    I for one would much rather spend an hour a day at a computer ANYWHERE in the world (at the beach as I type this!) than spend 40plus hours a week at a JOB.

      Being an internet marketer is not a waste of time if you know what you're doing. I'm assuming that you've had success as an internet marketer and now you're going out on your own. I think it takes a lot of courage to leave a job and go out and start your own company. Starting your own company takes a lot of time and work, especially when you first start out. You should have a business plan in place and be able to stick with it. I wish the best of luck and hope that it works out for you.

    It all depends on what your doing with your time while sitting in front of the computer. I on the other hand would rather spend 10 hours of my time doing something that could possibly make me a living then chatting on facebook all day long.

    I think it is a matter of if your using the time wisely. Computers are big part of today's life and wont go anywhere anytime soon. So if your here or facebook you'll still be spending tons of time in front of the computer.

    IM is a great job that basically rewards you for going around and being nice to people! And if you need help you just ask around and people will beat down your door to do it! It's really amazing.

    Think about it! What do we want to do with our time before we die? Life may seem to some to be pointless but I love being here, I love what I am doing - whether at my computer, at the theatre, acting, singing watching football, seeing movies, my wife, family, grandchildren - it's a question of pleasure and enjoyment. If you think internet marketing is a waste of time then for you it IS a waste of time.

    Almost any office job is going to have you at a computer for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week, 2000 hours a year.

    If you're gonna be sitting in front of a computer anyways, why not do IM where you have unlimited income potential?

    Plus being able to set your own schedule (work 6am to 2pm for example) is always a plus.

    So.... yeah, I'll sit on a computer for that!

    My personal opinion is.... It is a waste of time if you are just an IMer chasing "fads" or "loopholes"... You end up on a constantly moving treadmill..... Next month's income depends on a variety of factors out of your direct control....

    In contrast, if you are building a solid IM related business... Whether it be as a subject matter "guru" selling information products, building equity in domains, building software or something else tangible, it is worthwhile....

    My two cents... :-)

      I think what the OP is asking is if you'd be happy sitting in front of your home computer as your career.

      Besides income, there are things to consider. If you love being around people, then IM might not be the vocation for you. I get most of my social fill from forums. I have a few friends that could never work alone, and are constantly surrounded by people.

      If you believe that working from the computer equates to not contributing, you're likely to experience some dissonance there as well.

      I don't think it's a bad question. The answer is entirely dependent on your preferences and personality. If IM doesn't fit your life, then there's lots of ways to make money.

      For me, IM is a dream come true. Currently, I work as a farm manager. I'm constantly concerned about the weather. On the side, I ship physical products. I can't stand going to the post office. No more worry about the weather and no more shipping physical products? I'm on board for that.

        So, you have to ask yourself do you want to sit in front of a computer making someone else richer, or do you want to put in that time for your own business.

        Even sitting at a computer is working depending of course that you distinguish between just surfing and entertainment as opposed to working to making money.

        Some of the downsides of sitting at a computer are weight gain, cramps, aches, and pains from poor posture, and in my case the brain going to sleep because I was sitting on it.

        Being an internet marketer is not a waste of time if you treat it as a business and are willing to learn the business much like you might buy a sub sandwich shop and have to learn how to order, how to make the sandwiches, the administrative tasks and so on.

        I think where people make a major mistake is buying into the "work in your underwear 1 minute a day and make a bazillion dollars overnight while sipping margaritas on a beach in Mexico" lie. Or some far fetched fairy tale like that.

        There are good business ways to do this business while providing value and quality. As in any other business, there will always be those who are only in it for the buck but eventually they lose.

        I can't speak for anyone else but for me this has been a great way to make a living.

    I myself just came from a wonderful event in Arizona that's
    because of internet marketing (mobile marketing in particular).

    But if you are referring to people just beginning and still struggling
    they might not be internet marketers yet but still on the road
    to getting there.

    For them it's not a waste of time either but necessary "tuition" to
    a life of adventure!

    As people have mentioned, spending FAR too long on here posting etc is not going to make you a lot but spending hours working on sites or whatever your thing is won't be a waste of time at all.

    Sounds like it might be a waste of time for you if this line of questioning is self-reflective.

