How do I know if a comment on my site is real

I have a pretty new Affiliate site. I have been trying to market the site for a couple of months now and get limited traffic. I started using Facebook ads last week and really vamped them up a couple of days ago. Yesterday I started get numberous comments on my posts and pages. I was like woo hoo!! But after waking up this morning almost 50 new comments I started to read through them and they ALL have at least one typo in them which I thought was strange and they all have weird comments. Some of the comments don't have anything to do with the posts and some of them are the same exact comments but from different people. I started to go through the e-mail addresses that they put on their post and looked at the domain names. Some of them are .ir which I immediately spammed and some others look to be legitimate sites. Am I getting scammed/spammed some how? I am only approving the ones that look legitimate and I can find the website that they claim is associated with their e-mail address. Does anyone have any tips on how to stop spam comments from coming through and how can I tell if these are legitimate or not. I am a total newbie. Please Help!!! Thanks you so much!!!!

I get about a billion of those too so I'm not sure how to stop them. As long as you have the ability to approve comments, just don't approve those scammy ones. You can typically tell because they don't make sense, have nothing to do with your post, and have an odd website listed as a link. I once considered setting up redirects on all those spam links to my own links and then allowing them as comments but I honestly don't know if that would even be worth the time since I get so many.

Just part of having a blog I guess. But maybe there are some ways to help eliminate it? I'll be interested in what others have to say about that! I always took it as a good sign that my blog was ranking somewhere in search engines because they were able to find me!

Dead giveaways are fake (keyword names) that link to a website.

If your name is "get rid of debt" and your website is a debt consolodation service and you are posting on my Internet Marketing blog, you are probably spam

  cost too much for them to spam you
  
  and login lock
  
  prevent people hack into your site

If your website is WP get the Askimat pluggin and comments won't show until they are approved. I'm with Brian on this one. If the comment is good, why not let it stay? I toss anything that is too general or completely irrelevant, but if it's a good comment, someone put in at least enough thought to deserve the link up.

Unrelated comments are fake just delete them and to make it easy for you you should apply capcha to your site.

I will say that unrelated comments are what gets marked as spam in my blogs.

I don't mind if they use "keyword names" as we people are marketers - as long as it is relevant. If it is not relevant, trash em, bin em, dunk them..

  Me too, there are too many spams on my WP blog, so I kept deleting again and again. At last, I just disabled comment.
  And the same situation appears on my vbb forum, but they can post, spammers are quite annoying.

If i were to "check" all comments on my sites and approve them manually and check whether they are legit, i would need to spend the whole day (and more) just doing THIS..it's a waste of time.

Either: Disable all comments and don't accept comments at all, or enable comments but make sure that your links are all "nofollow" so you dont link to bad neighborhoods or whatever people posting. Of course, you should have the appropriate anti-spam plugins like akismet etc. if you run a wordpress site to eliminate the MOST obvious spam.

I agree that a Wordpress blog with the anti-spam plugins is the best solution. However, many times there are comments that escape the filter. You have to manually approve all comments. Approve only comments that are related to your post.

It’s good to receive many comments because Google pays attention to this fact giving a better ranking to your blog when it has many comments.

Never mind if those who leave comments post their links if their comments are at least somehow related to your post. If you don't have time to care about this matter, approve only the best comments.

I answer to the comments I receive whenever possible. This is good; my blog gets a lot of traffic from all search engines.

you kind of just have to read them and judge for yourself if it's real or fake. Usually a keyword for a name is a dead give away but not always

common antispam catches these comments at a very high success rate don't they? I rarely have to delete comments by hand.... they all are filtered out.

If they don't specifically mention my topic or something about the article I trash them. Like a few others above said, I don't mind keyword names, I use them from time to time in my own blog commenting... what matters is the content of the comment.

Some comments sound so real, when I first started I was excited that real people actually liked my content. To my chagrin I found out this was spam a few months later. Funny to think about our infantile beliefs we once had at the beginning.

Using the Askimet Wordpress plug-in should stop all of these spam comments in their tracks. I've caught thousands of comments thanks to Askimet, it's the best tool on the market for it and it's FREE.

When I first started I never read the comments made, I just approved them

Now I either do not allow comments on my blogs, or I use the plug in Captcha

Robots leave these comments so they cannot get thorugh if they have to copy the code

In addition to the other bits of advice, you might want to search for each suspicious comment in google when you have the time. Fake comments are as plentiful in google as plr articles.

Keep relavent and value-added ones and delete seemingly suspicious ones like with links or unrelated subject.

i usually check to see the urls. If there are no urls i usually approve it instantly however if there are urls i read the comment to see weather or not it relates to my post. If it seems fishy i delete it. If in someways relates to my post but still sounds a bit spammy to me i usually delete the url from the comment then approve it.

Install a plugin that prevents spammers from sending their bots to comment on your blog. I use Si-Captcha. There are plenty of plugins that help prevent spam comments.

Comment spam drives me mad. Akismet and Captcha are your best line of defence. Depending on your webhosting they may be able to blacklist IP addresses as well but that's an extreme approach and hard to manage.

  I do have some spams as well,I guess there is nothing much we can do about it other than installing some plugins that can prevent spams.
  
  What i can do is to approve those which are relevant and constructive and move all those irrelevant comments/spam to trash.

The problem with the use of CAPTCHA is that there is the possible loss of conversions, but I do agree with the installation of Askimet

This happened to me as well some months back. It started with 2 comments a day, then it became 50 and so on. You should just install Askimet and your spam comments are minimized drastically.

  There is a wp plugin on the WSO that creates a backlink via these comments. You'll have to look for it but if you are getting lots of comments you don't want then you have 2 options. Manually detete them or close the comments option. Maybe the plugin will help.

By the sound of these comments most of them seem to be spam. Askimet will stop most of them and I think it's the least you can to install it. It's free and won't take more than a minute or two to set up.

There only one way to deal with comments ... IGNORE 'em.

For new WordPress blogs, the very first customization is to turn comment off.

But still, even if comments are turned off, there are pretty smart comment-spamming-software out there that make their way through. Again, IGNORE 'em.

Unless, of course, your site become is established with many supportive members, pretty much like a well-moderated forum, then it's time to turn on comments which is a fantastic way to increase content with effort.

So in short, for comments, switch it OFF and IGNORE 'em.

You say you placed an ad on Facebook. Do you pay for each click? I placed an Adsense ad a while back and got so many robots looking at my site, I threatened to sue Google. I racked up over $50 in advertising costs in 2 hours. And not a single legit buyer.

Some comments look real but they are not. All we need a spam detecting plugin (for wordpress users) or buy akismet plugin key to activate it.
