Here's my question...

Hey all, I'm new here. I've been lurking for a while on various forums and learning quite a bit about this whole internet thing ... But a question keeps popping into my head with regards to being a successful online marketer. By successful I mean someone who makes enough money that they can quit their day job and live a comfortable life off the money they earn online.

My question is this. Do people ACTUALLY make money selling products that don't have anything to do with internet marketing? This is a serious question, because it seems that everyone I come across who appears to be successful in this industry is either selling products, writing books, or running websites that have to do with internet marketing. Is there a way to make money using internet marketing that does not consist of selling things to other people who are trying to learn internet marketing?? I have a fear that this is just the way it is, which means it's kind of a pyramid scheme. But maybe I'm wrong.

Are any of you making a living off internet marketing and NOT selling any products or services that have to do with internet marketing???

Some reassuring words at this point would be VERY much appreciated.

PS: I have a friend who runs a HUGE art blog (unique visitors per month in the millions) and makes a very good living off his site simply from advertising, so I know it's possible, but he never learnt any internet marketing, and has never been in the internet marketing "scene".

So I guess if I was to rephrase my question slightly it would be, is anyone in the "Internet Marketing Scene" making a living doing something other than selling products and services to other people in the "Internet Marketing Scene??"

Thanks guys, oh, and nice to meet y'all.

Sincerely,
leftboot.

Firstly, hello Leftboot, nice to meet you.

I make a good living and haven't had a "job" for a number of years. I am in many niches and the one niche I'm not in, is the make money online niche. Why? Well, when I started I hadn't made any money online and didn't want to join the masses of wannabe nonces that didn't have a clue how to generate online cash but flogged MMO products all the same.

It's also massively competitive, which is not bad thing but it may well be if you've no idea what you're doing and there are some very, very smart and shrewd operators in the MMO niche. Outside this niche however are still a huge amount of very hungry crowds with some surprisingly easy competition.

So your notions of MMO being the only niche to make money in and that it's some sort of pyramid scheme is, I'm afraid, a figment of your imagination you made up. Sorry but that's a fact.

PS: I have a friend who runs a HUGE art blog (unique visitors per month in the millions) and makes a very good living off his site simply from advertising, so I know it's possible, but he never learnt any internet marketing, and has never been in the internet marketing "scene".
I believe the above quote proves my point.

So I guess if I was to rephrase my question slightly it would be, is anyone in the "Internet Marketing Scene" making a living doing something other than selling products and services to other people in the "Internet Marketing Scene??"
Yes. Me and many other extremely successful people, a lot of which are alive and well on this forum.

Seriously, you will be doing yourself a disservice if you think that way.

      Hey Richard Van,

Thank you very much for your reply. I really appreciate it and you have made me feel a lot better!

No doubt that a bit of paranoia has crept into and made itself at home in my consciousness due to the fact that when attempting to learn about all this stuff day after day (and proud to say I actually have a couple of nice websites up and running at this point) I started to wonder if I was kidding myself in expending so much effort. I mean, common sense tells me that anyone trying to sell me the secrets to IM are full of crap (I know that if I had the secrets I wouldn't be selling my system to other people) and I began, after being inundated day after day, to wonder if these were the only people really making any money online (In the Internet Marketing Scene). It's great to hear that this is not the case.

Thank you again Richard (and you too webapex). All the best to you and yours.

      lb.

        Dam, you got me.

Now let me show you how to make that money, buy my new shiney thing, it's only $2000 and if you don't get it'll be the end of your dreams. Only available for the next 20 seconds (and every second after that until you buy)

...I also have only one copy left. :p

No surprise that the first thing internet marketers would teach is internet marketing.

Health, Beauty & financial issues seem to be the biggest markets, you just won't sell a $4000 seminar ticket for hair styling. You don't see many CPA offers for IM.

    Hello leftboot,
I can honestly tell you that most people in most IM forums will only talk about selling IM products. That's the reason why you will also notice that most IM forums followers will also buy in this.

However, there are many other niches and products outside this that you can sell online. A little research will show you this. However, do not do it in the IM forums.

I also started outside IM but somehow drifted to it. I however still maintain my "outside IM" roots. I make more money there than in IM. Sorry I do not want to let the cat of the bag and so cannot post my niche here.

I make 90% of my income from products that have nothing to do with IM. These range from digital download products to physical products that can be shipped to you. I even promote a few services that make me money.

I think you'd be very surprised at the number of people here that sell products and services unrelated to Make Money Online. I've seen people who have businesses here selling touch up paint for cars, music, all sorts of physical products, etc.

As with Benjamin Ehinger, about 90% of my income is derived from niches which have nothing at all to do with IM.

During this past year, I have begun promoting (in a very low key manner), a few IM products which I use extensively myself and consequently, I believe will be of use to fellow marketers, but my primary living comes from half a dozen niches which are related to my own non-IM interests and hobbies..

      I hope this helps.

I can tell you a few reasons-

    1) It's a big market
    2) It's something people are passionate about
    3) You're hanging out with internet marketers

So all of that said, there are TONS of other niches where people are making bank- but they may never you their niche to reduce competition.