    For me, being in IM means FREEDOM to do what I want. If not for IM I'd be spending my time working for someone else since I believe in being self-sufficient rather than being dependent on the government or mooching off relatives.

    Instead of spending my time working for someone else, I invest my time working for myself - and I'm a good boss! I give me much more time off than an employer would.

    Are you really wondering this 2,200+ posts later?

    Internet marketing, along with any other niche, can give you the stability to work for yourself or have others work for you. My ultimate goal was always not having to ever work for anyone else. I'm not sure what your goals were but if you aren't reaching them then try harder and find out what you're doing wrong. But no, marketing isn't for everyone so it may not be worth your time, but it is a full-time living for many of us.

    Personally, I don't think anything someone does to feed their family (as long as it's legal) is a waste of time. Even if you're making hamburgers at least you're providing for yourself and your family.

    If you hate what you're doing; then find something else to do. Take classes or learn a new skill until you can make the change to doing something you enjoy more or feels more worthwhile. No one's going to do it for you.

    The main thing is: Don't go through life in a daze doing the same things out of sheer habit. Take action and make changes as needed.

    Anyway, everyone has different goals, and everyone defines "waste of time" differently. I bet, that relatives and parents of many successful IM'ers, but even non-IM'ers considered the time their kids spent pursuing their passion to be a waste of time.

    For me it's a waste of time if you use it to do something productive, and be productive on the Internet is not just raising money, you can also enable you to study and then implement what they learned.

    This is a very legit question. To put in my own terms I say NO ! Only because I am a stay at home dad with two small girls and would much, much, much rather spend time and watch them grow up and play and read to them than be on a computer.

    Even it means making $500 month instead of 5,000 month. I know I could do it with some more work. All I would have to do is just turn on Barney and ignore them the rest of the day while on computer. But no doing!! Life is just too precious.

    So I agree to an extent ,but I think I am the exception because of my situation.

    Many here earn their family's full time income, and I obviously cant speak for them




    P.S. I will say if I had the chance to work 4 hours a day and make 8K a month or work 8 hrs a day and make 25K a month, I would take the former !! NO question whatsoever !!

    I love Internet Marketing. Ideally, of course, my choice would just be to grow a money tree, but they don't have the technology for that yet. I'm working on it though.

    On a more serious note...Internet Marketing allows you freedom, passive income, and flexibility in your location. What more do you want?

    But do you know what I REALLY like about internet marketing?

    It's an even proving ground.

    Everyone has the same struggles with self employment.

    If you're doing well in Internet Marketing, then you got there solely from your own efforts and strategies. Sure, some people have more capital to invest when they're starting out, and that could be construed as an advantage...But in the end every successful IMer needs to learn the same lessons, like...

    - How to make yourself work HARD (harder than any J-O-B)
    - How to practice excellent time management
    - The fundamentals of what makes people 'tic'
    - And much more depending on your specific business model

    No amount of money can replace that skill set.

    There are lots of ways to make money on the Internet, it's not just limited to SEO or List Building or affiliate marketing.

    Being an IMer gives me a voice. No McJob can or will ever be able to give me that.

    You can choose to be productive every minute of the day or not.
    At some point in life the consequences of your choices will manifest themselves.

    Internet Marketing is a waste of time if you go into it with the wrong mindset. If you are only looking to make a quick buck on the latest popular get rich quick course, then you are wasting everyone's time. On the other hand, if you are willing to add value to whatever niche market you are in and build a quality list of subscribers that trust your recommendations, then that is time well spent!

    It's a waste of time if you don't go all out.

    Here's how I see it: give it 110% when building your online empire and you will succeed.

    If you dabble in the waters, or give anything less than your full effort then your wasting your time as you will not see any results.

    Some people spend years in front of the computer and still don't act, this is what I would consider a waste of time.

    Being an internet marketer doesn't mean you have to spend all your time on your computer. There are systems that allow you to automate, delegate and outsource, so you can have more free time while making a good living. That's the whole idea isn't it?

    Absolutely not! Getting into Internet Marketign was the single best thing I have ever done for myself and my family.

    I can understand why a newbie might ask this. It's so easy to get discouraged and experience an "information overload".

    Here's what I'd recommend. Go into the WSO section and look for a WSO that is a good solid moneymaking stratgey (you can tell form the reviews). Then, concentrate only on implementing that system until you start making money. Then you may move onto another strategy, etc.

