Need help with Joomla site - Can this be done?

Hi Fellow Warriors,

I am setting up a membership using Joomla; I am using Account Expiration Control Component and FireBoard.

It is a membership that has articles; I would LOVE have a page set up where people would see the first paragraph of each of the articles. Then they would see the word "more". Then when they click on "more", if they are not members, they would be taken to a page that reminds them to subscribe and has a subscription link. Is it possible to set something like this up using Joomla? Does anybody know how to do this?

Thank you,
Kim

No idea. I just found it via google. Look around for reviews first or try shooting an email to be safe.

Thank you, What search terms did you use to look for this though? I was not sure how to put it into a search term or two in order to do a search for it on Google. I am not sure if this is an extention from Joomla or custom programming?

          thanks,

joomla membership tease - Google Search

Second hit. It seems like a custom solution that they install for you. Probably a module of some kind.

I should mention that I am currently testing out Caribou and it has this functionality by default. It also integrates with PhpBB and vBulletin. It's free for the first 100 registered users (I'm not affiliated in any way)

Yo - the person is me :-) Just in case anyone was wondering...

The teaser text can be implemented either through the JACL component or through a mambot (which is what I use). The mambot is called "Access to text" -- I'll try and dig up the site for you.

My membership site solution has it all integrated though,in case you're feeling lazy. ;-)

                Hope that helps

Not only can it be done, it is an integral part of joomla.

The super administrator can assign a level of permission to most anything
                on a page.

The articles can be set up with a "read more" link, that leads to a
page that can have that subscription module based on the "menus"
assignment. (Menus can be set to show on just certain pages or on
                all.)

The subscription module can be set to "public" so all can see it
or it can be set to other permissions so that only signed-in
members can see it. Most everything can be set with permissions.

                Hope that helps.

This would be Lloyd Lopes I believe.

On the old forum I was discussing this very WSO with him briefly.

[Edit: I replied to this before finishing the thread. So I guess I should've known LLoyd would notice a Joomla Question and jump in here.]

          Hey Steve

How do you manage to control access to individual objects on a page? Is there something I completely missed in all my time using this thing?

Are you talking about the usual groups permission setting for the article?

Even if you use the standard Joomla! intro behaviour, you can't really (easily) control the redirection URL to the "membership required" page

          Thanks

            Hi Lloyd,
I was just looking at the properties and access levels again on my
            local server. There are three,

            • Public
            • Registered
            • Special

            Public
is of course everyone, registered are those the super
administrator would install, and special I have not even looked
at, but it would also be controlled at the backend admin interface.

You can install modules, such as a login module with certain access
privileges, and only to appear on certain pages via extensions > module manager > module name. A login can be a "module" if you create
a new module this way. This module can have the different access levels mentioned above and not everyone would see it on the chosen page that an article would end up being placed on. On the Module Manager page
in the backend of Joomla, the access levels are clearly listed.

This should be putting some ideas into people's minds: RSS feeds
can be set to registered or special. You can make a joomla site
for people to see only restricted RSS feeds if they are in the
registered group. But that is just one option, there are others.

Now, all the above is for version 1.5. I can not speak for the older
            version.

Yes. Many other things can be set to access levels, just like
            the articles.

Yes, you are correct, this is for 1.0, so I guess I will need a mambot then. Can I use this one? JContentSubscription – Pay and Read Content Component

I have already set this site up with another membership module will this new one if installed override the existing or will it cause any problems?

Thanks for everyones help, I knew I had to be missing something here.

Just noticed that this extension would require a seperate license for each site you install it on. I have 10 sites right now that I want it installed on.

Do you have any suggestions for another solution, again I am using version 1.0

I just need a preview page with a link at the end of each paragraph that sends people to the subscription page.

I'd like the previews for the articles done automatically as we add them. I'd also like the ability to control the number of previews we show and the ability to determine which articles are previewed so we can rotate them.

Maybe I should have someone write me a custom script to do this? I appreciate your thoughts.

                Thanks,

Steve is correct, this is the built in behavior of Joomla....

Now, here is the tricky part.. money (isn't it always )

I assume you want people to PAY for becoming a member. You probably also want them to stop having access when their subscription expires.

This is the part you need a third party extension for. There are a few current options:
JoomSuite Member - Pay To Access -
    https://globalnerd.org/
    SubscriptionDELUXE | ElearningForce

    And one coming soon:
Joomlapolis - The home of Community Builder - Paid subscriptions CB plugin status

yes, that is correct, I actually already have this one installed https://globalnerd.org/ but I am not sure how I can use this to control the article content with the more link to the membership. Is there another extension that I need to install as well?

You've hit the wall. Joomla is extremely limited in this aspect. It was never created to support a pay-membership environment. And I think the responses in this thread have been the most helpful I've seen on this website so far.

