If you were starting in IM, what advice or tips would you give yourself?

26 replies
As in, where to start, where to focus most of your time, which free good sites could bring you traffic..

I used to do IM, or rather, I used to spend time on squidoo and hubpages and used them soley to make money - bum marketing? but I relised that I couldn't leave comments on blogs as the owners didn't let me link to hubpages etc

I am wanting to step forward and start my own website but I do not want to do something stupid and call my website something bad or end up with an empty website with not a lot going on or have it 'missing out' on something due to my own ignorance with website seo.

I find it quite hard to right enthusically about CB products as a lot of them seem like a scam, even if they are not. How did/do you get over these humps?

thanks

    Just put up a website. Even if you fail, you will learn from your experience and mistakes. And don't expect to succeed at your first try. Nothing but failure teaches you how to succeed.

      This part of what Psst said.

      But not this part -

      Nothing but failure teaches you how to succeed.

      This was what I was thinking about or thinking like. A failure or rather, a personal lesson could teach me a lot and have me asking other question which would lead to answer to a ton of other questions I have. thanks

    I would go ahead and "pull the trigger" so to speak. If you hit the target somewhere in one of the outer rings, work on aiming better.

    If you miss the target completely, you are out $10 for the domain name and start over with a lesson learned.

    The alternative is called "analysis paralysis" by some and experienced by many.

      Who offers webspace for $10? The best I find is $50 for 12 months. Thanks for the other insights. I guess more is lost through indecision than wrong decision.

    1. Pick a keyword rich domain name
    2. Start a website, or blog in an niche that you have interest in ( very important ) It will be a lot easier for you to succeed. P.S. Make sure the niche is profitable.
    3. Build high page rank backlinks to your blog, or website
    4. Be consistent and never give up also very important
    5. Write quality unique content. I should not have to explain the importance of this.
    6. Drive traffic to your site.
    7. Obviously monetize your site with adsense ads, affiliate programs.
    8. My best advice I could give you is to start an email list as soon as possible. This is where the big money is made - The sooner the better.

    No magical formula but I can tell you from experience it works! Good luck, set yourself some goals and stick with them!

      Thanks for the points! I guess my main sticking point would be that there are people out there that know more than me on my choosen subjects. It is quite hard to speak of things without taking into consideration the information from somewhere else that conflict with what I believe or know.

        To be realistic about it, though, this is almost always going to be the case.

        It doesn't matter.

        What matters isn't just "how much you know on your chosen subject". How much you can deliver of what your customers want to know about it is far more important.

        And people who know "everything about everything" often don't have that skill set at all, so you have an advantage over them, really.

        That said, I actually disagree with many of Entrepreneurjay's points, myself. For example ...

        - many of them seem to be almost entirely SEO-based, which is exactly where so many beginners find that the wheel comes off. If you're dependent on Google for your traffic, then however well you do everything else, as so many Warriors found out to their cost earlier this year, you're always potentially one algorithm-change away from disaster;

        - "high page rank backlinks" are of steadily decreasing relevance, these days. Page ranks, as Google openly admits, count for less and less: what matters for off-page SEO purposes is that your backlinks needs to be of quality (and that doesn't mean just page rank!) and relevance. No surprise here, I think: we can all see this for ourselves, just from the regularity with which lower-PR pages with fewer backlinks outrank higher-PR pages with more backlinks in Google's SERP's (and from many other things, too);

        - I think "never give up" is a dreadful fallacy: when things aren't working, there comes a time when it's highly appropriate to give up, and futile to continue;

        - for many business models, "obviously monetize your site with AdSense", and so on, won't be right at all. It may be counterproductive and dramatically reduce income (I'd hate to give people additional ways to leave my sites, rather than staying there, which earn me only pennies);

        I agree about starting to build an email list as quickly as possible, as long as you know how to build relationships, nurture and manage a list.

        I'd like to add that I'm not for a moment questioning Jay's observation that all the stuff above is genuinely what worked for him: it's just that the game has changed a lot over the last couple of years and is also probably changing at a faster rate now than previously, too, and it's far from certain that specific techniques which have worked well in the past will still work for people starting now. Especially SEO-based techniques. Indeed, there are actually many specific reasons for thinking that they probably won't.

