Is Clickbank still the way to go?

I have been our of the product marketing gig for a while, but now I've developed a Wordpress plugin I'd like to sell, and I wonder if Clickbank is still the best place to sell through if you want to recruit affiliates.

I've seen some really good products sold through ejunkie, and also some through digiresults.com and rapbank.com, but since I've been out of the game for quite a few years, they're completely new to me.

ClickBank's network of affiliates is nothing to sneeze at. However, the best affiliates I've found for my main ClickBank product were not already ClickBank affiliates when I approached them. I had to recruit them personally and walk them through signing up as affiliates. What I'm getting at is that your mileage may vary, and what you get out of any affiliate network will have a lot to do with what you put into it.

      Jon,

I realize that most Clickbank affiliates won't get any sales, but that would be true for most affiliate networks. I like the idea of approaching site owners who might not already be doing affiliate marketing. Thanks for that thought.

Is there a way to find out which Clickbank affiliates are the most successful in a particular category and approach them personally?

Not directly, no. ClickBank can't reveal any specifics about who their affiliates are, because they would quickly lose their position as the link between publishers and the affiliates in their network. Which is unfortunate, because it sure would be nice to know!

For recruiting serious affiliates (given a product and sales page with which it's possible to recruit them, obviously), certainly.

ClickBank, DigiResults and RapBank are hugely in "the average vendor"'s favor, on this front, for the simple reason that the typical serious, successful affiliate isn't willing to be dependent on the vendor for payment (that just adds a whole new dimension and potential problems to our businesses!), but wants a network with an established reputation for reliability and prompt payment. And may even not look much at anything else.

As Jon says, not directly, no - ClickBank offers affiliates anonymity.

However, you can try, indirectly: it's not too difficult, using Google a little imaginatively, with a list of the names of competing products, to identify websites on which they're reviewed, for example. It's possible to have a look at those and contact their owners. And the more you do to contact individuals directly, the better your chances are. Perhaps especially if you offer them some "special deal". Just a thought.

The truth is there is still a lot money to be made within Clickbank. It is still the most visited affiliate marketplace for digital products on the internet. Therefore, it makes sense to list your product, if you are a vendor within the marketplace, for exposure.

The rules have become more draconian; however, if you are a legitimate vendor you won't have a problem at all.

Ah, thank you! This is a very good idea.

Clickbank doesn't let you offer different commission rates for different affiliates do they? So the special deal might be something different or extra outside the clickbank system?

No, it doesn't. But there are a lot of vendors who'll offer people "an extra something" by PayPal. (These affiliates more or less give up their anonymity, of course.) And there are some vendors who do so very openly, as an incentive for any affiliates who sell 25+ products per month, or whatever. There, we're back to "being dependent on the vendor for payment", but in that case only for the "something extra", rather than for the bread and butter income. Which is less concerning, and something we recognise that vendors (who want to do that) can't altogether avoid.

ClickBank are trialling a 'tiered commission
            structure' which will allow this

That's really good to know. I had stopped using Clickbank and have now rethought that and put some of my products back on it. If nothing else it makes sense to diversify a bit in case you run into a problem with a merchant (like some of the paypal horror stories you hear).

You have to be very patient with Clickbank. Many people make the mistake of not finding the right traffic. Once your website is receiving targetted traffic, Clickbank can be VERY profitable. There are quite a few members making a living off Clickbank alone, and I hope to be doing the same very soon.
