My hostgator autoresponder is landing in spam folder

I have a way for people to email me via my website address and I have an automated follow-up through hostgator.

Well recently I noticed my email response has gone way down. So I tested it and almost all the emails I send are going to my spam folder.

I have no idea why this is happening.

I know people are not reporting this as spam. Im not engaging in anything unethical.

Its just a simple one-time autoresponse, thats it.

Any ideas?

I used to have this problem as well.

I think email companies are not very keen on the free autoresponders
    from hosting companies.

Since I changed to a paid one, I have no problems.

Sounds good but Ive never seen a paid one offer this.

      IE

      You email bob@bobsdomain.com

and you get... autoresponder (or vacation reply)

The ONLY paid ones I know of you have to SUBSCRIBE via a form.

Do you know something I dont?

      Thanks

It's not surprising that your emails are going to spam. You could use Google Apps with your domain (or regular gmail) and have automatic vacation replies with almost perfect delivery results.

"Email companies" (i.e., aweber, icontact, etc.) have nothing to do with whether a 'vacation responder' (one-time auto response) lands in a spam folder or not.

How do you know people are not reporting your messages as spam? There are people out there who don't know the difference between the 'spam' button and the 'delete' button. Has nothing to do with your ethics.

You could try adding a reminder such as 'this email was sent in response to a request on [page url].'

Reassuring them that they are not on an ongoing list might also cut down on problems.

Another thing to check is whether your domain somehow ended up on a spam blocker list. I'm on my wife's laptop, so I don't have a list handy, but a quick search should give you a few.

Several years ago, I had the same problem you describe, only it happened from the start. A little research found the IP listed on a blacklist site. An enquiry with the host (not Hostgator) revealed that the IP had formerly been assigned to an adult site.

After I got the IP removed from the blacklist, no further problems.

Oh, and you might want to ask the support people at Hostgator to check it out and see if there is a setting wrong or something. I was reading about one guy who had problems because he had the wrong character set specified.

    Good luck...

  • I did a search. The IP is not blacklisted so why its going to the spam folder I have no clue.

I know its not the title of the email because I havnt changed it and everything was fine with for a long time.

Content, internal filters, just the fact its an auto-reply... to name a few reasons.

Personally, I hate when people use them. They just clog the lines even more.

If you post the domain or send me a link to it I can do some checking for you. If the IP isn't blacklisted then it is either your domain that is or you are using the wrong keywords. If the IP is blacklisted anywhere and it is on HostGator's shared hosting, just shoot an email to rblabuse@hostgator.com and let them know.
