Upgrading Clients Dilema!

Just creating an "upgrade subscription" page for my service.

I offer 4 packages, clients are all on one of these 4 packs.

I am developing a page where clients can go in and upgrade their subscription, however just a dilema on how to do this from a marketing perspective.

Obviously I don't want my clients to go "hey, why don't I DOWNGRADE my subscription"...

So,

Should I create a page with all of my packages and a paypal button to alter their subscription to the package of their choice? - This would mean I would just hope more people 'upgrade' than 'downgrade'.

OR..

Should I create individual pages with NO option to downgrade to a lower package, only the HIGHER packages would be mentioned....?

Thoughts?

Here's what I would do...I'm not sure what kind of skills you have in programming and I'm assuming each package steps up so you have package 1 as the lowest and package 4 as the highest.

Here's the logic you could use:

Client A is currently at package 2. When they go to the upgrade page, the only options they would see is package 3 and 4.

Client B is currently at package 4. When they go to the upgrade page, they only see a statement saying "you're currently at the highest package"

Client C is current at package 1. They would see package 2, 3, and 4.

If a client were to downgrade, I would want some interaction with them to see if I could potentially talk them out of it.

If you need further assistance in how to actually implement this, please let me know and I'll give you some help.

      Sounds good.

The only problem is that I don't allow subscriptions to my website.

I know exactly what you mean and I may need to implement s2member plugin or similar to implement this.

But as it stands, their SEO subscription is seperate from the actual website.

      Cheers,
      Dave

I want to play devil's advocate here. I would include them all for this reason. Maybe they are looking to downgrade vs. cancelling. Trying to lower costs and such. By making it easy they might return or even go up the ladder further in a few months when finances are better.

A paying customer is better than a lost customer. And someone who had more before will likely want more again.

By showing all you are having faith in your offers. You know you give more value as they go up. So if someone steps down you know they will step back up.

Once they are gone for good they are harder to get back.

    Hmm, interesting.

That is a good approach actually.

I think what I need to do is spend time implementing a Wordpress memebers package so each user has their own login where that can either Upgrade their subscription (which only shows upgrade options), and Manage Subscriptions, where they can downgrade or cancel their subscription.

I don't want to hide the ability to cancel altogether but I guess if downgrade options and a warning about negative effects of stopping consistent link building is on the same page, then cancelations would be be lower.

Thanks guys.. giving me some things to think about!
