Honest, lets cut the crap, theres a lot of it that gets passed around in internet marketing. What do you think is the biggest lie that is still being told, and what can we do to stop the spread of mis-information and help more people become successful?

Yup. I see this all the time on Safelists and on landing pages galore. If you aren't actually selling a real, live product or service...it's a scam. And even then, you aren't going to make "X AMOUNT of DOLLARS GUARANTEED."

100% agree with this. I think the majority of Internet Marketers operate with integrity. There is dishonesty everywhere, online and offline, you can't blame it all on Internet Marketers. Some buyers are dishonest too.

It actually might not be a lie. It's not so much "dishonest", but the sneaky crap that gets me. For example,

      1. FREE Trial offers that never end. You get automatically signed up to a continuity program.
      2. You buy a Clickbank program, but require 100 upsell products to actually make it work.
      3. The numbers in the headlines like "make $230,000 in 48 hours" - yeah it's possible, but get real, how many of us can do million dollar launches
      4. Promises of riches and when you don't succeed, it's blamed on your lack of effort and poor converting offer, when in reality the product is CRAP!
      5. too many to list.....

The earning potential of most GRQ with 3 clicks software!!!

All those guys that get involved with each other in a JV deal give the industry a really bad name. I mean, they get a product that they allegedly had made and are allegedly earning a fortune from....... they promote it with a video with photos of "one of their click bank accounts", add a few testimonials, don't actually tell you what the product is and then expect you to pay 3 times the cost of the original product for an upsell.

Ok, then. Please answer me this. If your product is sooooo good, why are you now, 3 days later, via your list that im on, promoting another GRQ scheme, rather than supporting the product you put out in the first place?

I have a rule which i think has saved me a lot of money. If ive ever bought one piece of software from an Internet Marketer and they they have promoted to me another software in an email, i go and get a refund for the software i bought in the first place.

Anyway, have learnt lots of lessons from some great people and soon i shall be repaying the community for their help.

      All the best

I think the biggest lie on the internet is where you come across an add that says only "X" amount of people can be sold this item. Then you come back in a week and "X" has not changed.

A close second to this are the guys that claim they can hit their mouse a certain number of times, then go away from their computer for a few hours, and after those few hours are over they can come back and find they have earned thousands of commissions on clickbank or whatever.

If anyone out there has a system that works like I've described, PLEASE send me a private message. I am looking for you!

The biggest LIE in Internet Marketing is that "you can
get big results, very quickly with little or no effort."

Take a look at Clickbank, the WSO section etc., to find a
large number of people willing to sell products that make
that outrageous claim - and no shortage of fools willing to
believe and buy into it too.

The REALITY is that to succeed at ANYTHING, you need
to sow before you can reap (and sometimes that means
a LOT of sowing before you can reap anything - let alone
      a BIG harvest).

All of the successful Internet Marketers that I know have
worked their arses off - and many continue to do so.

As the saying goes, the only place where success comes
BEFORE work is in the dictionary.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

One of the biggest lies out there is that any given market is "saturated" or that there's no room for a new player.

Remember, you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy.

In most market places mediocrity abounds, so one of the more effective ways to compete in any market place is to simply do better than the next competitor. There are a lot of lazy entrepreneurs out there and oftentimes you can beat them by simply working harder.

Work a little smarter and you can become an unstoppable marketing juggernaut.

      "Anyone can do it"

Put 100 random folks in a room and choose who can build a profitable business online. Gov't stats say 4 of the 100 will. Sure, any of the 100 could be among the four. But the reality is . . . the 4 that will emerge won't be those that:

      - do nothing, or
      - study, study, study, study, study, or
      - buy a money-making course and never take action, or
      - jump from one strategy to the next without focus, or
      - fall for the push-button without work promise, or
      - try to be all things to all consumers, or
      - continuously buy IM products without applying IM strategies, or
      - succumb to the "shiney object" syndrome, or
      - fail to pay attention to customer service, or
      - figure "good enough" is good enough, or
      - trust in the business owner is not important,
      - employ "if you build it, they will come," or
      - countless other self-defeating behaviors that Warrior Forum members have been cautioning you about for years and years.

That business on the internet is somehow different from business everywhere else.

What truly separates the professionals from the hobbyists isn't some particular skill or even some particular mindset. It is the simple understanding that business is business, and all the stuff that works offline works online, too.

