Does Dragon Naturally Speaking work with applications I have in mind?

Hey guys,

I want to buy Dragon Naturally Speaking Home Edition for Windows PC. However I have a few questions before I decide to shell out $75 bucks (It's currently on sale). I hope some of you who own DNS Home Edition can answer my questions.

1) Does it work well with Open Office, Notepad, or Google Docs as I do not own Microsoft Office or Works. So, I'm stuck with Open Office, Notepad, and even Google Docs.

2) Also, can you tell me what other applications that you find DNS extremely useful with.

3) What limitations does Home Edition have? Does it only work with only a handful of applications? Are we to assume that it only works with the applications that they mention on the sales page since they don't mention Open Office, Notepad, nor Google Docs?


I'd love to knock out a couple of high quality articles in an hour.

    Far as I know if you can type it, DNS can do it.

    I use it for my article writing and it does frustrate me as I have to train it but I can write an article in under 10 minutes with it but then need another 10 minutes to edit it.

      I spent an afternoon training it, and now I can just speak to it and it is about 99% correct. I rarely have to correct it. Amazing program :-)

        It's brilliant for helping you to get your thoughts down, but does take a bit of training or you can get some very strange results

          I have used Dragon Naturally Speaking for about 4 years now. Each edition has improved and I have been happy with it. I use it on open office and notepad a great deal.

          You do have to train it for your pronunciations which, while time consuming, is well worth it. I consider that to be the same as the learning curve for using anything new.

          When you first open it up you do have a bit to read as you train it. There are I think 2 or 3 reading selections to choose from ranging from easy to difficult. I use the difficult one as it covers a lot of bases up front saving on time later on.

          Once you train it on the reading selection and set your microphone level just to pen the application that you want to use it in and start talking. It does save me a lot of time even with occasional corrections. I can type decently but even so it is easier for me to just say it. If you are in that category this should be a great buy. At your price I am jealous because I paid a lot more than that for it.

          You can do email with it but I don't. I probably should but I consider that to be my finger workout.

    Absolutely! Give DNS the command: "Start OpenOffice Writer."

    You can also use DNS with your browser or mail program, even do searches on google and Amazon.

    Just about anyplace you can type, you can use DNS. I couldn't be without it. Only problem I have ever had is that it starts when I boot up and no matter how many times I change the setting it won't stop. I have to go in on the task manager and shut it off (two processes).

      Nuance recommends shutting down at least once a day - I guess for people like me who run their PC 24/7.

      The Quick Reference Card says to open the DragnBar's profile menu and choose 'Exit Dragon.'

      Having DNS start automagically on boot is a plus for me because that's the only reason I have to ever boot into Windows.