    I guess it is really the mindset.

    You must really find or create a product you really believe will help all the people you are targeting in the world.

    If you do not believe in your product, no one will. Good luck finding a product to sell!

    Just don't be afraid to fail. Just pick something interest you and start a site. There are some good clickbank products to promote, like rocket spanish, save my marriage today, jamorama ... so on.

    Take the action. Learn during action. Don't just learn, work. Learn through mistakes. And never invest any money until you earn some money.

    If I were to start again in IM, I would take my time to learn about the different ways of making money in IM. For example, learn about PPC, PPV, SEO, Facebook, Email Marketing, Copywriting, etc and figure out what appeals to you most. Every body is different and the various methods generally required different mindsets and skills and experience.

    Don't rush into it. Once you have evaluated what you would be happy doing, then go for it and remain focused on it until it works.

    I have been in internet marketing full time now since 2007 but I remember when I first started, I got distracted by the different methods and jumped from one to another. It was only when I decided to just focus on one thing that I began to make headway.

    I hope that helps.

    Go out and actually find someone that knows exactly what there talking about and ask them to teach you!

    There is nothing better than having someone there help you when you first start!

    Alot fail because they buy product after product that sells the conceot to making money online, and doesn't actually teach the nitty gritty parts.

    Also, I would of captured every single lead and buyer to use for later on!

      The only way?!

      Ooops ... so much for all of us highly successful affiliates who are gradually building expanding, asset-based businesses leading to increasing, true residual income which isn't dependent on the continued success of any individual products at all, and free from all the concerns of customer-support, product-security, product-delivery and all the rest ...

    Don't play the Google ranking game!

    There are plenty of ways to build traffic and a viable and sustainable business that don't rely on Google - or any other search engine!

    The traffic is too volatile - one algorithm change and your business is dead, or some heavy hitter with lots more money than you can decide to take an interest in your "keywords".

    People often say "don't put all your eggs in one basket" then merrily put all thier traffic eggs in the Google basket!

    If I were starting over in IM, I'd tell myself not to bother trying to make money right away.

    I know that's the polar opposite mentality of a lot of the posts here, but you quickly learn that in IM, your best resource is people. Keep your day job and look for chances to meet and assist other people, and cool opportunities will fall into your lap.

    I would tel myself to totally ignore most of the hype out there, it distracts people from the road and wastes time and money in the long run.

    Dont even think about a website or a product yet, if you start off doing things this way around you could be doomed for failure.

    Its a Niche with a hot buying tribe of prospects you want, not only that you need to be able to get to those prospects without cost to you, or minimal cost. Trust me this is the most crucial part of this business, for every hour spent now, you can save yourself tenfold over the coming weeks and months and even years. Once you have this piece of the engine in place then start thinking about websites and products etc.

    All the best,
    Steven.

    Hi,

    If you have a product or website and you are going to market it on internet.

    Seek and Learn something is the first Advice to avoid unnecessary efforts and expense over advertising.

    First: You should take a training courses of of internet marketing. One of them is Social Network Academy.

    Go there and seek something, on how to advertise while using social media. and other sites also offered PAID courses over it.

    Second: Now you are fully able to advertise on the internet.

    Best Regards,
    Zaheera

    If i where you i would take what these well known marketers tell you about driving traffic via social media and Facebook etc !!

    I find it pretty amazing to find these very same people in various OFF Facebook locations driving traffic and if you take a sneaky look they are driving traffic to their facebook link, this in turn looks like they are getting masses of Facebook LIKES and the end result for them is a great little product preaching how powerful Facebook is !!
    and to the naked eye it does seem to be very powerful !!

    Trust me, Facebook and social media can be very powerful, but what most people tent to not tell you is that you will struggle as a newbie. You really have to be creating a presence OFF Facebook and social media and then after time you will build a following on social media sites.

    I know of people who have flogged themselves to bits using social media, following all the tips and tricks only to be left on the ground about to pack it all in.

    The main problem with social media is that behind the scenes you have an army of people constantly finding ways to change and develop their platform to keep ahead of rival social media platforms, hence a load of work for you keeping up with the changes.

    Your time will be much better spent using other more targeted traffic methods.

    All the best,
    Steven.