    Believe me, the hard work WILL pay off. I am now at the $150-$200 per day income level and every month I'm seeing a consistent 5%-10% increase.

    It took me almost 3 years of list building to achieve this, however. IM is not easy by any means, but if you are willing to put the itme and effort in, then NO, it is deifinitely NOT a waste of time!

    Hi interesting point that you made.
    Well it can be a waste of time if you dont enjoy it and dont love helping and interacting with like minded people. It can also be a waste of time if you feel that your not getting results and you have done everything possible. But honestly i would say it isn't it can be one of the most rewarding things ever if it is done properly. Once you get into IM so many doors open up and the journey never stops ending.

      I think this consists of two extremely valuable questions which should be answered, not only for the newbies, but for the seasoned veterans as well.

      Please, read this entire response before you comment to understand what I mean.

      Question 1: "Is being an Internet marketer a waste of time?"

      If your goal is to be an Internet marketer, absolutely it is a waste of your time, since there is no such thing as an Internet marketer. That term was obviously developed and has become viral due to the misunderstanding of what most online business people are.

      Your a direct sales professional... plain and simple. The types of marketing we use are just systems within the greater title.

      As a direct sales professional, we leverage Internet marketing... but Internet marketing breaks down further. I'll explain and later I'll answer question #2 from this post.

      Internet marketing consists of quite a few bits:

      - Social media marketing
      - Forum marketing
      - Direct response marketing through paid advertising
      - Email marketing (another type of direct response)
      - Viral Social Publishing: videos, document sharing, Squidoo, Hub pages and more

      This list can continue on for quite some time. David Ogelvy said, "We Sell or Esle" and commended direct response professionals as some of the brightest and hardest of the advertising industry.

      This video is empowering to say the least.

      So, to answer your first question... you are NOT an Internet marketer, you are a direct response marketer and sales professional... you're smarter than just having the title of "Internet marketer" which only represents on of the many roles we take on.

      Question #2: You only have so much time in a life to do what you'd like to do. Is sitting at a computer sufficient for you?

      It's a powerful question, but can be answered briefly and powerfully as well.

      Sitting in front of the computer is NOT sufficient... but, it's what you do and what you focus on while you're taking action on that computer, in your business, that help you to leverage your time in life properly to do what you'd like to do.

      The issue most people face, or conflict, while they are working on their business online, they are focused on their problems which diverts their focus from the ultimate solution and the could generate the exact life you want, as it has for MANY of us.

      Here are the key principles to focus on while you are on the computer, doing this will decide your success effectively, rapidly and sustainably.

      1. Understand that in order to bring more value into your own life, you must be focused on making yourself more valuable to others.

      2. Once you have made yourself more valuable (perhaps by strengthening a skill set someone is in the market for) find the quickest, highest quality and most competitively priced way to deliver it to the market place.

      3. Spend more time thinking about how you can make a difference in the lives of your family and customers and less time on how much money you want to make... and you'll be rich.

      IF you don't believe me... put it to the test.

      Spend a day in this forum reading the stresses, pains and frustrations people here have been posting for years.

      Look for a "common thread" in the conversations. Instead of thinking about how much money you could make selling them stuff, seek out the answers to their questions and provide them with the most detailed answer you can.

      Always assume, when answering questions, they do not know the steps from beginning to end.

      Then, do it again.

      What you are doing is putting yourself in the shoes of those who need you the most. You are becoming emotionally connected to the heart of your industry.

      It may take merely 2 or 3 times of doing this before a HUGE light bulb goes off and you realize how you could increase the level of value that would compel people to want what you have.

      Finally... never create a product or service, or promote a product or service, unless the market wants it. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what value you want to create for others, it only matters what value they want to invest in.

      So... the long and short of it... Time is short, take it from a guy who spent his time from 19- 27 years battling a very vicious form of nearly terminal cancer... every step, every moment, every action counts and none before them count at all.

      Spend that time wisely and if taking action on a computer is going to grow your life experience, value and contribution to your family and others... do it.

      If you find your time is being wasted, create a different path.

      Opportunities are not presented to us... we create them. So... don't loathe in front of your computer wondering if you are wasting your time, because whether or not you think you are or you think you are not...

      ... You'd be right on both counts!
