndicated from time to time.

    3. Social Bookmarking. Submitting things to Digg and Reddit have really seemed to help. This works best when you have a website on a subject that is entertaining or social.

    4. Video marketing. I love using Youtube videos of my articles. I turn every article into both a podcast and a video.

    5. Guest blogging. When you find a popular blog in your niche, start out with some comments, make sure they are good. After a bit, you can contact them about doing a guest blog post. This can get you a nice boost in traffic.

1). Article syndication. Submitting articles to online/offline niche network partners. (This pays for all other promotions - and then some )

2). Ezine solo ads, media buying.

3). Offline advertising, including postcards, magazines, newspapers, press releases.

      4). Telemarketing.

5). Networking at tradeshows, seminars, events, Starbucks.

    1. Forums - Backlinks are short wins on forums. The real value is in growing your reputation and authority amongst your peers within a given subject. Get to know people and create relationships not just links. I create content on my sites and use forums to confirm that it is valid / "epic" - only then will I try and promote that piece - houses on good foundations etc...

    2. Social Media - Each industry will have different ways to harness social media - find the best way within yours and leverage it.

    3. Good old fashioned SEO - Yes, seriously it still works

    4. Articles - If you are knoweldgable about something then you might as well utilise it in the best places. No spinning, No duplication - Aim for approval not links

    5. Video Marketing - very useful if done in the right way. I need to do more of this

This is my first post here. So, here goes!
1.) Social Media - Primarily Pinterest and Facebook pages to a smaller degree.
2.) Forum posting and blog comments
3.) Again.. Comments and posts. even though it isn't in my niche. My forum signatures have links, My profile on various forums have my websites and social media profiles/pages in them. Make sure to fill all of your social media and forum profiles with data. This helps get people to click and view your websites.

Not 5, but some useful info that helps me.

Blog commenting has worked well for me. Try to be the first comment so more people will see it.

Facebook group posts. Engage in groups that are in your niche and every so often throw in a link (non salesy pitch) for your site. First build credibility with a few solid posts.

Interacting in forums in your niche can also be a great method.

Along with #2 you can hit up G+ communities and LinkedIn groups depending on your product.

    1. Facebook page for my niche - from existing fans and paying for FB ads.
    2. BingAds (to a much smaller degree)
    3. Pinterest (much smaller degree)
    4. Social media/email Swaps with colleagues in my niche.
My focus is Facebook though because of viral nature and extremely low cost for generating a ton of traffic. Fans = traffic. Invest in FB ads for profitable posts.

Definitely stick to few master them and then move on to new traffic sources..
I tried from Search Engine traffic and failed badly then i went to Pinterest, it took me some time, like i consumed 5 - 10 months, testing every bit of it, searching, experimenting and in the end yes i got success, now i can pull 2-3k UV's on daily basis
After that i went back to search engine and this time i got success, maybe i was more confident in trying new things because my previous project went so well,
So now i am pulling like 5-8k UV's on daily basis
I have websites covering different niches, recipes, Quotes, Humor, Travel
My traffic sources remain in order of traffic received
    1: Search Engine
    2: Pinterest
    3: Facebook
    4: Forums
    5: Email lists
