IM'ers, I'm getting tired of no-subject e-mails.

Not only is there no subject in the Subject:, there's no subject in the whole e-mail.

Something like,

Subject: Check this out!

Body of e-mail.

This is a great deal only good until Wed.

This will add $$$ to you bottom line.

Sorry about the short notice.

Later.

Is this about Offline Marketing? SEO? Social Media? New intestinal lubricant? Who knows!

Screw that! I've unsubscribed from 2 lists in the last week. I'm not putting up with that.

Here is an good example of an e-mail I received from Sara Young.

Subject: [IMPORTANT] Awesome Free SEO Help

If I'm interested in SEO, I can check it out. If not, I can delete it and move on. Either way Sara has helped me out. And I appreciate that.

I'm just saying.

Watch who's sending them and unsubscribe. If a business owner treats customers like that, you don't want to do business with him anyway.

I don't think it's a matter of the business owner intentionally treating the customer badly. I think it is a matter of the business owner not knowing how to market properly.

    These are "proven" templates.

Because they say nothing and have no details, you can put any affiliate link you want in them and they'll do just about as well.

They are commonly used by people who don't really know or care what they're selling you, and figure you don't really know or care what you're buying either.

  • I'm not a big fan of them (and wouldn't send out emails like that myself), but they clearly work.

They can be particularly effective if you don't use them all the time, so they look a bit different. You benefit from the curiosity opens and click throughs.

The fact is that people have tested them, and the results clearly more than make up for unsubscribes. It's all part of marketing.

Frank Kern (god love him) has started getting a bit like this. He's certainly testing and getting results from it, but I find it annoying.