Similarly, all the stuff that works online works offline. If you can sell people on a link with an email, you can sell them on a mail-in offer with a postcard. If you can get clients over Skype, you can get clients over the telephone. If you can give a webinar, you can do a live presentation.

It's that simple little understanding that makes the biggest difference. It's all the same kind of business. Nothing has really changed.

There's a "biggest lie" in most professions. It's up to you to be able to determine if what is being sold is a lie or the truth.

When I see something that touts YOU CAN MAKE $296,395 IN ONE MONTH ON AUTO PILOT! I know better.

The IM business is similar to many other businesses.

When a car salesman sells a car for the most money possible, it's up to the buyer to know the actual value of the car, the marks up, and the art of negotiation. And the car salesman just might lie to you.

When a lawyer tells you he can win your civil lawsuit with a $5,000 retainer and he/she anticipates the case might cost $10,000, it's up to you to decide if the lawsuit is worth it. This scenario could very well result in a cost that exceeds your initial damages.

When your car breaks down and you know it is a simple repair, cost should not exceed X amount, but the auto body shop finds just a few more things wrong, why they just might be lying to you.

Disclaimer: This post was in no way meant to disparage car salesmen, auto body shops and/or lawyers. And most importantly, internet marketers.

It depends on what niche you focus.

    For MMO, it would be:

This Program Forces You To Accept Money The Hordes of Slavering Customers Insist On Flinging At You!

    For dog-training, it would be:

This Program Makes Transforms Your Dog Into Rin Tin Tin 3 Seconds After Purchasing!

    For coffee-making, it would be:

ALCHEMY! This Product Changes Tap Water Into Gourmet Fresh-Brewed Coffee 6 Seconds After I Cash Your Check!

    In other words....

The biggest lie is anything that, well, lies. Doesn't matter the niche, doesn't matter the customer base.

What I really hate are the "zero effort/reside on beach!" lies one sees, plus the faked earnings. I have an article about that someplace called False Profits...hang on....

Take it from someone who has spent hundreds on WSO "bumps", eventually it is important...essential...to begin developing and cultivating your own means of driving traffic to your WSOs. Unfortunately, it's really quite unreasonable, with all the competition, to expect to make tons and tons of sales off of the back of "bumps" alone.

The truth is, it WILL slip...and, sometimes, it'll slip really quite quickly. The real winners in the WSO game know when to bump, but they also have cultivated other means of driving high quality, targeted, traffic to those WSOs.

Of course, everything requires work...but, it requires "smart" work.

That it is easy. People buy into the dream of easy money.

If you want a home based business it is great. If you make moderate income you should be able to replace it with ease in a few months. But just like any business to make it successful you have to put time and/or money into it to get to the level of replacing a middle to high income.

I'm a longtime successful internet marketer, fulltime since the 90s.

The biggest misrepresentation out there is from the pitchfest IM seminars and "big" $1997 product launches and other content out there, about applicability of techniques shown to "anyone's" list.

A guru saying "I made $50,000 with this new listbuilding technique" or whatever is completely misleading, because the LISTS are completely different across merchants, and as my colleague the late Corey Rudl used to teach, the list IS your business.

So some guru talking about making a lot from their launches, (because they have big lists and affiliate-incentivize their colleagues to cross-promote to their lists) does NOT translate into, you can also be successful with your (sub 10k size) list.

And techniques taught by a lot of 'gurus' are not even directly scalable to smaller size, for a variety of reasons (like long-term publicity value of the guru, vs "you and your list, and you're not famous") makes a huge difference.

The biggest lie is that the techniques taught to you guys are replicable largely across lists. The RELATIONSHIP you have and Market POSITIONING and branding and LIST SIZE WITH QUALIFIED PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU (not Just list size, I routinely delete thousands of leads from India etc who don't buy, from my email accounts) are all much more important than specific techniques or WP themes or whatever you're using. Seems a lot of IMers, especially newbies, focus way too much energy on "technique-y" stuff (like a shiney WP theme or video player) vs your positioning as expert and long term relationship for multiple sales, credibility, expertise and positioning (that can THEN be leveraged via product/service launches that are aff driven).

