Ranking well in google.co.uk but horrible for the same keywords in google.com

My site ends in .com but i am based in england. I thought that having my site set to united states in the target audience prefference in google webmaster tools would solve my problem. But the dilema still remains that for the same keywords i rank very well in google.co.uk and bad in google.com, very bad... why is this?

    Competition...

It's likely that in a smaller region you have done a good job of SEO and building sufficient backlinks. However, on a much larger playing field you probably have some way to go to compete with those pesky Yanks and their fiendishly good marketing ways.

I agree it'll be the much greater competition mainly.

It's often pretty easy to get ranked in UK searches especially if your website is physically hosted in UK as you'll get an advantage from that even if you target a different audience in webmaster tools (in my experience anyway)