But consider niches like weight loss, massive multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft, weddings, babies/children....

These are all massive niches with $$$ to be made.

Amazon and Ebay make no money. Nor do any of the retail stores that have an online store.

In this forum, you'll see a disproportionately high number of people whose primary business is either "IM advice" or "Make Money Online" (these two huge markets do overlap a bit). But this is to be expected: it's an internet marketing forum, and this is where their customers congregate.

There are also many of us here who have very successful businesses with none (or almost none) of the income arising from anything to do with that at all.

I do actually promote one internet marketing related product, myself, but not very seriously (I don't even have a "niche site" for it, don't build a list, or anything like that, don't really regard it as one of my niches, and so on) and 98%+ of my income comes from other niches.

Leftboot -- "make money online" is a niche, and it's the one that newbie IMers focus on, because that's their focus -- that's what they're trying to do.

It's a forest and trees thing. You're learning Internet marketing, so that's the one big tree in front of you. Never fear -- the forest is HUGE. :-)

Your question: "Do people ACTUALLY make money selling products that don't have anything to do with internet marketing?"

You'll find that most Warriors are in niches which have nothing to do with making money, or Internet marketing.

I've no idea which products are making the most money currently.

However, back in 2008 the Fat Loss for Idiots people were bragging that they made 21 million dollars in ONE YEAR with their product:

Fat Loss 4 Idiots $21 Million In Sales

Your question: "Are any of you making a living off internet marketing and NOT selling any products or services that have to do with internet marketing???"

Yes, I'm in lots of niches, none of which have anything to do with Internet marketing.

Internet marketing is just a strategy, that's all.

It's easy to tell you that people are making money, but you won't believe it until you start making money.

So make making ONE DOLLAR online your focus.

Then make making TEN DOLLARS online your focus.

    Then $100, then $1000.

Yes, people are making money. $1000 a day is not only possible, it's inevitable if you focus on that.

Everything starts with making just one dollar online; that will show you more clearly than words can say that it is possible...

So, go ahead. Make $1 today. ONWARD! :-)

Well said Angela... The "forrest" can also provide you with different opportunities and that is another reason why many enter this space. Here's what I mean.

Internet Marketing is HUGE and growing. If you're going to be successful in most any online endeavor as a matter of course you will need to become somewhat proficient as an Internet Marketer.

So one piece of advice is to start off your online career in services while building your passive income in parallel. And what better place to provide services to than Internet Marketers? Your service could be any number of things from website design, to setup, etc... etc... the list is virtually endless.

So for many, IM can provide a good spring board because they can get in and master one specific service - such as setting up fan pages - and then offer that service in order to begin to make some online income while they continue to work on (in parallel) building their passive income strategy sites, etc...

You can do that very ethically without reselling "info" you know nothing about. It's not difficult to focus all of your attention on learning one particular "service" that can make you a few thousand a month to "get you started".

There is a huge market for other niches other then the work at home and how to market online niches.

I think that there are over 100,000 products in so many different niches that it can be very profitable for anyone who wants their share of the pie.

I saw some very good advice in this thread, and do not feel I can add to it.

However I always dreamed that IM should be a community and not a rat race to see who makes the most money with the most secrets.

On WF that dream became a reality.

Thanks to everyone that unselfishly helps us newbies.

The first niche I was in was Internet recruiting. I was the pioneer of teaching Internet recruiting techniques online and had a mentor who had a direct line into the entire industry.

Those days, I was selling physical binders for $149. Had nothing to do with Internet marketing, but did teach a lot about search engines, how to build a recruiter site, how to find qualified resumes online, etc.etc.etc.

Now, swap out 'recruiting' and swap in, say, 'coaching'

    or

    'dog training'

    or

    'lawncare'

You can use the base level training and simply change the end goals (ie, how to make a killer website for lawncare. How to network with lawncare vendors. How to find lawncare clients. etc.etc.etc.)

It's been my experience that *unless* you're a big name in an industry and networked with all the players, you'll have difficulty making money in any niche (that is, if you're in it as the authority figure).

If you're in it as portal builders, that's another thing entirely.

    Hope that helps!

Surprisingly, a lot of people don't brag about "how much money they make" coz -

    1. It's private
    2. They don't want to reveal how they do it!

Conversely, MMO "people" (in the loosest sense of the word) have to talk about how much they make *cough* to keep peddling their stuff.

I have a friend who runs obscure classified websites and makes a crap load doing very little. He has no interest in teaching IM or giving away his business model.

Internet Marketing, emarketing, online marketing, whatever terms people want to use they all really mean sales & marketing on the internet (and increasingly phones and other devices as well). That being said, people know that everyone who wants to sell any product or service is going to have to know how and where to do it. That's why many many people sell these products because everyone is a potential buyer. But if you look at their targeted "customers", those are people who are selling EVERYTHING ELSE, and many doing it very successfully.

I have a few websites that make a nice income and have nothing to do with internet marketing itself, but all are a direct result of my emarketing, internet marketing efforts.

    Hope this helps.