      -k

Bonus tip: your wealth is not so much in your list (only), it's MORE about the 2nd, 3rd, 4th sale you make to your best customers whom you've EARNED the TRUST of over time, who buy repeatedly from you because you've worked very hard to genuinely help them. If you "get" that, you have a shot at becoming successful. That's why I'm against affiliate-only marketing etc, as it's becoming an undifferentiated sales rep, vs personal positioning and trust-building.

I think the expectations put upon new marketers.

They (and by they I mean me ) end up with dollar signs in their eyes and when they only make $100 or add 50 subscribers to their list in a week they see it as failure rather than the first step towards success.

I agree. I think the biggest lie in Internet Marketing is believing that you are going to make money without first offering value. With as lot of people, it's all ME, ME, ME. I don't believe it's really possible to make money in IM until you change that mindset from ME to YOU.

Offer great value up front and the money will come. Keep on with that ME, ME, ME and you'll still be chasing your tail for years to come. It took me six months to realise this, that's when I started to make money online.

    Biggest lie in Internet Marketing?

Hmmm...There are so many to choose from...I think probably the best one would be...

Google. Google is the biggest lie in Internet Marketing.

Why? Because Google tells the most lies to the most people. It's to the point where you literally can not take anything they say, especially to the SEO community (aka: spam community if you ask Google), as fact.

Recent example? How about the news that Google's going to be hiding keyword data from webmasters 'for the sake of privacy', but still going to collect all the same information on their end, and they'll still give it to you IF you're a paying advertiser.

Of course, 'We want more privacy' sounds a lot better than 'we want more money', so there you have it. Just one example.

Obviously I still make a good chunk of my money from SEO, so it's hypocritical for me to complain about them. I guess you can call me a hypocrite then. But to be fair when I market my websites I'm not looking for Google traffic, it just comes naturally.

I see that a lot of other people are talking about the 'Magic Income Claims' as being the biggest lie...And yea, I guess I can see that. But come one people. Just don't believe it when someone says you'll earn 5 figures in a week.

To me the 'Magic Income Claims' is just the same lie told over and over...It's easy to see through, but not if you're desperate. Google lies in ways that are much more subtle and difficult to detect, and they lie to the entire world, not just desperate folks looking for quick cash.

I guess this could be said of any big company, but there aren't that many other big corporations that we in the IM community have to deal with. So that's my gripe.

Anyways, hope my ramble wasn't too boring.

    Other 'big lie'/misconception:

    a) IM = must have affiliates. From 1999-2006 I had no affiliates and did very well. Only recently I'm starting to experiment with jvs and affiliate promotions. The truth is that if you add genuine value to a list that you've earned the trust of, you can make a successful business. And you do not have to get a bunch of affiliates to cross promote you to spammy namesqueeze pages; I've seen that and have found that often the 'free webinar chasers' that opt in are low-quality leads that don't buy anyways.

So don't overvalue affiliates. Endless cross pitches for newly launched products (a la 'circle jerk' approach that gurus and wannabes use) fatigues lists and they don't buy, over time.

Also note gurus just want to build their lists from 'scraping' leads from you affs, at your expense, which is bad to do, via 'send your online business to my squeeze page and you can potentially earn big commisshes'. Beware first-cookie aff pgms since their buddies who have larger lists will get aff credit not you. Use "send your order number in to get my (your) bonus" to track aff purchases and you'll see the shrinkage.

    On the positive note:

+ Any teaching that shows you HOW to produce Better QUALITY Content, is good... so in years past I bought books on how to write, produce video, creative thinking and other content-focused training. Books are inexpensive, including those by world-class authors. I've never bought a $1997 product in my life (and never will). I've never spent more than 1k on any IM product, and the best of those (like copywriting courses) are all focused on content creation.

+ Like any small business, if you're not willing or able to work 12+ hour days for years on end, to actually help people with high-quality content -- you won't make it, for the long haul.

What amazing input guys! Its good we have the warrior forum to keep us all together and protect each other from losing our hard earned dollars.

Ive seen some amazing posts, some angry posts, but overall, these are some really excellent ideas you've all put forward.

Now the question is, what can we do to help new people entering the field from being taken by less than ethical marketers -- and help to point them to marketers who are going to nurture them into successful entreprenuers?

How can we continue to dispell mis-information to accelerate everyones success in marketing? I believe unrealistic ideas such as making $10,000 tommorrow without ever having tried internet marketing are the types of things that prevent people from eventually achieving their financial goals. Unrealistic initial expectations lead to dissapointment and frustration.

