What's the advantage of getting Facebook "likes"?

So, what's the advantage of getting alot of "likes" versus someone just seeing your FB page, but not selecting "like"?

What's the difference between a "friend" and a "like"?

Who can comment on someone's wall, only a "friend"?

If someone asks their friend-A to "like" someone's page, how are they are telling friend-A about that page?

If the friend-A goes ahead and "likes" the recommended page, does friend-A's own group of friends learn about this recommended page somehow? If so, how?

Advantage -> Their "friends" see it and potential find your page as a recommendation. I don't put great value on this but I'm not big on FB so let's see what others think.

Friend = Personal to you, Like = Vote of appreciation any FB member can make on any page.

Wall comments can be controlled by settings on the page

Email, Messaging, News Feed, Human interaction

Possibly - it's in Facebook's algorithm and hard to predict.

Other than what Chris mentioned, an active Facebook presence (not just "likes") sends out positive "social signals" about your site to Google's ranking algo and we can all use more free search engine traffic. Not sure if the cost and benefit will equal out, it depends on how you go at it.

If you plan on just buying a bunch of likes, don't. Unless you've found some new type of service that can mimic natural human patterns beyond what Google can detect then they will know the likes are manufactured and it really won't help much (might even hurt).

If you "like" a page on FB, the page's updates will show up in the feed with your friends' status updates. The advantage is that you are exposed to the business'/product's updates until you unlike the page or hide the updates.

You need engaged people on your page. Rather they like it or not. The engagement is what drives their friends there.

Sometime who likes the page but never interacts with it will never see anything you post in their feed.

Using likes is related to your fan page while friends are associated with your personal fb page. the advantage of using likes is expanding your sphere of influence. The key is to keep your image and message consistent.

Getting likes means that the person who "likes" you can potentially expose you to their friends too. People's natural curiosity can lead to them wondering what their friend is liking and look at your thread out of curiosity.

It's not as powerful as them sharing your content, however it can add weight to your "Edgerank". This is a formula calculated by Facebook to decide how social you are, and determines whether your content is placed in the newsfeed or not. Despite common belief, not all content you place on Facebook is shown in your friend's newsfeed.

If you want to get your content seen on Facebook, interact with other people, like, comment and share their content. This way people will do the same for you.

It gains you trust of customers, people don't follow someone who is not being followed.

If I have 100,000 fan, wouldn't you trust me

      No. Not at all.

Especially not with all the FB likes gigs out there and they are everywhere.

Seriously, just because someone has so many likes doesn't gain trust, not from me especially.

These FB like threads always intrigue me as the main word "make money" never seems to be present.

From my experience, Facebook pushed between 25-50% of the traffic to my main site.

The reason this is possible is the "edge rank" of my page. You can find out more about edge rank here:

EdgeRank Checker | Check your Facebook Page's EdgeRank

If you're looking for traffic, Facebook "Likes" "Fans" or "Friends" are the key. The best part about FB business pages is the "Broadcasting" ability.

When you have many "likers" who engage with your page you are more likely to show up in their newsfeed - when you show up in their news feed they can interact with your content - when they interact it hits their newsfeed and their friends see it.

That's the viral nature of interactions and the newsfeed.

If you don't need traffic, I wouldn't waste too much time in Facebook.

I think, Facebook likes means that your facebook friends/fans are actually reading your posts. If its a business page, much better since facebook likes is one of the things that can more drive traffic to your site.

Unless they like it, they won't be able to get your updates regularly on their home page. And as others have mentioned, their friends will be able to see it as well.

I'm sure you know the importance of Facebook marketing since you've asked this.. but yeah, a large number of likes can spark some of your content to go viral, and that is always beneficial .

like is important because once they like your post , it will post on their profile and advertise you as well.
If they like your profile or add as friend to your profile, they will get your update all the time whenever you post something new and will appear in their news feed.

the friend can click on invite or suggestion their own group friend to your like fan page , which the following people who like your page and do it as well.

By clicking on "Like" friends of friends get a suggestion and a share saying "<name> likes this". it's a free promotion not to mention that you can handle your shares with specific lists so for example if you make a contest you can make it viewable only to the people that are friends/like your page so you give them a reason to like the page.. and then it spreads

What I understand is the "like" on facebook same with "follow" on twitter. "like" to shared the site's update in one direction only. Such a subscription. so I think "like" better than "friends". because I don't like to see too much status and comment on my wall. I just want my usefull update be shared to them...

this is the most useful post here, really a fb "like" is like getting an optin in an email list. anything you put on your page will be seen in their news feed. Think about it like building a list.
