Normal Amazon conversion rate?

Hello WF'ers,

I've recently started trying Amazon Associates program because I heard good things about it. I created a site in a niche using ProReview theme and the main keyword is ranked for #6, #8, #9 in Google, Yahoo, Bing respectively. I get a couple clicks a day from the website and in the past 2 weeks have had 40 clicks but 0 conversions. Is this normal? I've heard the conversion rate was much higher.

The links are all 4+ stars, 20+ reviews, brand name product, etc. However, they are between $200-$400.

Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

Thank you so much!

    Hey Bizzie

You need WAAAAY more traffic before you can determine your conversion rate.

40 clicks really is nothing and you should be focusing on driving traffic to your pages and building up those clicks.

Conversion rates will be determined by many things but a 5% conversion would be average so that means for every 100 Amazon visits you would get 5 sales.

What is the monthly search traffic for Google for your products ?

Remember the top 3 spots get 80% of all the traffic and that is where you need to be, so you need to start back linking your pages and ensuring your on page SEO is 100% to increase your chances of moving up on Google but 6th spot is excellent for such a new site.

You need to start other traffic methods to drive traffic to your site especially if your keywords are not getting enough monthly searches.

You can do this a variety of ways such as Article writing, guest blogging, press releases, to name just a few.

Gaz gave you some good advise but I would disagree that 5% is an average conversion rate. I've been marketing stuff online for over 10 years and in my experience there really is no such thing as an average conversion rate. At least not a number that is meaningful in any way. Conversion rates depend on so many variables - traffic source, preselling, landing pages, sales process, the product or service in question, etc. etc. so there just really isn't any average conversion rate. I know some sites that have a 5% conversion rate and they are losing money, and on the other hand I know of sites with a 5% conversion rate making millions. There just is no one size fits all answer to these kinds of questions ...

Your exactly right and as mentioned there are many things which will determine the conversion rate and my 5% is just rough estimate, some Amazon Affiliates on WF say they get 3% some 7% and some others claim 12% and higher but as mentioned above it will depend on many variables.

Yep, traffic is key - also the higher ticket items do not normally sell as frequently in my experience.

The key is finding out HOW people are viewing your sites and if you are on Google and ranking well you need to find out what keywords they are finding you under.

Install Statcounter.com, it's free and you will be able to see what phrases people are picking you up on.

Then focus on getting more traffic...

Remember also that not EVERY product will be a winner but if you keep on going you will find the gold nuggets in there...

As others have said, there is no average conversion rate.

Over the years, I've had conversion rates ranging from 0% to just under 27%.

The 27% rate was for a two month promotion of a hot holiday item using PPC to get very targeted traffic.

On cold Google traffic, conversions are all over the board, including seasonal variations where nothing else has changed but the calendar...

  • You are doing something WRONG.

You are building sites then hopeing people will buy something. You haven't figured out WHY they buy or WHO they are... All you have done is find a few keywords that people use to search for items.

400 clicks and no sale is no different than 40 clicks and no sale.

You need to figure out who your customers are, what they do, what they want, where they go, why they buy, then go back and Read everything in the Amazon Help files.

Conversions is more than a number game.

    Good luck.

It all depends on your keywords bizzie.

If you are selling a certain brand of shoe and you are ranking for another brand of shoe, then your conversion rate would be low...

This is an extreme example, but in most cases your keyword may not be buyer-orientated enough or your sales page may not be focused enough.

For example "Adidas Elite Series Best Price" would have a higher conversion rate than "Adidas Elite Series Photos"...

When I did a lot of Amazon stuff I got around 5-7%. I started out getting around 2% but after I put a lot of effort into targeting keywords where the searchers were in "buy mode" those numbers went up.

Don't stress about your conversion rate until you have some bigger numbers to base it from.

For some reason it actually took me about 500 clicks before my first sale. Since then I've averaged about 7% conversion across all my sites, so don't worry too much yet. Just focus on bringing the traffic in for now.

If you get to 1000 clicks and no sales then it's probably time to start looking at why you're not converting.

The interesting thing is that there is no proof here, so whatever anyone says about conversion rates is pretty much fluff lol. Just keep tweaking your websites until you get a suitable rate and see the conversion rates for yourself. Cheers

Even if posters (me included) could provide proof, it still would not mean much. Like the investment folks say, past results are not a guarantee of future performance...

In my Amazon.com associates account conversion for this month is 18.42% so far. I promote mainly via stores which generally have a higher (as they are already added to basket and going to checkout) but don't have as many "clicks" as other methods.

I've been doing amazon for a couple of months now and have had some success around $300 commission this month.

I was wondering if there is anyone out there that would be willing to critique one of my sites and share any advise or things that I may be missing. In return I would be willing to do the same for one of your sites and share any tips that I've learned.

    Thanks,

    Hi,
It would depends on the product you promote. Some products won't convert at all.. some will have crazy conversion.

I had an amazon site on a certain product and receives tons of click daily, with almost no conversion. Turns out my visitors are mostly children.

I have 4 sites in different niches each with carefully integrates amazon products, selected to match the theme exactly. So far I've had over 1200 clicks through to amazon without a single sale.

It sounds like you are catching people at the wrong time during the process (if your visitors are even in the buying process).

      Conversion: 0.37%

So conversion was very very low on this one. Have others with 2-3%, but sending 46K clicks only to get 170 sales is not a good sign.

The site is build around a general category and gets desent traffic from Google.
That's pretty bad. Maybe you should try and improve your content and pre-sell your visitors a bit better.

Even doing some split testing wouldn't take long with so much traffic coming in.

I do most of my work in the higher-priced electronics categories. My conversions usually hover around 3%-5%. Since my sites generate upwards of $25 per commission (average), I'm very happy with that.

Gaz is right. 40 clicks is way too small a sample to draw any conclusions from.

Another thing to keep in mind is the keywords that you're visitors are finding your site through. In the early stages after launching a website the majority of the traffic can often come from longtail keywords that aren't really 'buyer keywords' and this can throw your conversion rate off.

With my first site I sent 500 clicks through to Amazon before making my first sale. That site now earns just under $500 every month and has a conversion rate of about 8%. It's on track to make more than $700 this month.

So be patient and hang in there. Just keep doing what you're doing and re-assess things once you have a bigger sample (500-1000 clicks).

Write articles and submit to reputed article directories on the Internet. This is one way of improving traffic to your website and also bringing about conversions. As a previous member has pointed out 40 visits per day is a good way to go. All the best.

I agree with the others about conversion rates will depend on how you get your traffic and product type. Having said that.. you ask for a normal Amazon conversion rate.. if you have a bunch of different niches, with different layouts, ad designs, conversion tricks, using different traffic methods, etc then you can look at the whole sheebang just to get a feeling of where you are.

      I run at 4-5% on a all-site mashup average.

Q3 2011 was 6.9% (higher than my normal average due to 1 site really doing great - tweaked it too much - now beyond repair =0)
      Q4 2011 was 4.8%
      Q1 2012 was 4.5%
      Q2 2011 so far is a bit over 5%

Anything over 4% feels just fine for me considering almost all of my traffic is organic.
My main products are all mainstream stuff people buy all the time. All sites 100% unique content with adequate amount of pre-sell angles.

For some reason my conversion rate has been poor in the last week. So far this month its only 2.63%. Usually its over 4%.

I think it's somehow related to the Panda update. Has anyone else seen a reduction in their conversion rate in the last 1-2 weeks?