Disclaimer -- Before tearing into me, im not saying most marketers are unethical, im saying that there is a lot of hyped up claims that give people unrealistic expectations of making $8,000,000 next month and I dont think its fair to do that to people. Lets help them and show them the full picture instead of trying to win through trickery and deciet. Even if they are telling the truth in the salesletter they are creating these false images in the customers mind of what they can expect to achieve -- and when that happens we have a tremendous amount of customers who are going away trying to make $10,000 tommorrow without a list, product, or anything.

I dont think its the best way to help people.

If we first educate people on the process they will probably go through, or the process most people go through before experiencing success... such as needing to learn about marketing, traffic generation, its application, etc... perhaps more people would be successful and the online economy as a whole would grow and prosper even more?

I think that customers are people who are entrusted into your care, and its your responsibility to take care of them, and to help them prosper. To do everything you can to enrich the lives of the people who do business with you. And in exchange they offer you value in monetary form.

At the end of the day, no one sits on their death bed thinking of how many people they made money off of, but they do think of how many people they helped - and how many lives they touched.

    What do you think?

I'll probably get zinged for my post but I'll still give you my honest opinion.

I think a lot of new people make the mistake of not thinking of online marketing as an online BUSINESS.

They don't realize that they will need to develop business skills like budgeting (cashflow and future expenses), accounting (for tax purposes), marketing, interviewing (for hiring potential outsourcing help, support desk, or virtual assistants), and countless more skills.

Lacking or refusing to develop these needed skills means they are a strong candidate to fail at their business... unless they PAY someone else to do handle those parts of the business for them.

Lacking any skills early on doesn't mean you can't succeed. You can fill that void using either time or money... time to learn the skill so you can do it yourself or money to pay someone else to do it for you.

But the biggest skill to develop in any type of business (both offline and online) is a B.S. detector. There's countless things pitched to you everyday and not all of them work as advertised.

Quick sidebar: Before anyone zings me and professional copywriters as a collective bunch (which includes me), please realize that 99.9% of copywriters are very wary of writing copy for anything that could rip the general public and will NOT do it. The other point many don't realize is that copywriters, along with their clients, became liable in the eyes of the FTC if they DO write something that defrauds the general public. So I always turn down any "risky" projects and so do every other copywriter that I personally know.

Okay, back to countless things to buy.

Great example... when I owned my massage therapy center, a guy came in to sell me advertising on gas pump handles. Of course, once you were actually HOLDING the gas pump handle to fill your fuel tank, you couldn't see the ad but he still thought I needed to buy it (I didn't).

Most people don't use everything they buy. Doesn't matter if it's ebooks, shoes, DVDs, physical books... everybody has something sitting on their hard drive or house that is untouched and they've been meaning to "get to sometime real soon"... even me.

I have stacks of books in my office that are future reading and even more digital ones on my hard drive that are gathering "digital dust".

Since my primary business is professional copywriting, the majority of the materials I read & review are client-related which is a major time filler.

Because I don't need to add more "stuff" to my "getting to sometime real soon" piles, I rarely buy any new educational stuff unless I'm going to use it right away. Buying only what training materials I'm going to use right away has made my businesses more profitable and increased my productivity even more because I'm more focused on what I need to be focused on.

The reality is owning a business is rarely easy. If it was, then everyone would own their own business and no one would be an employee or work for someone else. Of course, if you have customers or clients, then you are still working for someone else.

Anyways, to borrow a line from Dennis Miller... "That's my opinion... I could be wrong."

      Take care,

      Mike

P.S. Probably 50-60% of the successful online business owners I know started out offering a service online like graphic design, copywriting, programming, etc. They took some of the monies they earned from their service business and used it to help build their own online business. Another 20% or so, worked a "day job" while building their online business. The day job took care of their monthly living expenses, the online business was their after-hours passion. Day job or freelancing... either way, it's a proven path to success but it still takes a lot of time to build a business in size and scale.

But on the real tip - my vote goes to any variations on "Internet Marketing is easy".

There are outliers for sure but FOR ME and for what I suspect is the majority of people who did it, IM has been grueling just about every step of the way and even now, doing relatively well, it still kicks my ass (and lights a wicked fire under it) on the quotidian.

The biggest "lie" on the internet is trying to sell "the truth" as it has become second rated by all the horsesh!t consumers line up to buy on a regular basis!