I love Joomla and actively use it, but had to give it up for my membership site. I'm currently testing the hell out of Caribou to see if it will do the trick. So far it has. I know...it's $199 after the 100th registered user. But by then, I'll know whether the site is profitable or not. And hopefully I'll be able to pay for the subscription 5 times over before then.

One of the above must be the answer to your problems. Unfortunately, you'll have to dish out some money. And that's the cost of doing business with Joomla developers. Maybe you can work out a multiple-site discount?

If you're looking for a free (or low cost) way to do this...there isn't. I've looked...and I was disappointed. Maybe you should briefly check out Drupal? They might have other options as well.

          There is hope...

I am in a closed beta for a Joomla solution which provides very powerful paid subscription.

Once that is out of beta, it will be closely followed by a turnkey hosted version of it....

Joomla 1.0 is rock solid , has been through years of testing and bug fixing and is realible.

Joomla 1.5 , well , is a bit of a mess right now. You install it , you have the bugs of the normal program , as well as the bugs of the components built for the program , as well as the bugs integrating all of these components , as well as the bigs of the normal program when the upgrade it , as well as the bugs of the components when the upgrade the normal program , as well as the bugs that are created when you mesh upgraded components.

I need solutions that work for me today - not in 5 months time when Joomla 1.5 is stable. 1.0 provides all the functionality I need , and I'm not moving anywhere for a while.

That , however , is a business decision , and many developers like simpleweb will happily install 1.5 and spend the time fixing the issues themselves , and repeating the process when upgrades happen. They , however , will fix problems fairly quickly and can actually fix the problems.

For normal users , it is the kiss of death and they usually move to another more stable CMS.

@Tiger - I meant controlling the individual bits of information and pictures on any given page. Not the page itself. And not modules in pages - the actual text.....

My suggestion is to use Joomla 1.015 , JACL , AEC and the Access to text Mambot. It would do exactly what you require.

AEC installs and works on 1.5 - but does not play nicely with other components - as well as being unstable , insecure and generally buggy..

              Hope that helps
              Cheers!

That is what I meant also, access levels are given to objects, such
as logins, modules on a page, etc. Certain things just wont show up on
a page if a person does not have access. The administrator has
control over the text with the HTML module and its access levels, plus
all articles are assigned access levels.

Version 1.5 was called stable months ago by the joomla development
                team.

                Thanks !

Ah OK - thats pretty cool :-)

The 1.5 system is sort of stable - just because the joomla team said it is doesn't mean it won't give you problems and generally cause carnage. If anyone wanted just the Joomla core and some design sure - go 1.5. Problem is , they come back with the " Can I add this or that component" question , and as soon as that happens then you have the nightmare of trying to integrate all the stuff.

Joomla , as I see it , cannot be put out there on its own. The extensibility is one of the main points of using the software in the first place.

Case in point - yesterday I needed a site to work with AEC and the metaweb plugin to use Live writer with. Those were the only two requirements. The two conflicted ( Trust my luck ) because AEC runs in legacy.

I used 1.015 and my problems vanished and the customer was happy.

I'd say 1.5 is pretty stable, I have about 847 users with Joomla 1.5 sites with no real issues.

There might be some truth in stability of extensions, but why build a site that is going to be legacy and no longer supported in 6 months. THAT doesn't seem like a wise business decision. Bear in mind... migrating from 1.0 to 1.5 IS VERY difficult.

                  Hi Kim,

Came across Joomihide plugin in Joomla Extentions which seems to do what you want
JoomiHide is a Joomla Plugin that will restrict any part of an article or content to registered users only. All you have to do is just insert the "reg" or "unreg" string into your joomla text/content then the text within the "reg" tags will be showed to only the registered users and the text within the "unreg" tags will be showed to only guests
                  It's Joomla 1.5 Native and not free - $2.99

JoomiHide Joomla Plugin - Hide Portions Of Your Joomla Content

As apposed to what? Having a system that doesn't work properly and one that irritates people as opposed to a system which does work and does the job? Imagine if an amateur decided to put up 1.5 and ran across your 404 bug. What would he do? He would probably just ditch it.

The 847 people who do use it - how do they use it? What extensions to they install , and what support do you provide? I'm guessing they don't get your individual attention...just from the numbers.

I hear you on the upgrading issue. Its not a piece of cake. But why not come across that bridge when it arrives , rather than worry about support which will still be strong for the foreseeable future? ( I give it maybe 2-3 years ).

And in any event , support is usually given from unknown sources and is a "best effort" service given out as a freebie....its almost as good as not supported at all for a semi-mission-critical business.

After all , this is software....so people will have to upgrade at some point...no matter how difficult it is.But right now upgrading or starting with the new software will cause them more harm than good...

This is an opened ended thing - there are pros and cons and I'm not debunking your approach....but I kind of need something to work when I build it....
