I wouldn't recommend any of the e-commerce plugins for WP if you're serious about doing real business. Too many security vulnerabilities. But if you have to this one is very popular: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-e-commerce

That's a pretty generic statement that misses the mark completely...

Of course you might think its true if you relied only on plugins listed on wordpress and only on plugins that use wordpress as the platform all inclusively which would introduce a lot of potential problems.

1. There are strategies, tools, and techniques for securing wordpress.
2. Where wordpress plugin creators miss the mark is they try and do everything inside of wordpress including the ecommerce automation which is completely unecessary.
3. What you need is a plugin that works with a strong external (third party) ecommerce solution and just handles the account creation and mangement part.

Then all you have to worry about is the normal stuff for securing your wordpress blog.

I researched a LOT of wordpress membership plugins. I don't think any of them comes close to wishlist member. the support is excellent also.

I own James's product and it is another great WP security project.

If you use the right membership plugin the theme you choose should not matter. All you really need is to add the login widget to the front page or a link to the login page.

In my mind simpler is better... you want only the plugin or theme that gives you the look and functions you want without any extra bloat. Best would be a great look with very little else fancy so that you can avoid conflicts and problems.

With our plugin development the approach was to mimick the <more> tag in wordpress by creating a "member lock more" tag that allows publishers to make some posts or portions of posts public and other posts or portions of posts private. The plugin limits registration at the blog so that it can only be done through our external system which can process free or ecommerce related account orders. Our plugin also censors the public feed so that preview content is delivered but not premium content that must be viewed in the blog.

By taking this simplified approach we are able to provide publishers the benefit of our comprehensive business automation, affiliatemangement, and ecommerce system... while keeping our plugin simple so as to limit conflicts with themes.

So to clarify...

The theme that you choose that will work the best for you will likely depend on the WP membership plugin you choose. Some may come with their own theme or others like ours may be designed to be as compatible as possible with the widest array of themes and plugins so that they can all play nicely.

In other words you need to test the theme you choose with the membership plugin you choose to make sure there are not conflicts. You also need to test other plugins you may want to use on your system as well to make sure there are no conflicts. They just are not all guaranteed to play nicely with eachother.