I have heard a ton of people state they joined IM, because they like to sleep a lot...

Yeah, me too... there's only one problem; for the last 6 months I have slept an average of 30-40 hours per week, and worked 90!

When, my 'education' permits, it would be nice to work hard 30 hours per week exclusively online, sleep at least 50-60 hours, and I'd still have 10 more hours free to spend time and with my wife and kids... which is my #1 goal.

Unfortunately, by both nature and statistics people almost appear to like being lied to, cause God Forbid we all start disclosing the truth which is; this business, like any business requires a serious investment of time, energy, discipline, obedience, perseverance, technical knowledge (*my nemesis), some money, testing, and more freaking hours than I can possible count...

It's no wonder the success rate is under 10%.

The hard part is steering clear of contributing to the horsesh!t marketing methods... as it almost seems tempting when seeing the number of 7-figure launches these gift-horse guru's whip up in a menial display of who can make more selling the next 'load of crap' to each others "prized" lists?

I'm off to go beat myself with a whip... as the temptation to make quick money seems to be dominating 90% of the IM community, and I feel to be playing for the minority team... which is to suffer at the expense of the other 90% that make our jobs a whole lot harder.

    All the Best,

Success is about developing content for a wide group of people you can genuinely help, who are qualified buyers. No secrets there.

That's why techniquey-focused training is insufficient. 'how to build backlinks' and 'traffic generation 101' and 'social media marketing' are all things I pay no attention to. They are small tiny insequential things compared to branding, position, and the ongoing ability to produce content that's worth paying for.

"how to develop and deliver better presentations", and "how to write great copy, and content" are much more useful. when I do webinars I've gotten as many as 2k+ people on them, and have sold a lot. But that's the end of a long process that took time, to build trust, credibility, content and actually add value to people's lives, before ever even thinking about sales.

It's a multi-year journey that starts with being prepared to 'stand and deliver' as an authority whose free content is so good, people can't help but want to buy your premium content. I learn from people like Brian Tracy, Jeffrey Gitomer, Orison Swett Marden, Earl Nightingale and others, as core role models. The IM related stuff is SECONDARY compared to your ability to produce QUALITY, Professional-grade CONTENT.

But that's hard work that takes years. That's why I succeed in a very competitive niche (trading), compared to others.. I'm a known published industry expert (speaker at conferences, published in trading magazines etc), which took years to get to. It's hard work but can be worth it. Stop screwing around with WP gadget and backlink based stuff, and instead figure out how to actually become an expert and add value to the lives of thousands of people with your expertise and content. Takes years. Welcome to reality.

(2nd choice, is the 'publisher' model, where you jv with known experts and create sites/new ways to package and deliver their content to monetize it to their lists plus new leads)

The biggest lie in IM is the statement of working 2 days a week to maintain a killer income. Like every entrepeneur, offline or online, both need to invest time, energy and devotion into their business.

The people that promote - get rich quick - schemes are the ones that are getting rich. But they destroy their reputation, which can come in handy for the long run. So basically these - get rich quick - shemes are a part of the lie I mentioned in the first paragraph.

As for saturated markets, I see it like this, if you find someone who turns out to be a scammer/someone who lies, etc and tries to sell customers his crap/services (which, they end up shelling out cash for and later regretting it), why not compete against him and offer the same service, or something else, and earn the trust of those people?.

An example would be some guy offering graphic design packages for a set price, yet he doesn't deliver on any his promises/flakes out on emails. Why not offer things he doesn't seem to care about, such as a trusting personality, awesome customer service, etc.

I can assure you that real gurus don't make those sorts of claims.

The biggest LIE would be people telling you that you can earn 20 times as much as a normal guy earns without any details of how to do it. There are few though that are true. In fact, I've really saw their credits.

I agree with some of the other posts here that say that Internet marketing is easy and fast... it sounds like some cheap hooker... the reality is that to be successful in Internet marketing, you have to work your butt off for results that you may not see for months or even years sometimes...

The biggest lie that it is easy because "all you need is a computer". I mean, it's really a full-time job and a LOT of work. Websites don't build themselves neither do they rank themselves..product creation, content creation etc...

The biggest lie is that you can get traffic for free. Nothing is free today. If you don't spend money, you will spend time, and A LOT OF time, to get traffic.
